Pleo Reborn Owners FAQ

Please note that this FAQ is specifically aimed at Pleo RB owners, for Pleo classic owners please refer to my earlier general Pleo FAQ which can be found here:
http://bobthepleo.com/forums/index.php?topic=1617.0

Official Pleoworld Pleo RB videos can be found here:
http://www.pleoworld.com.hk/pleo_rb/eng/pleointro.php

The following videos and information are aimed at helping you keep your Pleo RB happy and healthy and help you get the most out of your Pleo RB’s new features.

Important battery tip!
Sent in by Kat: If your battery and chargers are acting up try giving all the terminals (silver spots) a good wipe with a slightly damp cloth to clean off any gunk.

Pleo Reborn Introduction

Showing you what's in the box and talking a little about Pleo Reborn's features.
PLEASE WATCH THIS IF YOU ARE NEW TO PLEO REBORN

Inserting the clock battery:

Before you go turning your Pleo on for the first time there is one important thing you need to do. Set the clock battery! This clock lets Pleo know what time of day it is, so he/she knows when to sleep and when to play. The clock battery compartment is found in the rear right hind foot.

Step 1: Flip your Pleo upside down and carefully remove the little ‘lid’ by loosening the small screw.

Step 2: Make sure your Pleo’s battery compartment looks like the picture below with two little tiny metal tabs and one big metal tab.

Step 3: Insert your battery that came with Pleo flat side up into the compartment, the two little tiny tabs need to sit on TOP of the battery, and the long one needs to sit underneath:

Step 4: Carefully replace the little ‘lid’ and tighten up the screw. You are now ready to turn your Pleo on for the first time!

Setting the time:

When you first insert the clock battery that will set your Pleo to have an internal time of 12 noon, however you can reset this any time by using a paperclip to depress the little button that is in the little pinhole next to the clock compartment on your Pleo’s foot. Although you can do this while Pleo is switched off I prefer to set the clock while Pleo is on so that I get the little confirmation beep.

My Pleo’s are set to ‘real’ time that is I set their internal clocks at 12 noon so that their internal clocks, and my clocks are in sync. However you do not need to do this. Set your Pleo’s clock’s when you want them to be most active. If you play with your Pleo’s mostly at 6pm at night, then set their clocks for that time so that they are ready to play when you are. Remember you can change this any time just by inserting a paperclip into their foot and pressing the little hidden button.

PRO TIP: Pleo is active up until about half and hour before bedtime (About 9:30 pm if the clock is set to 'real' time) at which point he'll start to slow down and get a bit sleepy. So set your Pleo to go to sleep about the same time you do, this means you can enjoy watching your Pleo get tired as you do. Don't forget to remove the battery if you don't want a wake up call though ;)

What does the clock do?

The clock tell your Pleo when to be active, and when to fall asleep or wake up. Since my Pleo’s are set for real time this means that they fall asleep at approximately 10pm and wake up at 8am. They are most active between 9am and 9pm.

If you set your Pleo’s noon time to be different from real time you can work out what time your Pleo will sleep and wake up with some simple maths. Their sleep time will come 8 hours after the time you set as noon and their wake up time will be 8 hours before the time you set as noon. If you set the noon time at 6pm you time, your Pleo’s will get sleepy at 2am and will wake up at 10am.

You can see the sleep and wake functions being demonstrated in the following video.

Naming your Pleo RB

Unlike the Pleo Classics, Pleo Reborn can learn his or her name and respond to it! However there are some limitations, turn your Pleo on and hold him or her against your ear for a moment, do you hear all that noise? Your Pleo has to hear your voice over that noise, and he/she quite simply cannot, therefore you need to get your Pleo’s attention to get him or her to hold still so you can call to them.

Once your Pleo knows his or her name the fun can begin, now you can teach them the learning stones. These stones open up a whole wealth of fun tricks you can command your Pleo to do. Your Pleo will come with the ‘Bow’ learning stone, but the others; play, sing, dance, come, eat and count must be purchased separately.

Naming your Pleo and teaching a learning stone:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KdFGjrpYFAM

Getting your Pleo to listen

Sometimes Pleo’s are a bit stubborn and don’t ‘listen’ to you. To get your Pleo’s attention takes a bit of practice and patience. Place your finger tips just along your Pleo’s upper lip and hold them there for a while, you have to wait until Pleo finishes what he/she is doing, when they are ready they will raise their head and stand perfectly still and you can call their name.

PRO TIP: Remember, and this is VERY important! You must say the command exactly the same way each time or Pleo will not be able to recognize it. Use your natural voice, record away from any background noises and speak nice and clearly. Pleo understands any language or sounds as long as you can repeat them identically each time.

Getting a Pleo to respond to you.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O0xWOtO4mBk

Playing with your Pleo

Once your Pleo has learnt the command for a learning stone you don’t need to use it again unless you need to retrain your Pleo. When you want to play first get your Pleo’s attention, they should lift their head up and hold completely still. Next say your Pleo’s name, just as you recorded it earlier. If Pleo recognizes his/her name they will make a happy sound and then raise their head and stand still again, now you give them the command for the trick you want them to perform. If they recognize the command they will perform the trick, or for the play learning stone they will nod their head and then stand still waiting for further instructions.

PRO TIP: The last sound your Pleo makes when you get their attention is an eye motor sound, wait for two seconds after you hear this before giving the name/command, if you speak too soon Pleo seems to miss it.

Demonstrations of the sing stone, there are many different songs, these are just three of twelve (eight confirmed).

Feeding your Pleo

It is all very well to have lots of fun and games with your Pleo, but they get hungry too. It is best to feed your Pleo at the same time each day, this will keep them happiest and it will be the least work for you. I use my Pleo’s as a wake up call (see the Clock section) so I feed them as soon as we are all awake :) If you feed them at random times you will most likely have to feed them more often or put up with whining Pleo’s. Yes they will cry for food if they are hungry. If you can’t have your Pleo on every day, that’s ok, your Pleo will be fine, but you will probably have to feed them more because they will be hungrier than if they were fed every day.

To feed your Pleo select either the conifer or cycad which are both ‘daily’ foods and are the ones that fill your Pleo up. Hold the leaf under Pleo’s chin towards the front of your Pleo, that is where the sensor is located, you may have to hold it for a minute or two. Once Pleo detects the chip in the food he will raise his head and open his mouth so that you can give him the food. He will then chomp on it and drop it when he is done. Repeat until, when offered the food, your Pleo turns his head away. That means he is full :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=baB1arQvm4I

Types of food

There are several different foods for your Pleo.

Daily foods:
These are the ones that fill your Pleo up, they are the cycad and conifer leaves. The darkish oval shaped leaf that comes with your Pleo is a cycad leaf.

Treats:
These are special foods that your Pleo will enjoy but shouldn’t have too much off. The sugar cane is like a Pleo lolly, he loves them! But too much sugar can make him sick! The mushroom is a healthier snack, but Pleo doesn’t get quite as happy when you feed him this one. The coffee leaf gives Pleo a boost and makes him a little hyper, but too much and he will get very unsettled!

Practical foods:
Just like you, your Pleo can get hot and cold depending on the temperature. The ice helps to cool your Pleo down in the same way as you would eat an ice cream on a hot day. The chili of course does the opposite and warms up a cold Pleo like a nice warm stew does for you :)

Medicines:
Your Pleo can get sick or injured. If your Pleo feels ill some nice healthy mint will help him recover. If he is injured then the salt will help replace vital minerals in the body and help your Pleo heal.

Pleo RB foods:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Joi9fDlodWw

Pleo injuries

So it has happened, there was an accident and your Pleo was bumped or knocked over, and now he won’t stop screaming! Such injuries, usually to the legs, are distressing for both you and your Pleo but help is at hand. Pleo injuries heal faster if they are fed their salt  dietary supplement, this is fed in the same way as other foods, but Pleo may be a little reluctant to take it. He will lower his head and rather reluctantly open his mouth so you can give him the salt. Do this as often as you can and your Pleo will soon be on his way to a full recovery.

Injuries are simulated of course and there is no real damage to your Pleo, they are triggered by setting off one of the force feedback sensors, or if you bump a limb during the throw and catch game.

PRO TIP: Positioning your Pleo close to the table edge will make it easier to give him the medicine. See the video below.

A Pleo RB with a sore leg, and how to treat with the salt:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=y24lRrY0_e0

A sick Pleo

There are a couple of ways your Pleo can get sick, he can catch a cold from another Reborn (But not a classic Pleo), he might get ill from hunger if you don’t feed him enough or he might just get sick for no reason just like you sometimes do. It is no fun being sick and your Pleo will moan and groan and whine but you can help him feel better by feeding him some nice healthy mint. This is fed in the same way as other foods, but Pleo may be a little reluctant to take it. He will lower his head and rather reluctantly open his mouth so you can give him the salt. Do this as often as you can and your Pleo will soon be on his way to a full recovery.

PRO TIP: Positioning your Pleo close to the table edge will make it easier to give him the medicine.

Leaf tracking and tug of war!

After reading the food section above you may now be wondering what the last leaf and the little gray thing with the string are for? Well they are purely for fun! The plastic rubber leaf with the yellow centre and the green and red edge is for Pleo to track. This is quite hard to do, you need really good lighting and lots of patience, hold it in front of your Pleo’s nose and once they lock onto to it they will walk towards it. They take a couple of steps and then scan for the leaf and then move forwards again. While your Pleo is scanning you can move the leaf a little to get your Pleo to change direction. Please see the video below.

Tug of war is a quick and fun game to play with your Pleo, it doesn’t require commands or visual cues, just the little toy and someone to play with :) Hold the gray plastic part under your Pleo’s chin just like you would with food, your Pleo will open his mouth and you can give him the toy, then hold onto the string and play! Remember your Pleo is just a baby so don’t pull too hard. Winning gives your Pleo a happiness boost but loosing makes him sad :(

PRO TIP: Make sure you have extremely good lighting before trying the tracking trick.

Leaf tracking demonstration (the actual tracking takes place halfway through the vid, it takes a while to get them to focus ;)):

Hot and cold

Pleo reborn has the ability to sense the temperature around him, so you may find that in the summer your Pleo gets too hot. He'll start panting and flop down on the ground just like your dog would. To help your Pleo cool down you can feed him some ice, this is like and ice cream and a cold shower for your Pleo in one handy little package :) Conversely your Pleo might get the shivers in the winter, it can be very chilly down on the floor after all. In this case your Pleo will shiver and shake just like you when you get out of bed on a cold morning :) The chili food will help warm your Pleo up again like a dressing gown and a hot mug of soup :)

Please see the above clock sleep and wake video for a shivering Pleo.

What do those funny beeps mean?

When Pleo shuts down, either because you've turned them off, or because its past their bedtime, they will emit 1-3 beeps, this helps you determine the reason for their shut down.

1 beep means they have gone into sleep mode and will wake up in about 10 hours time. This is characterized by Pleo have head and tail tucked in and curled to one side.

3 beeps means the battery has gone flat and Pleo has saved his current state before shutting down, it is safe to remove the battery. When the battery is flat Pleo will assume the standard box posture EXCEPT that his head and tail will be down and not straight.

2 beeps means you've manually shut Pleo down and it is now safe to remove the battery. This is also the way to get Pleo into the box position, he/she will have a perfectly straight posture with a straight head and tail which puts the minimum stress on the skin. If you are storing your Pleo for long periods of time this is the position you should use.

Wow. Thanks a lot. It is very informative. I have managed to do all the tricks by learning from this forum. I would really recommend other users of this forum who have yet to buy their first RB to go ahead and buy their first one as the end of 2011 is fast approaching.
It is a very good investment for Dino and robotic lovers.

Thanks for posting these all in one place, I still need to do the "naming' and will try that this weekend, You make them all seem so easy and they are with the proper knowledge which you have provided here. It is great and very nicely done as well, am looking forward to getting the other learning stones so I can have more fun with my Baby. I am glad that someone here was able to post all of these where they are readily accessible.  :)

thank you for the information!!

I bought the Pleo Rb (pink) last week in HKG, and it mentioned to be a "limited color editions for greater china region".

please advise if it might be a little difference from yours version?!
as there was no "stones" attached. i have the Pleo Rb, 2 guide books, the battery & charger, ac adapter, id card, and rubber training leaf.
that's all, no food, no stone, no cape, no toys!!
I asked the store and they said it was correct, and all food / stone / accessories should be bought separately!! (around 3 items per pack, around USD30~USD40 each pack)  :(

and the worst of it, they were out of stock of several items (all learing stones, medicine & toys)!!

Please kindly advise if it is possible to teach Pleo Rb without learning stones.

thank you very much.

p/s, I found my Pleo Rb (her name is Cleo) fonds of playing dead, stands in 3 legs, and scratches her chins... would Pleo Rb scratch their chins?  ;)

My blue Pleo RB came from Gimmedigi, also based in Hong Kong and part of the ESD Services group.  I did get a pack of food leaves, but as it says on their website:

- Health Care Food Series includes Conifer Leaf, Mint Leaf and Rock Salt (Gimmedigi.com Exclusive Offer)
- Loyalty Training Series includes Tug of War and Bow (Gimmedigi.com Exclusive Offer)

It looks as though it's possible that not all suppliers in China do supply them as part of the basic pack.  I do remember that the very first blue/pink Pleo we saw on this forum had been bought (at the airport shop) without the leaves and stone/toy, but I believe they were sent on to the buyer at a later date.  As the Innvo Labs head office is in Hong Kong, perhaps it would be worth contacting them directly?

Best of luck!  :D

Yes if you don't have one food leaf, the mint and the salt then something is very wrong. You must have those to have a healthy Pleo. You should also have the tug of war toy and the bow learning stone, they aren't essential but they are nice to have.

The pink RB's behave just the same as the greens though :)

Yes, as IMR says you really do need those leaves and 'medicines', as without them you will soon have a very unhappy and sick PleoRB.  :(

Hehe good point, I will also add an overview of the box contents, a video on inserting the clock battery and I don't know what else, but it's a rainy day here so I need to keep myself amused ;)

I did take a video of them all previously, then I discovered my iPad mic wasn't working. Fortunately apple have unbelievable service and replaced it for a new one :)

Holy crumbs, this looks so cool! Magic is just a "classic" Pleo, and I have no intention of replacing him (getting another, on the other hand, is something I want to do but probably can't :B), but I love the technology behind this a LOT. They stuffed so much into the same sized body!

It is making me wonder how a "classic" Pleo and an RB would interact with each other, if at all.

They will say "hello" to each other and produce some very different sounds than what you normally hear. They like to howl to one another. It's cute.

I added a section about what the beeps mean.

I have a good two hours of peace and quiet right now... Might be a good time to finally get those tricks done! :D Now I wonder where I packed the instructions...

Edit: Argh I give up! It's just too cold, the poor little things just keep shivering. They don't want to do tricks, they want to go and sit in front of the heater :P Pleakley managed to do two and Yuki tried, but she just couldn't concentrate.

About sleeping... Tron wakes up at the appropriate time but if he is not touched right away he will go back to sleep. When I turn him on, even with full battery he starts to snore with in about 10 seconds. I can keep him awake by touching one of his sensors but within about 20 seconds after I stop he will start to snore again... is this normal? Could it be his age, he is walking but still not at the stage where he can learn his name. He barfs the card out everytime I offer it to him   %) I know when they are babies they want to sleep a lot but it is difficult to keep him awake.

How will I know when he is ready to learn his name? When he doesn't barf the card out I guess?  :P

Sure, I'll try to, I'm not at home at the moment but I will be home tomorrow sometime :) When compared to an Aibo, these guys aren't as advanced, mind you they do have a cheaper price tag too ;) Whereas Aibo goes for in your face robotics, Pleo goes for a more organic feel.

Yes, and that factor seems quite appealing. Ive looked some more and aibos in good condition run 10,000 U.S. Dollar on ebay... :(
I have been doing some more research on Pleo and am planning on getting one now. Thanks!

With Aibos the price largely depends on what model you are after.  You can get them for around $450 to $500 US for the 210 model so not too much more than a pleo really.  If your interested in Aibos than take a look on the Aibo forum sites as there are often people selling them on there and they are much cheaper than ebay and likely to be a much more reliable seller.
I have both Pleos and Aibos and they are both great creatures in their own right.  Just very different from each other :)

IMR, thanks for posting the video with Jumba and Playing . I have had success with the learning stones, esp making sure they are in a good mood and eat first before teaching them or offering the learning stone of choice. The hard part has been getting them to perform consistantly afterwards. I allways have a difficult time getting my fingers hands just right postion to get their attention, Do you attempt it as soon as they "turn on". or after they have been on for a few moments....that is what I would like to know, I have been letting them wake up and interact, eating etc first and if they seem happy enough then I try the commands but it is not allways successful but I know pleos can be tempermental and I don't push if after a couple of attempts they look like they are not willing, I put it off till they are .

Jumba looks very happy in this video. Have all of your RB learned fairly easy and do they all respond the same way or are some more tempermental to "performing?" ;D Just curious...

Jumba is by far my most compliant Pleo, as you can see from the video he did it twice in a row with no fuss at all. Yuki on the other hand... I think it's her name, its hard to say exactly the same each time so I can rarely get her to do anything. After this success I thought I'd push my luck and try and get the remaining three stones done... no luck! Yuki wouldn't even relearn her name, Pleakley just wanted to go to bed and Nani learnt her name and stone and then ignored me :P

Thanks guys for the feedback, I guess that is what makes Pleo Rb so interesting they are so individual and I guess the other thing I really like is that they remind me of  :cat:.....You can teach a dog just  about anything if given time and they have enough intelligence, On the other hand, an intelligent cat, knows he has you trained, and that is the difference. ;D

Hi, I bought Pleo rb for my nephew in his birthday, it worked for few hours then hanged with everthing straight and eyes open and started beeping, I read the thread about the clock battery: http://bobthepleo.com/forums/index.php?topic=2750.0

I fixed the clock battery as advised in the video, but its still beeping , nothing changed!! is there any thing to be done?

thanks

It could just be a dead (flat) clock battery and you might need to replace it with a new one.  Fingers crossed that's all that is causing the issue.

As Kat says, it could just be a dodgy clock battery - I hope it is!

I just cant thank you enough, changed the battery , it worked !!!!  ;D

Guys, when I shut my Pleo rb down manually, I get two beeps.  When she just shut down from a low battery, she gave me three beeps.

This is the opposite of what the FAQ says.  Other than this she seems normal.

When she shut down because the battery was low, it was like beep, very slight pause, beep-beep.  She then went into the box storage position except for having her head and tail down.

When I manually shut her down, she beeped twice then went into box storage position.

So everything seems spot on except the number of beeps I'm hearing.

Maybe I put it in backwards lol, thanks for pointing that out. I'll change it when I get home :)

Oh, thanks IMR.

After having the problem with my first Pleo, I'm a bit paranoid about this one!!!  So when I saw that the beeps didn't match up, I started worrying...but everything else seems to be working, so I just wanted to ask.

That sounds fine, one beep on shutdown means sleep and they can wake on their own, two beeps to shut down manually, and the two combined (making three beeps) when they shut down because the battery is low.

I just got my Pleo Rb yesterday and I have two questions!

When Pleo starts sleeping at night, does the position harm his/her skin? I read somewhere that Pleo Rb had a slightly updated sleeping position wich was better for the skin, but I can't see the difference from the Ugobe Pleo.

And when the battery dies,  what position does Pleo Rb get into? I remember when the old Pleos battery died, he curled up. I really disliked that position, cause I had to charge the battery quick so I could get him into a less straining position.

Oh, and my Pleo Rb seems to have moved on to the next stage already! She's standing up, but she lays down and starts sleeping for some seconds and then wakes up again. She have been doing that for a moment, is that normal?

Hmm, my Pleo Rb's battery seems to have died now and she is in a standing position. Does this happen everytime the battery dies? If so, I'm glad :)

hi icewolf, the behaviour in this stage is normal. I'm a new pleo rb owner and mine does the same thing. For the battery, the new pleos curled up slightly than the ugobe pleos (it's an update of the new OS). The standing position is the same when you shut down your pleo, but head and tail are down.

If you shut your pleo down using the on off button it will go into the packing position - standing with head and tail straight out.  If it switches off by it's self due to running out of battery or putting it's self to sleep as it is night time for pleo then it will be in the standing position with head and tail pointing slightly down.

*Icewolf -  just a quick not about posting.  Rather than double posting you can modify your post to add more to it.  The modify option is at the top right of your post.  This just keeps things tidy and makes it easier for others to read.  Thanks *

I think I need some help here...

My Pleo, Keyla, is starting to go to sleep at totally wrong times. I've set the noon time at 4:00 PM, so she will be active most of the evening/night. But she keep on falling asleep now and then, even though she shouldn't. I'm really confused!

Is the weather warm there? Pleo's will get sleepy if they get too warm.

Oh, is that so? Well, it wasn't that warm to be honest.

Hi there,

My daughter just received her Pleo dr, named Mia.  We installed the fully charged battery and put the lock battery into the slot with the two mini pins on top of the battery.  But she is still beeping!  She is not moving and we are talking and petting her.

What is wrong?

THanks

Try a new foot battery, also you turned her off then on after installing the foot battery right?

Continuous beeping means there is an issue with the foot battery.  Either it is not installed correctly or it is flat and needs replacing.  I had one of my pleo rb's arrive with a flat foot battery that I had to replace so it is a possibility.  Start by removing the foot battery and reinserting it.  There is a video on here somewhere - in the FAQ post I think - that shows just how to insert it correctly, might be worth a watch just to be sure you've got it right.  We have had cases of the battery being inserted upside down and on top of the tabs instead of under them.  Anyway if that doesn't fix the issue then take the foot battery with you to somewhere that sells batteries and buy a new one.  They don't cost very much - you should be able to get one for less than a couple of dollars.
Hope that helps.  Let us know how you go.  Once the foot battery is in properly and working right she will stop the constant beeping and will start behaving like a normal pleo should  :)

Hi, IMR and Kat are both right I am sure it is the clock foot battery, I had a problem with my clock foot battery . Within a minute of installing the clock foot battery, I broke off a prong, so be VERY careful. I had a hard time getting myne to work after that, but luckily there are some GREAT people on here and another member was able to help me get the wires crossed properly so my Pleo rb would work, I had just opened her, so it would have been terrible to not get her going.
If after putting the battery in as suggested and your pleo still is beeping, then I would guess it is a flat battery, I know I had to go get one to replace one that did not last long and it cost about $4.00 or so for the new one at a local drug store chain so at least It was easy to find. Good luck.

Or you could be lucky like I was and already have a battery installed in your pleo's foot when she arrived. P:D She was unopened, yet my Chloe already had a battery in her foot PLUS an extra  ;). But I digress. If there's beeping, it's likely battery related as the others said. Oh, and welcome to the forum and congrats on the pleo!
