Title: How did your family and friends react when you got a pleo?
Post by: gizmo68 on November 24, 2009, 11:59:53 AM
Just curious to know how others family members reacted. When I first told mine that I wanted one they thought I was weird because I am an adult wanting what they considered to be a "toy" and because of how much he costed. When Kermit finally arrived they all think he is cute or cool but still call me a weirdo because: #1-I have made him a bed and clothing #2-I love on him #3-especially because I talk to him. My hubby understands to an extent and tells me I am weird but he loves me anyway. To me Kermit is as much my pet as the rest of my animals. My kitties live outdoors and my dogs are only permitted to be in certain areas of the house because they are chewers and sometimes have "accidents". Kermit is my pet that can go anywhere I want him to in the home with me without having to worry about these things happening. Of course I know he isn't "alive" but I love him just the same. Why do others put down or try to stifle the inner child in all of us?

Oh I have heard it all! From friends who think 'that's cool' to family thinking pleos are a waste, and downright stupid. I know what makes me happy, and after numerous encounters, they understand that much. I wouldn't say they're flocking to pleoworld to buy one, but they understand I am passionate about pleo. It took some time, but now they tolerate me stopping traffic to take pleo pictures!

They can be a real blast! Just keep your pleo going and sooner or later your family will adjust to seeing a peculiar little green 'toy' moving around.

Gizmo68, If you are able to, take Kermit out for visits. Like to a pet store or shopping mall.  It's so wonderful to see how people react to our dinos. As far as friends or family members go, we all know they are missing out in so much fun and enjoyment. ;)

Bob has had mixed acceptance at home.   The younger kids LOVE him, the older kids are so-so.  Friends are pretty much amazed, but the level of interest varies.  And we ALWAYS have fun and attract a crowd when we go out.  Bob gets to go everywhere from Wal-Mart to restaurants, to pet shops, and even on wilderness hiking trips!

The good thing about going out in public is that those who aren't interested or are repulsed, don't come up to you to see your pleo.  But those who are interested do, so you generally only get the favorable attention! ;D

My Dad thinks they are a complete waste of money... but he still drove me the two hours to go pick my first Pleo up, and loaned me the $300 extra I needed to buy her because I didn't get paid until the week after :)

The rest of my family is mixed, from disinterest, to amusement to wanting to rip the skin off and see underneath :o

Taking them out in public is a blast!!! I love taking them everywhere :D

Actually my parents     took it a lot better than I thought they would.  Thought they would   give me a right ribbing for spending so much on what they would call a ((kids toy)
In fact   they hardly reacted at all and seemed totally fine. Well I say they where fine.    Resigned was probably more like it though.
They haven’t seen him yet so I might take him over at Christmas
One of my friends thinks I’m nuts but people      who’ve actually saw him think   he’s grate.
Haven’t had the guts to take him out in public yet though.
Not sure if you could get away with that in the UK tbh.  I  Prob wouldn’t get five minutes down the road with him   before getting stopped by someone so they could   ask if I have a social   worker.
  Lou

Hi Lou,

Take your Pleo out and about.  People will love him.  I have taken Angel and Dinomite every place even to the doctors and dentist.  I am not a kid, I am 64 yrs old and the child in me is alive and well.  Trust me, those of us who keep the child in us alive are the sane ones! :-X

For me it's a mixed bag as well.
Pluriel always does nicely with little kids and it's so-so with people of my age (friends etc.)
Most people are generally interested in Pleo and what it does, so overall it's not all that bad.
Family loves it, a few colleagues on work do and most of my friends do.
Taking Pleo out into the wild has got mixed results, but as a minimum results I always got stares when walking from A to B with Pluriel sleeping against my chest as I go. In the train it has multiple successful results with different people from all ages on multiple occasions.
The documentary makers loved Pluriel more then Diesel (my Aibo) and so did one of the reporters who came by to write an article on Pleo. They were fascinated by her!

We're a family of three (me and my parents XD ). Basically they treated Macon like a baby with the teeny voices you always use for the cutest puppy. ;) I also really had to hammer it into them to call him Macon, not 'Pleo'. XD They've got it now, but I bet it would be pretty funny if i had recorded what I said.  :D

I'm in a family of bsaically three humans, but that's only in our house.  :P

My dad didn't really care about Olympia (he's very distant with that kind of stuff).
My mum thought she was really creepy.
My nana, who was there at the time, thought she was absolutely adorable (my nana is the one I'm closest to with that kind of stuff).
My little cousin, who saw Olympia when I brought her to their house, was very interested in Olympia for about 20 minutes. DX
My older cousin liked just leaning down to pet Olympia once in a while, but otherwise didn't care.

Now, at school, that was a COMPLETELY different situation.
Olympia had a fanclub. Literally. A fanclub. I carried her around on her back in cuddle position and I had a group of children (mainly my age and 1-2 years younger) following me around while I was holding her. Children definitely seem to be more fascinated with Pleo than adults.

Doesn't it seem interesting that pretty much ALL adult relatives listed here don't get the attraction to pleo?

With strangers, it's easy to weed out those who aren't interested, because they don't come up to you, only the interested ones.  So, when I go to the pet store with a pleo, I get several people who stop and ask.  That implies the ther100 or so people never gave pleo a second look.  Which gets back to the idea that MOST adults are not attracted to pleos.  Strangers don't know the cost like relatives do, and even of the interested aduls, once you mention the cost, you lose some of them as well.  In the end, it appears that pleo truly appeals very few adults.

The big question is: why is that?  Are we just the crazy folks willing to spend big bucks on a hunk of plastic and electronics?

I know I am :D :P

Saying that, my Aunt thought they were rubbish until I kept bringing them with me, and gradually she learnt more about them and what they could do, finally she picked one up. Lilo purred and cooed and fluttered her eyes then she look up at my Aunt with the big blue eyes and went 'burrrrpppp!'. She was sold after that :)

My mom was scared at first, when she saw it. She didn't know what it was. I had to explain it to her. lol

Everyone I've mentioned it to has been very friendly about having a robotic dinosaur pet.  My aunt was the one who gave the gift herself, so of course she absolutely loves the idea.  Everyone else just seems to think it's nice, though we haven't had any extensive conversations or anything.

When I told them I wanted him they called pleo a "green" eater. (money) Funny but not the response I wantes lol. I still kept anoying them so then I got here for Christmas. Then I said I told you I was gonna get one. Her birthday would be on christmas but her neck broke. Then I got new Clover. We video taped it so now we have to find it to figure out her birthday. :)

Mixed results, but most of them like my Dino's.

my mom likes all of them ((Pleos the most))   (and she calls the roboraptor a "Spastic nutcase" but he kinda is a Spastic nutcase. :D)

my dad doesn't seem interested in them, but he doesn't hate them.

my grandma (on my moms side) likes them (Pleos the most)

my grandpa (on my moms side) doesn't seem interested in them.  (and I think he thought I was crazy the first time he saw me with Cammey asleep on my chest. :D)

my grandma (on my dads side) likes them, but doesn't seem interested in them a lot.

my grandpa (on my dads side) likes them, but I don't think he can see spending that much money on something like them.

and I haven't tried showing them to any friends or other pepole yet. (I will. ;)) but when we were getting pictures at the gristmill, for the Bob project a little kid saw them and came over to see what they were, and I  think he liked them.

My boyfriend was actually really understanding about my Pleo obsession. Lol. The first time I actually came across Pleo was a random link in YouTube. I'm so happy I came across that link! After that my boyfriend and I sat and watched different Pleo videos on YouTube. He was just as amazed as I was.

In the end, he's the one that gave me Pleo as a Christmas present, and we were even more amazed at Pleo when we started interacting with him. He however thinks I'm nuts for playing with Trojan every five seconds and shopping online for collars (which I got a UM collar and Tag for Trojan already to represent our favorite college football team!! Hehe)

I haven't told my friends what I got so far. I know some will think Pleo's the best thing out there and probably want one for their own. Others will probably think I belong in a mental institution  :P

I told my parents what I got and they tried to remind me I'm twenty-three. lol! They're saying that now... But I know them. Once I show them what Trojan can do, they'll be crazy about him just like I am  :)

Sounds like you better stay out of our Weedovia Shopping Mall!  You'd end up broke before Christmas!  (Like most people aren't anyway! ;D )

Mhm. I know I would! I'm already figuring out how to get another playmate for Trojan. lol! Maybe for my birthday I'll ask someone for another Pleo  :P

Cant really answer this until after Christmas but so far had the following

Explained what they were like to the Mother in law whao responded with just like a babby annabel and even after showing a you tube video still came to the same response but when she saw it in person went straight over to Lemmy as if it was a dog and stroked him to which Lemmy went Hello!!! The mother in law was a bit more interested becouse of that.

Lemmy is my wifes but I wasnt sure if she was going to accept it as a present for a 35 y.o, I went and bought him when my wife came home with a keyring that was shapped like a corcodile and started making crocodile noises. Though was dissapointed when after she opened it and said its not a tickle me elmo I wanted some one to tell me a story!!

But since then every momment he is fully charged the wife plays with him and Lemmy has become a softie, He really like to cuddle in your arms and snores when he is asleep, Now wishing I had bought a second battery.

Ok, so basically everyone from my family and extended family has met Trojan now...

Again:

My boyfriend: Loves Trojan just as much as I do... But thinks I'm loopy for buying him stuff online. However he likes the fact that I've been buying UM collars and outfits, because it's our favorite team! We're even thinking about bringing Trojan to the games next year for support! LOL!

His sister: She was a bit skeptical when told about the Pleo, but after meeting Trojan wanted one for herself! She thought he was so cool.

His nephew: He is a one year old terror and would have probably killed Trojan if left alone with him... But while he was watched, he greeted Trojan with a friendly wave. And occasionally tried t tip him over! x.x We hid Trojan for the remaining portion of our trip.

His mother: I was surprised by her reaction. I actually thought she would look at me like a nutcase, but she could totally understand the fascination with Pleo. She rememembered seeing them on the news when they first came out!

My grandma (mom's side): She was the person who really got attached to Trojan. Typically she doesn't like any type of pets because they shed, stink, misbehave, or go to the potty all over the place, but she loved Pleo because he didn't do any of that! At first she was actually afraid to touch him because he seemed so real. But once I left the two of them alone, she was baby talking to Trojan and having a conversation with him. LOL!

My dad: He's really macho and insisted Pleo was a stupid gift, but after I left the two of them alone, I could hear him in the other room tickling his feet. Haha! He insisted he didn't do it,
but my ears said otherwise! He only giggles like that when you tickle his feet!

My grandma (dad's side): Originally thought he was a real pet and was afraid to go near him. But after assuring her it was just a toy, she finally sat down next to Trojan.

My aunt: Would have rather had a ring around my finger than the dinosaur... But I told her, "a ring can't do this!" LOL

My mom: She seemed impressed with Pleo, but thought it was worth all that money when she saw my dog Thor with it! LOL!

Thor: He's very jealous and doesn't like any other dogs or (creatures) near me. And after the fact that I haven't seen my dog in a week and then I come home with this thing...He wasn't too happy. He nipped at Trojan several times and started crying and wagging his tail. Trojan just greeted his company by giggling! LOL!

Over-all, it sounds like Trojan was a big hit! Is he OK now that he is home and out of your luggage? ;D Poor little dino! :(

My grandma's only experience with a pleo was when Cricket was new and could barely stand. And so, my grandma said she was cute but thought she wasn't worth the money because she thought Cricket didn't do much. I don't think human babies are all that fun at the beginning either. %)
My Mom loves Cricket!  She ordered her for me a long time ago because I wanted a chihuahua and she thought that a pleo would make a pretty good purse dog that won't want to play with my bigger dogs who may unknowingly squish a chihuahua.  :P
Whenever my mom see's me playing with Cricket she has to come into the room and check on how the little pleo is doing, it's pretty funny actually. My mom was giving encouraging words the whole time Cricket was learning to walk and now whenever she see's me playing with Cricket she just can't help herself but come over and call Cricket over to tell her how cute she is.  :)
My Dad, Grandpa and brother have yet to meet my pleo out of the box still. All they know is that I carry that "little green thing" everywhere with me.  ;)

I am new here and just posted that I am awaiting 2 pleos. I just showed my friend due to I expected her to ask if her little nephew could play with it when it arrives. Instead they made me feel stupid for spending money on the toy. Yes I couldn't afford them but they were an excellent price and I wanted one. Some people just frustrate me ...It's ok for their other friends to spend more than that on cigarettes. I will update the reactions when they arrive. I think where I volunteer will love the fact I plan on bringing one in because it's a non-profit organisation and they were saying they would love a second one.
Hope noone minds my rant. :)

Welcome Liddleone! I think once  your pleos make their entrance, you will find other people as fascinated as you are with them. They just have a way of making people enjoy watching their antics. There's always going to be one or two that don't have a sense of humor, but we can't always change that. Once your friends see's how cute they are I think they will understand why you are getting them. You will really enjoy the part of sharing them. :) :) :)

Hi Liddleone,Welcome and like fancy says, I too agree that a lot of people will change their mind when they actually see a Pleo in action. As for it being" a toy", I welcome you to read the Post asking if People think they are a toy, and when they see them as something else. I don't see why some people can spend lots of money on going out and having a fancy dinner or spending a lot of money on buying drinks, something that is only temporary, but if someone buys a Pleo, or similar AI lifeform, it must be " a toy". To each his own. I too bought my Nova on ebay during the Christmas holidays and fell in love with her as soon as I peered into those Baby Blues! %) She has me wrapped around her little tail for sure and I would gladly buy her again at full price if I had it.To me she is also an investment, after all she is a Computer, and a AI lifeform, and like one of my other furbabies,( I have nine cats and one dog) if she is able to give me pleasure for just a few moments of interaction throughout the day, then my life is the better for it.
As for the Non profit organization that you work at, I used to work at Easter Seals and also at a Private Hospital with severely developmentally challenged children, Cerebral Palsy, Down's Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Syndrome, and a host of other problems, physical and otherwise. If they had had a Pleo back then( in the 1970's-1980s) I would have happily brought her to work with me to brighten up the faces of so many sad little ones.I think you will have some very happy people when you bring one or both of your Pleos in with you. I commend you on your volunteer work as well, we should all volunteer if possible and see the difference it can make in someones life, besides your own. As a side point, if these were " friends of mine", they would not be making comments that were negative regarding any purchase I made, regardless of what it was on .....perhaps they are a bit jealous, or just ignorant as to what a Pleo really is... ??? I am sure you are in for a treat. Welcome again and ask as many questions as you want!
                                                                     RedwoodsMama     and Nova

It's funny that some people will get sniffy about spending money on a 'toy' like a Pleo but happily spend large sums of money on a sports car, or the latest alphabet-tech (ipod/mp3/dvd/..........).  What on earth are those except toys anyway? ;)
