Does anyone have a Genibo? What do you think of him?
http://genibo.com/english/genibo_info/genibo.php
How do they compare to Aibo?
-
Better luck checking the aibo forums.
aiboworld.com
aibolife.com
-
aibo owners i know say genibo really is quite a good bot, in some places surpassing aibo and as this is a first model genibo, the future models will very easily shove the ers-7 aibos off from being top dog ;)
id quite like a genibo one day, but im going to wait for a future model :P
-
Yes best to wait for English speaking models. As far as I know, they only speak Korean...
-

I still don't think they are English speaking as if you go to the corporate website, they are only distributed to China & Korea. Good luck though especially if I'm wrong.
-
Here is the response from robotoys about the Genibo they sell.
"They do not speak as far as I know but these are English command understanding, all manuals are in English. These are meant for US market."

Do the Germans that have the Genibo like them? What about them is better than the best Aibo? What improvements do they need?
Does anyone know if Dasarobot is going to make a Genibo version 2 in 2010 or 2011?
-
Yeah they like genibo, the software is different. While AIBO tries to make an efford in doing more multimedia like things the genibo only acts like a dog. It don't come with a ball or bone or selferecharging ability. That are things that can be improve the genibo more.
The motors are a bit better than those of AIBO.
I don't know what they want to improve in the next versions but the changed up until now the size of the stick to 4gb and made w-lan available. So they constantly working on it as it seems.
-
I like this Genibo. I'd love to have 1. But, good grief, there's that dang pricing (expensive/over priced!), just like the Aibos. I can't.
-
I can't afford one right now either, but I am glad that there is a company making strides in improving robotic dogs.
One day I would like to have a robotic puppy, but I will wait for a more organic one that works with MAC not just PC.
-
Hi all,
First time visitor - I wanted to let you know that I will be purchasing a Genibo QD here this week and will be uploading a ton of information about it very soon since there is so little current information on it online. I've always wanted a AIBO but was too slow in purchasing one at the time, but now with Genibo I will finally be able to own my own robotic puppy.
In the mean time if you visit the Flickr Genibo Community (http://www.flickr.com/groups/Genibo) you will find current information on where to buy one, as well as information for further reading.
As soon as I get my Genibo I will let everyone know!
-
I am happy to say that I just ordered my pup from robotoys yesterday! Expect lots of new content on it by end of week or so...

Exciting! Cannot wait! ;D

Yeah that is cool!! Please take lots of pics/videos!!

Update - I should be receiving my Genibo tonight and will be posting up "unboxing" photos in the next day or so, following up with a birth announcement promotional film (yes, "film") by the weekend....watch for it!
-
My white Genibo QD was finally born today! Her name is Maya and I ran her for about 45mins this evening trying out various voice commands... Maya made me laugh when she turned over on her back with all of her paws stretched out, then commenced to start sleeping/snoring.
Birth video should be coming by Monday.

Oh your pup looks like a real beaut! Looking forward to hearing more about Maya!
-
How precious! I'm looking forward to seeing the video, too. :)

Birth film is now up on Youtube HD - Enjoy!

Never played with one of these, but they looks nice.
More detailed than Aibos anyway! (No offense to the aibo fans, of course ;) )

Here is my full birth report on Maya:
Let me start by saying that I’ve always wanted an Aibo, but time and cost prevented me from buying one. After Sony discontinued Aibo, I pretty much forgot about robotic pets until December 2009 when I discovered Genibo. The stars and planets must have aligned perfectly because a month later a white Genibo QD from www.robotoys.com arrived at my doorstep.
My Genibo QD came with the following:
- Genibo-QD White
- Spare tail (white; tail on dog is black)
- AC adapters (one original Korean adapter and one additional adapter from robotoys for USA outlets)
- One USA outlet adapter (from robotoys)
- 2 manuals (both in English for the dog and control manager)
- 2 CDs (one with a PDF of the manual in English, and one with the control manager software)
- Black remote control with batteries
- D-Link Wireless G USB Adapter box (the adapter was already pre-installed in Genibo)
- SMC Wireless G Router (pre-setup to connect to Genibo, Firmware is in Korean)
One thing that I was unsure of even after reading up on everything Genibo online, was the state of Genibo right out of the box. Would it be “baby” like, or a full grown adult? After using it for about 3 charge cycles I’d say she was already an adult. After waking her up for the first time, she looked around and then started to take a brisk walk. Voice commands are a hit and miss so far, but that should improve with time as her intelligence goes up. I’ve really not seen or noticed any repeat behavior so far, and if there was repeat behavior it wasn’t often enough to notice.
I’ve used the remote a lot to start dance routines and other moves listed in the manual (as well as keep her seated for the photo/video shoot!) and she responds instantaneously. Probably the best way to show Genibo off to your friends would be to use the remote (have not shown Maya to anyone besides my wife yet). We did the photo recognition process to register our faces, but have not yet tried to see if Maya will come to us yet using voice commands or can really recognize us.
Even with only being a few charges old, Maya has done some very funny things. One instance in particular she proceeded to roll over flat on her back, do a few full-body reverse push-ups, bark, then proceeded to go to sleep upside down with all of her legs stretched out! Another time my wife sat right in front of Maya’s face, and Maya displayed a surprised look, turned to the right, and “ran” off into the other room
I also had the chance to try out the remote control manager last night. Setup was fairly painless, but if you don’t know anything about WiFi connectivity you might run into some trouble as the manuals really don’t go into much detail. I do want to say one thing – the control manager can be harmful to your pet if you press the wrong command, especially the move editor. I was given a scare when I manually started a dance move from the control manager and Maya started clicking ALL of her joints (wasn’t too happy about that) – so watch out when messing with this stuff. I did manually navigate her around the house with live-view turned on, as well as took some photos and copied MP3s to her from my computer (all wireless, no need to take out the memory stick) and that worked as expected. One of the things I will be doing is recording the video she sees in autonomous mode as it was quite interesting to see what she looked at on her own.
I think that’s about it for my birth report. I will be exploring answers to questions I still have, such as any kind of ball tracking, facial recognition, sound/location recognition, Ai behavior and so on. Expect a lot more photos and videos of Maya as I continue to interact with her.

Just uploaded Maya's first full dance - "Tell Me" by the Wonder Girls.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PDVlKDh1xeE
IMO, the dance is pretty repetitive...not the best one really.
-
Splendid video! Maya is quite a beaut! She has very fluid movements. Thanks for posting!
-
Nice videos :) I'd love to get one but wow $2200 for me (darn exchange rates)... I'd rather buy four more Pleo's and an extra battery for each of them :P
-
Yah, it's expensive...bought mine for about $1,700 (with shipping).
One funny thing that happened during the filming of Maya's dance video is that she ran out of power right at the end of the video during the 2nd camera shoot...she was exhausted after dancing so much!
-
Created a new more generic promo video for the Genibo-QD showing off Maya's playful side! Check it out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUEVJrAlRuQ

Just finished a proper photoshoot for Maya:

Very nice pictures, I thoroughly enjoyed watching them...
-
She sounds grate.
Way way out of my price league though.
If I had that kind of money I’d prob be buying the robotic lawn mower first? The garden could really do with it. lol.
One thing that confuses me. Though, why do they come with a spare tail? Louise
-
The spare tail is a different color, and as far as I can tell the tail can't break off (made out of rubber), so looks like it was included to give you another color option.

The proffesionalism of your videos are stunning.
You have some serious hardware and editting skills.
I hope you showed this to Dasatech... they might hire you for becoming their Genibo PR person! ;D
-
Hi Darkwolf - thank you for the complement! I've not heard personally from them yet about my videos, but I'm pretty sure they have viewed some of them.
I've been doing video production for about 10 years now and I am fortunate to own my own equipment to make productions such as these - expect a lot more to come!

I like the programming and the robotics from the Genibo. But dang, (when I first read about it) I hate the over pricing. I really doubt I'll ever buy expensive, future robots that only the rich can afford.

I believe medusabeck just said something along the lines of Genibo being a really good price over at www.theelectrozone.com. If the place it legit, they have black and white for only $1,040.

Cool video dude! :)
-
As cute as Gneibos are, I still prefer pleos. :P I'm not really crazy about genibos or aibos. They're just plastic dogs that don't really possess the feeling and emotion that pleos do.
Apologies if this is offensive, but I have a little thing called 'opinion' and it's beginning to prick at me whenever I see how much people fawn over these things. :-\
-
Those are great videos =D they really show off what Genibo can do. Id love to buy a Genibo or Aibo but both seem to be difficult to find in the UK ^^;
-
Here is a quick video I did of my Genibo, Kiwi. It shows more of her autonomous personality. The videos of Maya are great :) Amazing quality!

I heard that "Star-Robots" sell Genibo but their website seems to be dead and I cant find any trace of them online :/ anyone know what happened to them?
-
Star-robots was owned by x-do and x-wolf who fix Aibos for the Aibo-life community. They have not been repairing Aibos lately and from what I have heard they also stopped selling Genibos since there are so many other distributors in Europe already.

Thats a shame because there aren't any distributors within the UK or repair specialists (to my knowledge).
-
Yes. I'm not saying this is true of all robotics companies but once you're past the lovely warranty period, you're pretty much on your own.
Talon
-
Yeah and the warranty of Genibo is only 6 months which really surprised me. I figured a robot that has such a hefty price tag would have at least a year. Aldebaran guarantees their Nao H25 for two years and provides service for after the warranty period too.
-
Wow... only 6 months? :( I would have thought it would be at least a year (given the price).
I really like the look of Genibo, and the videos are very encouraging but the company (Dasrobot?) seems to be a bit silent lately in regards to support/updates etc with the Genibo. Obviously Genibo and Aibo are completely different but anyone reading who has experience with both robots -- can you recommend Genibo? Aibo is older tech but seems to have more 3rd party/community support than Genibo ^^; and its obviously easier to find Aibo pre-owned than Genibo. Im just not sure if I want to invest that much in something that seems so vague (as new anyway).
-
I have Aibos and a Genibo. I like both, but Genibo has nowhere near the AI and personality that the Aibos do (or the Pleo RB). If you were only getting one, as things are at the moment I'd get an Aibo. And hope there will be some advancement in the Genibo AI in the future, and more community and support. :)
-
Well... this is what Dongbu has to say from my email correspondent with them :
Dear Alan,
Sorry for my confusing. I may need more coffee..
We can feel how you feel a thirst on manufacturer’s active feedback upon customer’s request.
Though we have some restriction due to a lot of R&D project (for other products), we will try to gain open API & SDK and develop more friendly software in future.
Let me ask your opinion if we need any input from the market during the development.
Please understand that we are not in position to guarantee some time frame when we can complete your request, but we will do that step by step.
Thank you for your keen interest in Genibo again.
Keep in touch!

Subject: Re: Old stocks of Genibo QD
Hi Daniel,
Errr I'm not a reseller… I'm a consumer, who is also in a few groups of Aibo owners community who have been searching high and low on more information regarding the Genibo (as it is seen as the spiritual successor to Aibo after Sony killed Aibo back in 2006).
I understand Mr Han is to your distributer for the Genibo SD in Malaysia.
I received your responds regarding the features that the community requested from Mr Han as well.
We, the community who are made up of the general consumer group (does nothing but just use), to enthusiast (likes making new skits/movements), to the hardcore robotics (likes diving deep and create all new AI/personalities) have a common question asked, which was also directed to Dasarobot back then:
1. Will Dasarobot, now Dongbu, fully release international versions of the SDK so that we the community can create new software and AI for Genibo (QD or SD doesn't not matter).
2. Will Dasarobot, now Dongbu, allow for us to hack into the Genibo to further enhance the robot? (this was the case for Aibo ERS-110 till ERS-2x0 series and it made the demand for Aibo so much more attractive if not for the crazy prices).
One reason why I asked about the QD is because it is an older model and that if there are, can we purchase them of Dongbu and then Hack into the Robot to create new AI systems? There are many QD owners who were unhappy with the performance of the QD and the lack of support from Dasarobot back then. Many hope that Dongbu will be better especially in support. They are willing to support the company, but in return they need to know they will not be left hanging.
regards,
Alan
