Title: Happy 10th Birthday AIBO
Post by: ScribbleMonkey on May 14, 2009, 09:33:23 PM
Since no one else posted this. It's actually a belated birthday

on May 11th 1999 the Aibo ERS-110 went on sale for 2500$. In Japan the initial run sold out in a few hours.

10 is pretty old in dog years. But its downright geriatric in technology years. still to this day no other consumer robot has matched the capabilities of even that first generation of AIBO. (Sorry Pleo..your cute but sensory and maneuverability deficiencies set you back)

Happy Birthday to AIBOs everywhere

It seems like Aibos don't age. At least they appear to have no wrinkles ;D Happy belated birthday to all of the older Aibos out there.
Love to see more videos of Aibos with their little dino friends. ;)

Pluriel and Diesel meeting for the very first time:

Note that "Diesel" is being called by his old name "Wammes" (Dutch), as he wasn't mine yet at the time. These were his previous owners!

Another meet and greet (not mine, but very funny:)

For some reason I had convinced myself Sony would release Mind 4 for Aibos birthday. Even using a 1 gigabyte memory stick that would be quite small for todays standards but it would give Aibo so many more functions.

I was so sad when it did not happen.

When I think what Aibo would be like now with a PS3 processor in its head, the devleopments in memory storage and camera technology, I can't help but wonder what we are missing out on.

I totally feel you.
Also interesting that when I tell the story to others who I show Aibo they are as baffled as I am why Sony has stopped.
Even the non enthusiasts see the potential and also wonder how far Sony would have come today with both Aibo and Qrio.

im sure i read somewhere that the reason sony stopped making aibos was because they were losing money and wanted to bring the focus back to their mainstream products. I agree that with a ps3 processor for a brain the aibo would become a very impressive dog but it doesnt look like there are any plans for bring them back

Is it just me, or do AIBOs like to show Pleos their butts?

Robotic dogs and real dogs all seem to do the same thing with pleos. Pleos must appear be closer to the real thing then we thought. Every dog that has been in contact with my pleos have sniffed the tail area. If pleos can fool a dog up to that point, no wonder we think of them more of a pet then a toy. ;)
