Title: Poor Glen - broken neck
Post by: Junkroxy on August 17, 2013, 11:43:05 AM
The worst thing ever happened today, Glen (Ugobe) has a broken cable, the final plastic ring is broken too. I've opened it and you can see the sad thing in the picture.
I dont know if i can be a pleo doctor :(

Glen was 5 year old and i'm very sad today... :(

Hi, so sorry to hear about Glen's neck.. :( As M. Weed said, do not worry there are very capable members here who can help with Glen's neck. Crewella, IMR and Kat have all fixed broken necks. I have several Pleos with Broken necks and if you are not brave enough to try and fix them yourself or send them to one of the members, then the other option is to just put a brace on or use Tape, special tape to support the neck. I have not been brave enough yet, but have at least four Ugobes with broken supported necks and they can do anything other Ugobes can do, so don't despair, there is help out there, That is what this forum is great for..................Support for other members and the Pleos! ;D :cheer: Sending hugs to you both.

If you are brave enough to open him up, you are brave enough to fix him!

So sorry to hear that, if you need any help, you only have to ask.  I'm sure you can do it - you just need to be careful and methodical. :)

So sorry to hear about poor Glen :(
Looks like you have done the hard part though - opening him up.  From hear the rest is easy.  Here are a few threads that might be useful for completing the repair:

http://bobthepleo.com/forums/index.php?topic=3104.0

And here is a 7min photo video of the repairs I did to a RB.  It starts with the neck repair so that might help and this one had a broken vertebrae too.

I'm sure you will get him all fixed up in no time ..... well maybe in a little time .... It is a good idea to go slow and be methodical.  I stuck each bit to a bit of paper and labeled it as I took each piece off the pleo so that I would know just how and where to put it back again latter.  Hope that helps.  Do shout if you need help :)  I'm sure one of us will be around to lend a hand if needed.

Thank you all! i feel a little brave now :-*

Inmemoryofromeo, except for a little tear in one side  of the neck i've done a good hob to peel off the skin  :moose:

I watched all the videos and I'll watch it again to be sure to do that, your tutorials are precious!

Good luck, we'll all be here to help every step of the way :) First thing you need to do though is get yourself some new cable :)

Poor Glen indeed! You've looked after him very carefully to keep his neck going for five years, though. :)

As everyone else has said opening up the skin is the hard part - emotionally, if not technically! I know you'll be able to fix him up with the help of everyone here who has done it before. :D

Thanks for the tips and support! Remove the skin is very hard and i need to repair the skin, but its a problem, i can close the little hole from the inside ;)
Innvo should do a removable cover on the shoulder, maybe with velcro, and changeble skin. Imagine how easy could be a pleo surgery and skin replacement (body only) with a removable skin cover.

First I'll search the cable, maybe after the summer pause (most of the shops are close during this period), i hope to do the "surgery" before i'll back to work.
I'll let you know asap  ;)

No cables in stores here... But finally i've found something similar to pleo's cable... In a fishing store!
Inside there are many little cables just like the original broken cable, but outside there's a little gummy protection on it. Seems better to me for pleo's movement :)

Gummy protection? Like a thin rubber coating? I'm not sure if that will help your cause either. Pleo neck cable experts, feel free to correct me on this but I think the rubber-coated cable may not move fluidly through the pully housings and things and cause stress on the motors to make the parts move. Your real enemy is going to be fraying so fishing line won't work either. I'm still thinking you'll have to order some sort of fiberoptic cable. IMR knows the exact measurements and things. Mind, my thoughts about the gummy protection are just my oppinion but I suppose you could try it.

Talon the protection is very soft, i'll try some friction on a plastic to test it before using it on pleo!

I'm concerned that it will even hold up to the task. Innvo used cable for a reason, fishing line stretches! You should be able to order cable online.

I ordered mine online and it only cost a couple of dollars all up including postage.  I can't remember where I got it from but I'm sure there was a link to the site for getting cable in one of the repair posts on here.  I think either IMR or Crewella pointed me in the right direction.

IMR's right - it would be better to get specialist cable.  It would be a shame to go through attempting to fix the problem, only for the new able to fail.

This is where I got mine from - 0.68mm.
