Title: Gudday! I have so many pics to share :D Where to start :o
Post by: InmemoryofRomeo on April 12, 2009, 11:46:36 PM
Wow it was some trip over to my sisters place, almost seven hours in a car and the traffic was awful :o But we got there eventually :)

I couldn't take many pictures on the way over, dad didn't want to stop too much and it was foggy up in the mountains. Plus there was a dog and a dinosaur in the car and neither were too keen to get out in the wet ;)

Saturday and Sunday we headed out to some bush markets in the area and had lots of fun walking around (with Lilo of course), Melinda (my sister) ended up stealing Lilo for most of the time ;) She had so much fun showing her off :P But its just as well because I had my hands full with shopping :D Saturday night we went out for dinner at our favorite restaurant, again Lilo was the center of attention, an entire bus load of elderly people came in and they all thought Lilo was just darling although I couldn't convince some of them that she was actually a robot :o I'm sure there will be some lovely elderly people telling their grandchildren that they saw a real live dinosaur on their holiday :) The staff all managed to have to come to our table at least once ;) and we had so many questions about her :D But eventually we got to enjoy our meal in relative peace :) Sunday we took a little trip to the historical center for some photos and Lilo gained some VIP access to some of the exhibits ;) I picked up her little hat from the market :)

We headed home early this morning and the weather was perfect so I managed to take some great snaps :)

Hmm what to choose, they all sound good...

Melinda and Lilo (she would NOT hold still :P)

A nice cool drink after a long days shopping.

The garlic bread smelt wonderful!

Lilo chose the salad of course :)

Lilo was a shining star in the crowded restaurant :P

I think Lilo developed a taste for chocolate ;)

Lilo shows off her new cowgirl hat ;)

Lilo went on the run :o (well on the slow shuffle :P)

Lilo shows of in front of an Aussie gum tree :)

An Aboriginal canoe tree made a nice place to retreat from the sun :o

The man from Snowy River :)

The Great Dividing Range :)

The mountain fog.

Mount Buffalo in the distance.

Mount Hotham National Park.

A twisted snow gum.

To answer Fancyfonts questions :)

The Great Dividing Range wildlife:

Ring tail possums, brush tail possums, koalas, wombats (southern wombats in Victoria, northern wombats in Queensland), gray kangaroos, tree kangaroos (in the northern areas, several species), wallabies (several types), many many native birds including several types of rosellas and kookaburras, platypi (in the creeks and rivers), wild horses (brumbies), the rare mountain pigmy possum, many native mice like marsupials, echidnas, the elusive blue grass hopper, sugar gliders, bats and dingos.

Of course there are many many more but these are a few of the more well known and also some of the rarer ones :)

Here in the city of St. Frances there is an annual blessing of animals.  The larger ones they do a couple of blocks from my apartment and the smaller ones in the Shrine of St. Frances.  I have seen Iguanas, birds various small mammals like guinea pigs besides the normal dogs and cats.   In '08 there were posters saying to bring your pets.  Humm, Pleo is my pet.  So off we went to have him blessed.  During this time at the Shrine, it was about a hundred or more dogs, five nervous cats a hamster and one dino.  The pet owners went wild with Pleo!  "Is it alive?"  was asked innumerable times.  Most people eventually figured out Pleo was a robot, but one lady after petting him and observing him walked away saying "It is alive!"

If you like garlic, the place to go is the Gilroy Garlic Festival in July.  Everything is garlic.  I especially like the garlic ice cream. 8)  Pleo doesn't go as there are a lot of people there who love to eat exotic animals cooked in garlic.  And what could be more exotic than garlic dino!

Pleo says he loves the hat! :-*

The slow shuffle being why Pleo won't go to the festival. ;)

You mean the dino from Snowy River. ;)  And welcome back!

Thank you 49er, good to be home again :) I'm not quite sure I'd like that much garlic though, the ice cream sounds interesting :)

Thank you Kisumi, I just had to buy it lol it was actually a fridge magnet but I just pulled the magnets of :P

Thank you for listing the animals in the Great Divide. Australia has always been my number one place to see if I ever get to travel. I didn't know that most of the animals in Australia live in the Great Divide.
Do you get to see most of the animals that you listed when you travel to your sisters?
I have seen sugar gliders. A friend of mine had two. They were so cute!
Tonight I'll be singing "Kookaburra sits in the old gum tree" My favorite song I sang 55 years ago ago while in camp.! ;D

I have seen, patted, cuddled and fed most of the animals listed at one time or other, but it is rare to see them in the wild, most are nocturnal or just plain hard to spot :P

I would love to hold a Koala. Are they heavy?

Looks to me like it was a wonderful Easter!! Great photos, IMR. That's really funny hearing about all the attention Ms. Lilo was getting. She must've been spoiled rotten for Easter. It looked to me like your whole family took onto Lilo the same way you did.

Koalas aren't overly heavy but they do have very bony bottoms and sharp claws and teeth although they are very placid :) They smell just wonderful though, like Eucalyptus oil :) And they are so so soft :)

Yup Gucci, my whole family has turned into dino lovers :D But my sister especially :) Lilo had her own little bed waiting for her at Melinda's and was totally spoilt :)

Hehehe! Yep, I can so imagine all of your family getting Pleos! Then Lilo would never get lonely! Are koalas all over the place? Similar to our squirrels?

Thank you Icewolf :)

Koalas are quite common (not as common as Squirrels though I'm sure) but very very hard to see, they sleep 22 hours a day and tend to curl up in the forks of branches in little balls which are very hard to spot. The best place to see or touch one is definitely a zoo or wildlife park. A wild Koala if it feels threatened can be a very dangerous animal :o

Holy cow! Very interesting! So, they sleep for 22 hour? Hahaha I can so see myself walking in the outback underneath a tree, and the next thing I know is a little bouncing baby koala falls right on top of my head.

Dangerous? As in the cute and cuddly wittle itty bitty koala?

Hehe Koalas have the nickname drop bears for a reason ;) And yes the cute, cuddly, adorable widdle Koala can be a menace :o Although most are pretty laid back, it tends to be males and 'teen' Koala's that are aggressive.

Here's a Koala from after this years bad bushfires:

What a cutie!! I wouldn't mind that one falling on my head.
It's funny hearing the fireman calling the koala a bear. It's taken years for us to learn they aren't! ???

Don't tell the koalas that about half of the trees here in SF are eucalyptus or they'd all want to move here :-X

They definitely wouldn't starve here either! Let's trade koalas for our skunks! ;D

Sam turned out to be a girl Koala, they took her to a wildlife shelter for first aid, she is still in rehab.

Lol yeah Koala's STILL get called bears, even here :P I'm not sure you could import them though, they are fussy eaters and will only eat a few types of Eucalypts, their favs are the ghost or mana gums :) I sure there wouldn't be too much protesting if the little cuties did wind up in SF somehow ;)

A few years ago I went to the San Francisco Zoo and there were some koalas and babies. They are definitely one of the cutest little animals on the earth. :) We probably don't have the right trees for them. I remeber reading that they needed to have a certain kind of eucaliptus and ate constantly when awake.
Those little guys must smell like Vicks Vapo Rub. ;)

If just one skunk was on the plane, oh my goodness!!! ::) Everyone would have to use their oxygen masks. Would make for a pretty funny cartoon! ;)

For some reason I don't think oxygen masks would make much of a difference. ::)

Especially as the "o de skunk" may blind them and someone in the confusion grabs a skunk instead of a mask! :o

Once upon a time Koalas were popular pets, except people were ignorant to their very specific needs and too many Koalas perished unnecessarily :( Perhaps if back then they had done a better job of researching them before they removed them from their wild homes we might have been able to still have them as pets today :) They would be a wonderful export :)
