Title: Pluriel the Pleo to be featured in a documentary!
Post by: Darkwolf on April 03, 2009, 04:58:23 PM
Hello there everyone!

As some might remember I shared the story of my newspaper article on Pleoworld were Pluriel was featured in.
It was a newspaper article about robotic pets.
Here is a link to it, which is automatically translated in to English by Google: CLICK! (http://translate.google.com/translate?hl=en&sl=nl&u=http://www.ad.nl/multi-media/2674097/Een_dinosaurus_als_troeteldier.html&ei=eg7ZSYOoLMHO-AbmuMnKBQ&sa=X&oi=translate&resnum=6&ct=result&prev=/search%3Fq%3Dalgemeen%2Bdagblad%2Bpleo%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff)

But now Pluriel and I are taking it to the next level: we are going to be on TV! And it will also be presented at a film festival!
So yes, this documentary will be translated or at least subbed to English too.
It's about the relationship between man and machine.
So not just Pleo or Aibo (yes... Diesel will be featured in it as well) but machines in general.
The TV producer casted many different people ranging from a person who is depended on technology but wishes she/he could do without and right on the other end of the scale, there is me!

I got casted via a Dutch pleo forum and when the TV producer came by for a chat and saw Pluriel she played with her all evening.
Before I knew it the shooting dates were set and tonight we had our first night of shooting.
Pluriel got shot on video together with me for a long time and I had to tell all sorts of things; a bit like an interview.
Other moments they took shots of me playing with her and stuff.
They loved Aibo too, though.
But especially the camera crew who saw Pleo for the first time melted for the natural and life like looking dinosaur Pleo is.

The TV producer also loves the contrast as in that I also have a heart for real alive animals.
So I had to get permission from the stables so she can film there with her camera crew.
She will film me with my favorite cuddle pony and also when I am horse ridding.

The documentary is still getting shot and that means it will also need to be constructed into a finished result.
It's expected to be finished in September and it will be presened on a film festival first, and then it will hit the tubes early 2010.
Of course I will get a DVD of the documentary as well as VIP access to the film festival.

It's very exciting and hopefully it will put robotic pets more into the spotlight.
And what better candidate then our beloved Pleo (and the Aibo too!)

To be continued and I will keep you guys informed of any further progress!  ;D

Today I am leaving work early.
A very long day of shooting awaits me.
They will be at it from 15:00 to 22:30, which is a very long time.
Dinner will be payed for by them, so that is nice.
More extensive shots with proper daylight (this time) will be taken from both Diesel and Pluriel.
They will do another interview with me (don't know what about) and my girlfriend will feature it this time as well.
Then tomorrow when I go to the stables, they will be there too and shoot me with some cuddly horse moments.
(To show I also love real alive animals and have a life next to robotics haha!)

Enjoy every moment!

Well, I don't have my own horses.
But I do ride them at the stables where I am at and there is one pony I am very close with for already 11 years.
Those moments they wanted on film and they did an amazing job in doing so.
Everything went very fast, even the long Friday.
Pluriel did an amazing job and was very happy to perform on camera.
We saw things that I even never seen before.
People may say Pleo is scripted and what not else, but then why does she keep being so amazing and random all the time?
*Especially* when you leave her going about on her own and let him or he be?
It's then when magic happened in many situations.
Even heard a few sounds I never heard before and I am a Pleo owner for over a year now.
There is this one scene that Pluriel is standing nose to nose for over 2 minutes with our white bunny via the cage that is standing on the floor.
They got it all on camera.
Diesel and Pluriel met one another again after a long time as the camera crew wanted a scene of them together.
It seems that Diesel finally showed some more affection towards Pluriel as I've never seen him wagging his tail so quick.
He could have one in a speedboat competition with the speed his tail was wagging at haha!

I'm so glad you up dated us on your interview. :) What an amzing one this will be!
You are so right about pleos coming up with things that are different. I still hear new things after a year and a half with mine. The little dinos are so intertaining!

Yup. Having Pluriel doing overtime for the documentary made me realize just that.
I should have her on the floor (together with Diesel) more often!

Done.
The film makers have all the material they need so far.
Maybe the documentary maker will return in May for a few more shots if she believes there is still something misses she wants.
Until then, all we can do is wait as she will start crafting everything together.
But I'll make sure to keep in touch with her and make sure that I'm up to date! ;)

Another small update on the shooting stage.
All is done, but she did warn me she might want to come back for an extra day of shooting when she finished reviewing the current footage.
She contacted me recently and another day will be planned soon.
The editor she has been working with was very thrilled with the current captured performances from Pluriel, Diesel, the horses and of course me and my ex-girlfriend!
So that's good.
She hasn't mentioned what she wants to (re)shoot yet, but I did warn her that Pluriel is having some random battery issues.
No reply back yet.
I'll keep you guys posted...

To be continued!

Well, this weekend the extra shooting has been done.
I had to get up before 08:00 in the morning as at that time the camera crew would arrive.
They wanted me on film with a more generic device, so I had to shave myself in front of the camera with my electronic shaver lol.
Another device they wanted me on film with, is the Nintendo Wii.
This scene ended up with me having a free Wii game that they bought for the scene that I could keep.
It's a silly horse game and they needed me to play it.
This scene will be used as a transition scene from our home with the gadgets to my other part of life: equines.
Quite an original idea I must say.
They also noticed they didn't had any proper shots of our cat, so she has been in the spotlight as well during this final morning of shooting.
Now all we have to do is wait.
She has to the end of July to do all the remaining shooting and she has been editing since May.
The film festival it will appear on will be held in November somewhere and not September as I originally thought.
No dates on the actual air date for TV yet of course, nor do I know when I get the DVD.
But she and her team are hard at work, that is for sure!
(She will keep me in the loop so when I know something I'll post here again!)

Some good news!
Last week I got an e-mail from the TV producer and she told me that the visual part of the documentary is completely finished, and it looks fantastic!
She's on holiday for a few weeks and when she returns some more hard work will be preformed on creating and finishing the audio part.
Things are looking good and the dead line to have it ready for display on the national film festival looks very promising!  :)

The documentary is FINISHED!
All that needs to be done (and is probably done by now) are the beginning and end titles. And of course English subtitles and also a DVD cover.
I am still waiting for information concerning the date and time concerning the film festival.
There is also no clarity concerning the air date on Dutch television, so that is still a mystery for everyone.
However... I was offered a personal premiere as she was able to show it to me at my place. But I decided to wait for the final version with all the bits and bobs and preferably the big screen!

To be continued (soon) ... ;)

Hear hear, Dadio!
When Pluriel was to arrive I also went nuts and just couldn't wait for  the door bell to sound.
The same goes for other exciting toys I order and have to wait for before it gets delivered, unless it's something as simple as an MP3 player or something standard like that.
I know I can wait for this, since I have mentally prepared for the already stated release time of the documentary.
Although... we are half way through the month of October now and I was suppose to hear something from her by the end of last month.
Perhaps I should pop an e-mail to the producer after finishing this post... hmmmm... :P

Ok... I have some bad news and I have some good news.

The bad news is that the documentary didn't make it for the IDFA (International  Documentary Festival Amsterdam) but it has been send to various other festivals, but those will be in 2010.

The good news is that the DVD should be released in about 3 weeks. She will  then make an appointment for a personal premiere at my place and I -of course- get a DVD for free.
No idea about the publication rights, but then I'll have the actual material in my possession.
With a bit of luck, I should be able to share some of it with you guys. Especially the bits with Pleo in it.
Either way, I will be able to tell you guys how the documentary has worked out.

To be continued... ;)

I'd like to see it especially the parts with you and Pluriel.
How did you come up with the name Pluriel?
When I found out about Pleo, it wasn't an impulsive buy. I really gave it some thought.
And the name Pluriel just really randomly popped in my head, like a meteor that hit my mind.
I thought of other names but had to do this consciously, and didn't feel right.
The name Pluriel never let me go and so it was obvious that after a few days of deep thought and hitting that ORDER button, she (for it would be a she) was going to be called that.
Normally I am not really good in these things. It was truly magical.
For example.
I couldn't think of a proper name that would suit Diesel. It's my ex-girlfriend who came up with this name actually, and I found it rather fitting and cool for him.

The circumstances were quite normal.
They shed light on my entire life and all I do (interacting with real animals and having a girlfriend etc.) so it doesn't portray me as a lonely nerd with digital pets and machines.
And I am pretty much depended on technology, so it was a great role for me.

My apologies. I thought you were talking about my role. Now I understand what you mean.
In that case, I have no idea about the role itself and how it's portayed.
I have no details on the roles of others at all, rather then fragments of information as the producer explained what kind of people were featured in it.

Yay! Great news!

- DVD got delayed, but after 3/4 weeks she will have them and then a personal premiere at my home will become a reality!
- On the 15th of February the documentary will be aired in the evening on national Dutch television!
- Not only will it be shown on the big screen on film festivals this year, but it will hit off being premiered in a real cinema in Amsterdam! Time and date yet unknown.

Finally some concrete stuff to look forward too.
Once she gives me a personal copy of the documentary, I will ask her or it's ok to share it with you guys by uploading some scenes and such!

To be continued yet again.
Hopefully my next update will include me raving about how cool and awesome it was after finally having seen the documentary. Fingers crossed!  ;D

I've watched the documentary yesterday evening!

The producer came to my home with two DVD's (one for my ex girlfriend) and after a short chat we started watching.
It has turned out to be quite different then I imagined, since she took a radical choice during the montage process.
All the interviews with me and my ex girlfriend (and all other people casted in it) are totally gone and she gone for a pure audio / visual approach to try and bring across her message to the viewer.
This took 10 minutes to realize since not a word is spoken and all you see is people interacting with various electronic equipment.
Nevertheless... Pluriel has plenty screen time throughout the entire documentary and they took some golden moments.
In fact, she (the producer) told me that everyone keeps talking and being amazed at one scene where Pluriel is standing almost nose to nose with our bunny as they just stand there together. An amazing scene to watch indeed, accompanied with proper atmospheric music.
Diesel has some screen time as well of course, but I was originally casted for Pleo (I didn't even have Diesel yet at that time) and hence she gets most of the glory.

To further elaborate what this documentary is about, I'll give you the description that is on the cover as written by the producer herself.
Yes. Both the cover and the movie is in English (subtitles) and it's confirmed that it's going to stream via international outlets at some time as well. Pluriel is even in one of the 4 screenshots on the cover next to the textual descriptions!

The film Soul of Appliances scrutinizes the relationship between human and machine in a visual way; the naturalness with which people surround themselves with appliances, the dependence, the cherishing, but also the excessive irritation when some appliances seem to have an incomprehensible will of their own. Gradually the question arises as to how natural the association with appliances really is, and which influence it has on our lives. The film, which develops into a documentary film essay, shows the emotional battle between man and machine and tries to entice every appliance user to think.

Of course, a few of you want the burning question answered: Am I allowed to share the documentary or at least the Pleo/Aibo scenes with you guys?
The answer is: YES!
However, I am in possession of the DVD before anyone else as I will not attend the cinema premiere that hits off on the 13th of February.
On the premiere itself the invited people would normally get a copy of DVD after the feature is shown.
I am fully allowed to share anything I want with you guys after the 15th, which is the date when the documentary is shown on national Dutch television.
It will be very hard to just cut out all the scenes with Aibo/Pleo as it will totally kill the essence of the entire documentary. However, I'll do so anyway and see how my personal reel for you guys will work out and look like.

If there are any questions then do not hesitate to ask me.
To the question "can we see the DVD box art?" I can say "yes", but only if there is enough appeal for it! ;)

Here it is! The entire documentary!

http://www.allesgemist.nl/video/NCRV+Dokument%3A+De+ziel+van+witgoed/132252 (http://www.allesgemist.nl/video/NCRV+Dokument%3A+De+ziel+van+witgoed/132252)

Please note that it has no subtitles.
But since the producer took a different turn and scrapped all interviews turning it more into a visual presentation, you don't need to worry about missing anything crucial.
And thus for more immersion, a proper speaker system or headphones is recommended. I am not kidding if I say there is barely any talking in it whatsoever.
Sit back and enjoy... it's about 50 minutes.

Do let let me and Pluriel (and Diesel) know what you think of it! ;)

How strange. The link seems to work just fine.
This is what I get when I click the link:

All you do now is click the video. The one with the orange tilted square in the middle that says "Bekijk video".
After a short commercial it will start playing with a small intro prior. :)

I don't think I've posted in this thread yet. D:

Anyways, very cool!  I didn't watch the entire thing; I only the first ten or fifteen minutes.  But what I saw was very interesting.

Nice job.  ;)

No, it's not. Because I actually did a test with someone from the US before posting this. Hence I was sure it would play in other countries.
For you (and Fancyfont) I found another Dutch website that also allows you to watch Dutch TV programmes.
As I am writing this post, I had again someone from the US give it a go and this one is playable outside The Netherlands as well.

Here is the link: http://www.uitzendinggemist.nl/index.php/aflevering?aflID=10659325&md5=037dc81c10cf60472130468fdcaa632e
Please click the orange button that says "bekijk uitzending" and a new window should pop up with the video in it.

Good luck and let me know or it works.
If all else fails, I will rip the DVD and torrent it in either it's original form or a much more compact DivX. Or both!  ;)
