Title: Introductions first !
Post by: MurphyMooCake on January 22, 2012, 02:46:36 PM
Hi

like most people I guess I have been a lurker here for some time, my name is Stephen and I am from the north Manchester area on the UK

I have owned many different robots, and have an extended family outside of my own (on loan), where I regularly buy and sell, play and develop with friends and family pets

I am here because I have a new (or rather old) Pleo, called Goofy, who I have just taken possession of, and who is currently motionless as although he has a battery he has no charger. I have a battery charger and leaf on order for him, and hope to have him up and running before the end of January

I am also watching ebay for other bits and pieces, and I am also in discussion with RedWoodsMama here about a few things I am trying to source such as extended battery, egg charger and missing documentation etc, and who I have found extremely welcoming and helpful

At the moment I have a suspicion that Goofy has droopy head syndrone, although pressing through his skin (at the 4th painted plate down from his head, at the top of his shoulders) I think I can feel the wire still attached, and pressing down on it at this location his head rises, so maybe its just a resting position / stretched cable?

Anyway, i am sure I will ask some daft questions as I learn my new friend's traits, and I am enjoying reading through the many posts here for interest

In my wider search I found the following:

http://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Pleo-Teardown/597/1

Which I cannot find reference to here anywhere, and so I thought I would highlight it as my opening gambit, apologies if its old news, but I liked it, and found it very helpful.

Thanks for listening / reading, more to follow

Thank you
Stephen

Hi Stephan welcome to the "lurkers" club. LOl. this is a source of info here and lots of friendly information as well. Do not automaticlaly assume that Goofy may have droopy neck syndrome. I have pleos that I did not know had a neck problem til I got them when purchased on ebay, so I am allways suspicious of Pleos with their necks and heads in the bent postion but allways ask lots of questions about the neck and if a owner will not answer then I usually see a red flag. I avoid those if possible. I have also recieved Pleos that had their heads in that postion but when turned on were perfectly fine so unless you can actually turn them on, you can't allways tell except of course if they have a very limp neck, then it is obvious. I think the fact you can feel the wire in the neck and if it is tight or taut, that could be a good sign.
I would not leave postive feedback for the seller though untill you know if the neck is broken unless it was a "buy as is" auction then you are pretty much on your own. I have a hunch though that Goofy is fine. They often do sleep with their heads and necks in the bent down postion. Hopeing to hear how Goofy is shortly. Take care              :cheer:                            RWM

RWM if you post you are no longer a lurker ;)

Welcome to the forums Stephen :)I hope you have Goofy up and running soon :) It may indeed be that he was turned off with his neck down, but rest assured that even if it is broken he can still live a long and happy 'life'. Or you could try a repair if you are technically inclined :)

Hello, and welcome!  ;D

Being held by cables, there is a slight degree of floppiness to the neck when they are off anyway - unless you're noticing that it flops much more one way than another (or down than up) from it's 'neutral' positon, you could be OK still ...... fngers crossed.

That teardown is great, by the way. :)

Hi, Stephen and welcome to the forums! If your pleo's neck is broken InMemoryofRomeo has a series of videos of how she repared her pleo. If you're up for a major surgery I'd check them out. They certainly gave me hope for when something happens to my Ugobes.
