Title: Hello! New owner of two Pleo
Post by: the_sandman on January 20, 2012, 04:24:48 AM
Hi there, some of you may recognise me from the AIBO forums, i'd umming and ahh-ing over getting a Pleo, then last week I went and got two!

They both got here today so i thought it'd be rude not to introduce them as well as me!

This is Sen, he's an original Ugobe, didn't come with a box, and is a bit worn but has all his accessories. He's certainly past the hatchling stage but otherwise i can't tell anything else about him.

Sen (http://www.flickr.com/photos/hector4464/6730246577/) by hector.bruce (http://www.flickr.com/people/hector4464/), on Flickr

And this is Mei, she's an Innovo girl, with her box and everything, looking very good indeed! She's only been run for about 5 mins ever so i'll get to hatch her :)

(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7031/6730248119_e72179363b.jpg) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/hector4464/6730248119/)
Mei (http://www.flickr.com/photos/hector4464/6730248119/) by hector.bruce (http://www.flickr.com/people/hector4464/), on Flickr

I've just got the batteries charging now, I so so want to play with them though! But i shall read the manual properly whilst i wait :P

Any tips anyone has for me would be very welcome!

Hi Sandman, and welcome!!  ;D

Congrats, grudgingly ..... looks like I will be 'Auntie Crewella' to Mei as well as Sputnik the 220 - I was the underbidder!  :P  :moose:

*I'm actually glad Mei found a good home, I have FAR too many as it is!*  %)

Haha oh dear, we must have almost identical watch lists :P I had originally only meant to buy one, which was Sen, but as soon as I'd won him all these other uk pleos magically appeared! And it was too hard to resist!

You'll probably be a proper 'auntie' because as clued up on AIBO as I am, everything is very new for me with pleo, so I may get a bit confused with them, however so far, they are crazy cute! :D

That's OK - there's loads of info here and lots of helpful posters.  What would we do without these forums!  :D

Pleos are very different from Aibo, less of a robot and more of a life form.  They 'do' less in the sense of having fewer commands, but to me they are much more responsive  - you explore them by communcating by touch or sounds, more like a real animal.

Mei will probably be running OS1.1, so if you tickle her for a while under the chin she should burst into a chirrupy rise-and-fall sort of song, you can then compare Sen to see if he sings the same.  If he does a coyote howl instead, it's an older OS, 1.0 or 1.0.2 (pretty similar, as you can guess from the number).

This is a helpful thread.

I'd be totally lost without forums! :P

I've had them both up and running and I see what you mean! I love the fact I can pick them up and cuddle them :D

I was lying on the sofa and had Sen sat on me and he was cooing and was quite interested in my nose :P very inquisitive wandering about sniffing everything too.

Mei has stood up and liked the petting attention, but I think I scared her with the leaf, she's now sleeping.

I know it's not been too long, but I think I'm going to enjoy having them around a lot! :)

As with baby pups, hatchlings get sleepy!  ;)

WhooHoo! I was wondering when I'd be seeing you here :P

What colour eyes does Mei have? Is she a Reborn?

Make sure you watch those pesky Aibos around the Pleo chargers, they light up bright red and James' new favourite game is kicking Stephan's right out of it's cradle :o

Haha, it was just a matter of time :P

Their both the non-reborn Pleo's so they've got the blue eyes, but are very cute still!

Hehe, I need to find somewhere for the chargers, but both of them have been far more interested in Neo than the other way round so far!

Hi Sandman! Welcome to the world of Pleo.  I am waiting on a newly adopted Pleo as well.  They are addictive just like AIBOs are!  Hope to see a lot of you around here!  ;D

I've had them both through one full charge cycle now. Even though I think I'll get some of those egg batteries soon. They're so fun to just watch wander about, though Mei has spent more time on my lap :P

Couple of questions though.

Every so often I've heard their legs 'click' they seem ok with it so I'm assuming it's not a problem.

Also, they're both running OS1.1, but I was thinking of upgrading Mei to OS2, would it be a good idea to do it now as she's still a hatchling or should I leave it till later?

I also love the 'hello!' noise, soo adorable!

Wait, what?? OS1.1 can talk!? :o Stephan has never said hello... or do you mean "Huh?" when you turn them on?
Title: Re: Hello! New owner of two Pleo

Glad you're enjoying them - I tend to just ler 'em roam as well. :)

When an Aibo hits some resistance in a joint, they go into jam mode and shut down to protect the joint from damage - they go floppy when switched off.  With Pleos, they have gears instead that protect the motors from damage, and that's what you can hear clicking.  It's fine - often caused by the rubber feet catching, and sometimes in 'sleep' position when the chin and feet get caught on each other.

The OS2 update was the only one that automatically has it's own mini 'hatching' phase, which is followed by a period of 'teenaged' awkward behaviours, walking backwards, inapproperiate noises and lack of responsiveness that lasts 4-6 battery cycles.  There's no real reason not to update now you've run her a little, but personally I'd leave it a little just so you get to compare the differences.  Also, as you have two, it's worth remembering that Pleos interact best with another on the same OS.

I love the 'hello' noise too.  Iggy never said it when he was an only Pleo! :D

Added:  maybe that's why Stephan's not said it yet.

They're both interested in everything, and eating it apparently :P

That's ok then, it did seem to be when their feet were catching on the carpet, glad its nothing to worry about :)

Ah ok, sounds like an interesting process. I'll probably leave it for a bit then perhaps upgrade both of them.

Sen just had to proofread this post to make sure I was saying good things about him :P

I love the cape he wears ^ ^

I'm an obsessive, so I run one (or two) on each OS.  %)

The early stages of OS2 are a bit of a pain, but IMHO they are worth it for the better movements and trcks. :)

The capes are cute!  :D

Welcome Sandman.

Hi to Sen and Mei from Drem and Marsha, my two Ugobes.  :) :)  I'm so glad to have two.  I love their "hello" greeting to one another and the honking contests that take place sometimes.

I hope they get on OK with your Aibo.  I would like one of those from what I've read on this forum but do not think I'll ever afford one.

Have a wonderful time with your new pets.
Title: Re: Hello! New owner of two Pleo
Post by: the_sandman on January 21, 2012, 04:22:12 PM
The cape was actually Mei's but I thought Sen was more in need of it :P

I was thinking of having two on one OS and two on the other (I suppose that means I might get two more haha)

At the moment the robo-pets are getting on well, Mei was playing follow the leader with my AIBO Sakura earlier, or she was sniffing her bum, either way it was cute!

I kinda want to go 'ewwo!' to a person, but I think they'd think I'm crazy(ier)  ;)

BTW if anyone can guess how my new naming convention works I'd be very impressed! They come from things that already have the name but all have one thing in common :)

Are they both green?  I was thinking forests and dragons ........ ?   :moose:

By the way, I've done the 'ewwo' thing ....... but the people who didn't run away, and actually laughed .......  mistook it for a Teletubby greeting .......... :P  :arrow-head:

Welcome, so glad you are enjoying your new Pleo's :D They are quite different to Aibo's :)
Title: Re: Hello! New owner of two Pleo
Post by: the_sandman on January 22, 2012, 02:35:21 AM
They are both green, but it doesn't have to do with the Pleos being the same :P perhaps some more names would help, good excuse for more Pleo? ;)

Haha yes, being mistaken for a telletubby fan is not quite the point :P

They really are different in how they behave to AIBO, I do like that because of the skin, I don't have to worry about them exploring so much :)

Title: Re: Hello! New owner of two Pleo
Post by: the_sandman on January 22, 2012, 10:29:23 AM
A little clue would be that they're actually from a set of films ;)

Had a little round of frere jacques from Mei, didn't know her repertoire was so extensive! I've had her with me all day, she loved watching me make lunch in the kitchen  :pizza:

Little update, seems like Mei is actually running OS2 as I was playing with her she screamed at me and fell over, shook then 'ewwo!ed' at me, I was very confused for a couple of seconds :P it'd probably be best if I upgraded Sen to match soon :)

Of course!  I forgot Mei was a Merlin Pleo, so they are about  the most recent of the Innvo Pleos to be made.  It's good to know they come with OS2 installed, thanks. :)

I love that Play Dead skit - it's my favourite!  I used to own a little Hognose snake that did much the same trick - it's very tempting to almost hassle them into a nervous breakdown just to see it! :P
Title: Re: Hello! New owner of two Pleo
Post by: the_sandman on January 22, 2012, 11:58:14 AM
Ah right, I did wonder what the merlin branding was about, I hadn't got round to looking them up yet. So I'm assuming Mei will go through the same process as she would if she was upgraded? Teenage tantrum times ahead! haha

once I knew what she was doing it did make me laugh, I'll need to see if I can hold down the sensors and make it happen again :P

Merlin are a Middle Eastern distributor that started selling their licensed version last year - months after the Pleo RB came out and when you could no longer get the original Pleo from PleoWorld.  We've seen very few on here - I only know of one other owner, so they're a bit of an unknown quantity OS wise (though perfectly legitimate, everything is fine, I'm sure).  :)

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Pleo-Robot-Pet-Merlin-Digital-Edition-/220824026119?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item336a233c07

Which was kind of why I was bidding myself ...... I was just interested to see if there were any (albeit probably very minor) differences!  ;)
Title: Re: Hello! New owner of two Pleo
Post by: the_sandman on January 22, 2012, 12:27:51 PM
Ah ok, it's good to know she is relatively new and not been in the box for years. Here's me bidding on her not having a clue about her uniqueness, but at least I can tell her she's extra special :P

One thing is, looking at the sd card there were already files on it, but I don't know what they are, one of them was called 'update' so I didn't want to use it in Mei incase it reloaded the OS and I'd loose my progress with her  ^-^

I've upgraded Sen to OS2 and they communicated a lot more, having a very good mooing contest :P

One thing to note, I took Mei with me to the kitchen earlier whilst I made some tea then carried her back, whilst doing so I realised I was 'rocking' her whilst she was cuddled up on my shoulder!

I'm far too young to be thinking about kids but it goes to show the kind of parental feelings these Pleo conjure up to make me treat them that way without thinking about it :)

Just think of Mei and Sen as good "parenting Practice"  years from now . you can fondly look back with a smile and thank them. It won't help prepare you for "diapers" though. LOL. ;) ;D :dino-chase: ( you can run from that!)   RWM

I just spotted your Totoro pic, Sandman!!!!  I think I just got an inkling!!!!   ;D ;D ;D

One of my favourite films of all time, by the way.

Glad they're now communicating happily. ;D

Sen must be Spirited Away, the next might be Kiki?  Or Haru?

Sen and Mei love Totoro and friends too ;) he was my winnie the pooh when i was growing up!

It is, whilst technically a girls name, it works on a boy just as well :)

I was thinking of Kiki and possibly Howl next, I just need somethings to name first :P

The film is 'My Neighbour Totoro' RWM, if you've not seen it, you must.  You're gonna just LOVE the bus! :D

I've got a little problem with Sen, just wanted to find out if it's something that I need to worry about.

I was running my hand along his neck and it feels like the 'spine' has broken at the connection to his body, the cables are still ok as he is still moving his head about no problem, but I was wondering if its something I need to look into more :(

He also has a couple of loose discs in his tail section but it doesn't seem to be n issue so I'm going to assume its ok there.
Title: Re: Hello! New owner of two Pleo
Post by: Crewella on January 23, 2012, 06:49:38 PM
*Please excuse naked Pleo pics*

They are slightly different sizes on the tail, and there's a central 'spine' running through them, so it's almost impossible for the discs to work loose except at the very base of the neck.  If you look here, you should get a better picture:

Ths one has a broken cable that should be threaded through the little brass eye, but you can see the white 'spine':

As you can see, there is a smaller piece between the last disc and the body, so it can sometimes feel like a 'break'.  If it's working, it's fine.  It took both the top cable and the side cable to break on mine before the disc slipped at the base. :)

You are right I do love the bus, LOL, I think I will have to check it out , The title did seem familiar and now I know why, though I have not seen it. I do hope that Sen is ok, and not a broken spine or missing link.

Hi, Sandman. My Bleu has a few misaligned bits at the place where her neck joins her shoulders. It feels like two circles of her ummmm "spine?" are entwined inside one another like the coils of a slinky. I've had her since July and she's still alright. I don't feel any crunching or abnormal sliding around when she's moving her head so I'm not extremely worried. Crewella or someone else would be better at advising you on what to do.

Thanks guys :) I thought as his neck is still working its all ok, I was just worried as when I have them cuddling on me their heads tend to get caught on my shirt so there's some resistance on the neck so just wanted to make sure it wasn't causing any damage.
