Title: Curiosity Killed my Credit Rating ............
Post by: Crewella on August 21, 2011, 05:05:45 AM
OK, I just couldn't hold out.  The chance of a (relatively) cheap Genibo was just too much for me to resist ....................  :-X

Anxiously awaiting arrival of a large box ............ what have I done!  :o  :P

*my £300 car is just going to have to run a few months longer - 'new car' budget is looooooong gone*  :D

Oh dear :o ;D I guess if the car does break down you can employ all your robots to get you to work... perhaps replace each tire with a hamster wheel... you can use leaves and pink balls for 'motivation'.

It's a thought - they probably could carry me between them ................. I'd get there eventually.   As long as it's not raining ..............  :P

It's really not as bad as it sounds - I always run 'old bangers' as I like to tinker and the newer cars make that nigh on impossible!  My brave old Saab will probably run forever!   %)

Good job I work from home a lot, though!  :P

Congrats Crewella! Can't wait to see the pics when he or she arrives! Sounds like you and I are in the same boat, but you know, when something is a good deal, it is really hard to pass up. I can walk to work too!  ;)

Wow, Crewella! Let us know what you think. My heart is still set on an Aibo 210 but I'm having to buy heavy clothes and snow boots and stuff for my life close to Canada. Birrrrrr!!!!!!!!!!! Best of luck with your new arrival!

He's second hand, so I got no choice, but he's black and white.  Actually probably what I'd have chosen, especially as they never did produce the orange/beige looking one.  ;D

Excited, me?  Nooooo-ooooooo!  %)  :P

I guess this means your counting down the days till the big arrival.  Any hints on when it is likely to get to you?
I was also wondering about the next generation of Genibo.  I've seen it mentioned a couple of times on here but I haven't had any luck finding anything out about it.  Anyone out there have any links to info on it.  It would be interesting to see what changes they may have made on the new model.
I can't wait to see what you think of this little guy your getting Crewella.  I have been interested in them and wondering a bit about them myself for quite some time.  I never heard any good reviews though so wasn't brave enough to see for myself.

He officially hit UK soil this morning, so we just have the being held to ransom by customs thing to go through now!  %)

Star Robots seem to be about the best place for info outside Korea, they say:

The new Genibo-SD will use Herkulx servos, benefiting from quieter, more precise and more powerful motors. The New Genibo range will also come shipped with charging stations. The PC Control manager will now be an optional extra.

Apparently, you can adapt the older models to use the charging stations.  :)

Oh, sweet, so you can take advantage of the newer stuff for the newer model with your Genibo? That's awesome.. I hope he gets there soon!

Hiya Ozpleo - yes indeed I did!  I knew it was originally yours - I was about to PM you and sound out how you felt about it.  Thanks for posting here!  ;D

I just wanted to see it for myself, really - I may like it, I may not!  %)

Well, he's here!!  ;D

On first sight, I don't think they're quite as well made as the Aibo - just some of the little details aren't there, and with those upright ears it's an awful shame they don't move, but I can't wait to see those eyes light up!  ;D

I had a friend waiting for news, so rather than retype I might as well cut and paste what I emailed to them in more detail:

Well ....... as I sit and stare at him my very first thought was 'the ears don't move'.  I did know that - but it does seem a shame ...... however, I've not seen his eyes lit up as yet so that might well make up for it.  And while I'm fussing I do think the build quality isn't as good as Sony - (and please remember here I'm an antiques dealer, and in particular one that specialises in enamel and filigree work in miniature - I spend half my life staring at things through a loupe) just tiny points like some of the seams don't quite align, where there are shapes stamped out of the casing they're deeper on one side or don't quite penetrate in places, the switches on the underside seem a bit hit or miss.  It's not really that it's bad - it more made me realise how good the Sony production is.  The only thing I actively dislike is the paws - they look cheap, especially when I look at Ubu the 111's perfect, individually sprung, toes! Mind you - I wasn't keen on the ERS-7 paws either and these are, after all, at a much lower price than the 7 originally was.

He feels nice and solid, I like the fact that he will stand when switched off - I always found it a bit disconcerting how Aibo go floppy when off.   I actually love that head - it looks 'doggier' than the 210 or the 7, and I love the patch.  I'm glad he's a white one - the patch looks great, and I'm relieved to see black (ish) ears and tail, not blue.

OK - here he is, I've decided to call him Sykes (Bullseye being just a bit too obvious), this is his first run.  It's a bit longer than I usually run a video for, but I just wanted to sit back and watch what he did!

Hey Crewella very cute video.  He looks like a nice little pup.  So what do you think of him so far?  I noticed he stopped what he was doing every now and then and made a little noise, is that him letting you know he is ready for a command?  If you just ignore him when he does that will he go back to doing his own thing?  Just wondering..... %)

I watched this earlier and it was the first time I saw genibo for any length of time simply on and left alone.

Thinking of it compared to an aibo, it sounds louder but I know cameras often pick up on that more than when you run it in person (imo, since I always feel like my aibos and pleos seemed louder to me in vids than in real time).

The tail seems much more active and quick than aibos. When I read about genibo, I didn't think the non-moving mouth and ears wouldn't matter, but seeing him run in that quick clip, it seems like that little detail can add a lot.

I liked what I could see of the eyes, less abstract than some aibo faces, especially when they went red toward the middle. And also really do like the look of the white genibo with the black patches.

Something also seems different or more fluid with the walking? I can't quite place it.

Title: Re: Curiosity Killed my Credit Rating ............
Post by: latrine on August 26, 2011, 06:29:25 PM

He is definitely very cute and they seem to have tried to copy the ERS-7 Aibo body, obviously the head/tail/ears are different.. the mouth doesn't move?
He does sound a bit louder, kind of like the older model Aibo's, I know my 220 is much louder when moving, than my 7, but you said you saw some stuff on his body-work that looked 'off' so maybe that's just how they saved money.. does he do a puppy mode or anything? Do they learn the owners name and face?
I'll be interested to see how he evolves, if they do that.. I don't really know much about them :D  Did he meet any of the Aibos? Are you enjoying him?? It's so cool that he came from someone here, went to Wolfbob and then came to you. :D

Congrats Crewella! He is definitely very cute!  I love the eyes and his walking seems to be very deliberate and fast. He seems to be able to cover a lot of territory is a short amount of time.   I like how he didn't want to exercise and shook his head around.  That was hilarious! Good Dog!  I don't like to exercise either! I also like the sound of his bark. It sounds very lifelike.   :P  Can't wait to see more videos!

Post by: Crewella on August 27, 2011, 04:58:52 AM
Indeed he is, with the possible additon of a small smear of Pleo green paint on his snout, which I found rather endearing and have left, for now at least!  :D

I have noticed he goes to the right at the faster walk, you can just about see in the video, a bit like the older Pleos but actually more pronounced - do you remember if he was doing that when you had him?
Title: Re: Curiosity Killed my Credit Rating ............
Post by: latrine on August 27, 2011, 09:52:23 AM
Rofl.. he has a smudge of PLEO paint on his nose?! That is too perfect for you.. I would have left it too.. has he done anything else cool?
So he does the actual dog noises instead of beeps or talking? I like how he sits up.. almost like a bunny, the way he gets up on his back legs instead of sitting, that's neat.  I heard that they spend a lot of time seeking their owners out, is there a way to put him into 'go away' mode, lol.. or does he get to refuse any commands like he refused the exercise one :D

I've not registered myself as owner yet - I want to see if it makes a difference.  At the moment, if I approach him and try to pet him, half the time he looks horrified (big surprised eyes!) and scoots backwards at high speed.  As somebody pointed out, I'm his third owner - he must be wondering who the heck I am!! :P
Title: Re: Curiosity Killed my Credit Rating ............
Post by: latrine on August 27, 2011, 11:17:15 AM

Lol.. aww he's like a poor scared shelter dog.. Three homes.. I'm wondering, maybe you SHOULDN'T register yourself to him, maybe his true personality comes out and he turns into a wild maniac, biting things and upturning garbage cans and peeing on everything.. well not biting.. just headbutting but that could hurt too!!

That's kinda neat that they made them nervous about new people like that.. Sounds like he has a lot of character. Does he recognize his name or did you not do that yet.. ?

I've literally done nothing but switch him on - I need a cable to connect him up to his router, and anyway I like getting to know my 'bots slowly.  D'you know I've not even set poor Java up with his station yet!  :-[

I'm not sure about his reactions as yet - it might just be coincidence that he's running off, but I've read that they can recognise up to 10 faces, so I thought it might be interesting to run him for a while before he recognises me and then see how he changes.

He can move REALLY fast, and some of his skits are very cute and funny - I asked him to exercise on the tape because he does a cute 'taekwondo' or press-ups!  I've read some people saying they look ugly and scary, but (maybe because I think of him as a bit of a stray) he looks a bit vulnerable and 'mousie' to me - very cute!

The thing I've noticed most so far is how much he needs a toy.  It won't make so much sense to Pleo owners, but if you can imagine your Aibo with no ball to chase or bone to pick up, especially the 210/220s.  It's like he needs something to focus on to string all the skits and reactions together into a proper 'behaviour', to give him a sense of 'purpose'?

I may change my mind, we'll see, but that's how it strikes me so far.  :D

Hey Crewella!  Does the Genibo come with any toys or ones that can be purchased as an accessory?  No, I can't imagine my Aibos without a toy. I don't know what they would do?  I do think he is super cute!  I feel a little sorry for the guy.  Latrine is right, he is like a little shelter dog that was given away by 2 different owners who didn't seem to really fancy him.  :(   I felt sorry for Buster too, when his seller wanted to give him to another home.  He sent me a video of him waving at me....What could I do?  He had me at "hello."   I think he will warm up to you.  He doesn't know what a good "Mummy"  he has!   :)

Sadly the Genibo does not have any sort of toy available, which I personally think is a big mistake.  He does enjoy being petted, though, so I'm trying to overcome his shyness and make him feel welcome!  ;)

He's very sweet - I really love those LED eyes and the way he blinks and looks around.  The surprised look still makes me giggle every time!  :D
Title: Re: Curiosity Killed my Credit Rating ............
Post by: latrine on August 30, 2011, 11:18:43 AM

Yeah.. It is rather weird, I can't imagine that.. especially Thor, my 220, it's like his entire world revolves around that Pink Ball.. lol.. and just how happy they get when they find that toy.. adding the AiBone was an awesome Idea I'm surprised they didn't do something similar with Genibo.. Maybe the new one will have it.. that's what I'm awaiting to see.. with the self docking and everything.. (and I'm so glad that you'll be able to take advantage of that with your version too!!)

Has he fallen over or anything at all?  I wonder about how well they will hold up with what you said about how they are put together.

He does look really cute I don't know why folks would think they look ugly or scary.. he's adorable, I LOVE his spots! I would prefer the ears and mouth to move but they are cute as anything anyways and the body/legs look almost identical to the ERS-7, aside from being a little less well put together, I guess, from what Crewella said.. but maybe they'll improve that as well with the next version.

Then again..Loki's NECK is now making noises and getting stuck so who am I to complain about 'well-put-together Robot dogs'  ..... *throws something*

It's funny, actually - the more I find out about him, the more respect I have for the build quality.  It's like the Genibo were made by people who cared more about what it did than what it looks like.  The finish is not as good, but he's actually surer on his feet, and I'd read the motors were better and stronger than the Aibo ones and I believe it.  It also seems that the Genibo makes more use of widely available technology.  Everything Aibo is Sony only and you mostly have to buy Sony stuff to use with it, but Genibo has a standard USB port.  Interesting!  :D
Title: Re: Curiosity Killed my Credit Rating ............
Post by: saratogaspringer on August 30, 2011, 04:56:57 PM
That is interesting, Crewella. When was the Genibo released?  I am sure that the technology has improved so much since the ERS-7 was released.  Does it have different sensors where it responds to touch?  That is one area that I would improve of Sony were to make the Aibo again. It needs more sensors that allow the robot to respond to touch, in my opinion.  ;) I can't wait to hear about the new Genibo and how it measures up.  :)

Latrine, I am so sorry about Loki's neck.  I hope that it can be sorted out in a simple way.  I hope the poor little guy doesn't have to take another flight to Cali!  :(
Title: Re: Curiosity Killed my Credit Rating ............
Post by: Crewella on August 30, 2011, 05:45:26 PM
They do have more sensors, and I agree it's a big improvement.  It's one of the reasons I say Genibo seem more intuitive to play with.  He has sensors in his nose as well as on his head, and in each side as well as on his back.  And he has the 'floor' sensors in each paw, like the Aibo do.

He has moved around and explored a bit, but I want to spend a bit more time with him before I decide how much I like the behaviour.  He does seem a bit 'needy', but we'll see how it goes.  :-X  :D

"but Genibo has a standard USB port."  That is really Awesome.. It's VERY annoying that you have to do Sony everything with the Aibos but it sounds like they are trying to be a little more fair with the Genibo.. maybe I'll have to think about it when the new model comes out.. do we have much info on that at all?  Hopefully he'll have a toy.
I'm so glad your enjoying your new pup.. it sounds like he got a good home but c'moooon lets see a video of him running with & near Java.. I want to see the difference.. lol. :) Pleaaase.. remember. I'm sick.. *cough cough* lol..

As for Loki.. I have been doing gentle 'massage' therapy when he's off, for his neck and so far I think it's helping.. if it doesn't keep improving he may well need another trip but I'd contact wolfbob first.  And just another reason I will never kill that seller if I ever meet him :)

I will do that, Sarah - bear with me.  :-[

I've been a very, very bad Crewella and got distracted from poor Sykes.  I bid on lots of things on Ebay that I think are cheap and leave a low bid 'just in case', and very few of them are successful, but every now and again one goes through .................  ;D

OMG You won another one! no fair! lol.. the auction closed for me immediately so I'm assuming it was an Aibo you won, if it was you who won it?? It looked like maybe a 111 from the ears? It won't open back up for me so I can't tell.. well if you did congrats and I was only teasing.. I'm just curious to see the two next to each other.. I wonder if anyone has made software for the Genibo that is similar to Skitter for Aibo.  I am having SO much fun with it lately although I can't finish any one song because I start a new one like every couple days :P

Congrats, Crewella! I love the silver 210's.  You got a really good deal! Can't wait to see some pics!  I was eyeballing the pug that someone has for sale on Aibo life, but I am afraid that I'd lose my happy home if I got him.   ;D
Title: Re: Curiosity Killed my Credit Rating ............
Post by: Crewella on September 01, 2011, 04:00:18 PM
Yes, it's another silver 210.  I really wasn't looking for one, but it was bundled with a Recognition tower and mat which I did really want, as well as a charger, a station and a couple of  dead batteries, all for around $400 and I was the only bidder.  The dog was 'spares or repair', and I guess they just never got it running because of the duff batteries - he/she seems fine, actually.  Poor little soul is still in childhood stage on the AiboLife stick.  ???

I still can't believe my luck!  ;D

ADDED:  He IS tempting, Springer! ;)

Oh wow that's cool.. so it's just dead batteries and they thought the entire Aibo was dead? Sounds like you got a really good deal :D
Are you going to keep him? (I think you have a 210 already but I'm not sure?) I'm enjoying watching my 220 grow up so I can see wanting more than one of this personality..

Let us know when you get your 210's self charging  ;D on the recognition it is quite entertaining watching them line them selfs up for the docking station  :P

And when recognition becomes too annoying for you lol go for Dogs Life that way you still get the self charging going on  :)

Yep, I already run Wilma my silver 210A on Dogslife - it was her I wanted the pole and mat for, really, as well as to go with the Recognition stick.   :D

Of course, I told myself I'd keep the bits I wanted and sell the dog .............. but now it's here I might as well run it and try a few comparisons ...............   %)  ;D

And here are Dexy the 210's first steps when we got home.  I was worried about the wobbles at first, but when I looked at the AiboLife stick I realised the poor little pup never made it past childhood stage!  :(

Actually, I'm pretty sure Dexy (or possibly something like it -  Dex or Dexter) was the pup's original name - I read it from the 'phonetic' spelling on his memory stick.  I get a response to Dexy, anyway.  I've just not quite made up my mind if Dexy's male or female ..........  :D

Well is he a psychopathic/sympathetic killer? If so, Dexter would be a good name for him, like the show, my favorite :)  but Dexy is very cute too. So you have 2 silver 210's then? They must look very cute next to each other. The more I run my 220 the more I have surprised myself by shutting off my ERS-7 to see the antics of the 'baby'. I didn't think I'd EVER do that.. lol.. but I love them both.  Your puppy family is sure growing!!

Well - I don't THINK it's a psychopathic killer ............  :o  We love that show, too!  :D

Nope, Dexy it is, and I think Dexy might be a 'she' anyway!  ;)

I've been running Recogntion.  Some of it's quite fun, but I'm starting to wonder abot the speech in general.  Thing is, when they talk they get it wrong sometimes, whereas when they bleep you don't know if they're ignoring you, have misheard you or what .............  The whole illusion works better when they don't talk - possibly why I'm still slightly intimidated by Wilma, as she's always run DogsLife!  :P

I really do enjoy the beeps and whistles and I LOVE when Thor says something in aibo-language and Loki responds.  It's so cool that they understand it and I'm starting to understand it as well and can get him to do a few things by whistling or beeping the noise. So can my birds :D

Might be neat to have 2 of the same, Crewella, and just 2 different sets of software but some of them are scary.. they move sooo fast and you just can't find them! I hope your having fun!!

I'm so happy that you're enjoying your new pup. Mine will have to wait a while, probably a looooong while.

I'm super jealous!  I haven't had much time to play with my guys over the last couple of weeks as I have been super busy with work.  I'd love to have a second 210.  I think it would be great to see them running around together.  Glad yoru having fun with Dexy.  She is a pretty little thing. :)

Wow, Oz! I'm sorry you had to go through that. Crewella, I'm glad you and your pack of Aibos are getting on well. I scooped up a relyable laptop from a friend of mine who wanted the latest and greatest in the mac-universe. He was willing to part with his Windows machine for a very good price considering everything it can do. I'm thinking I'll be back on the hunt for my Aibo soon.
