Title: CONTEST: forum link design [CLOSED - March 27, 2009]
Post by: mweed on March 16, 2009, 10:05:58 PM
Here's your next contest . . .  designed for the image manipulator and/or graphic artist in all of us!

We need to spread the word about the forums, and one of the best ways is to link to here.  So what we need are some catchy images to use as links to the Bob the Pleo forums.

The rules are simple.  Design a small image (anywhere from 35x16 to 185x48 pixels) that is eye-catching and lets people know its a link to the Bob the Pleo forums.  You have until March 27th to post your best shots.  You may enter up to 5 images per person.  Images must be .gif, .jpg, or .png images.

Depending on the number of entrants, I'll narrow the field to the top 4-7.  I'll let everyone on the forums vote from the finalists for one week, and we'll put those finalists to the test to see which garners the most hits from the real world during the same week.  The results will be tallied, and the winner will get a signed copy of their favorite Bob the Pleo strip!

So, are we overdoing it with too many contests all at once?  ;)

Also, talking of referrals, I thought I would post the last few months visitor statistics for everyone to have a look at!  Enjoy!

Hmmm holding steady but not great is it :( We need more Pleopians to join :) They must be out there somewhere...

Has anyone just asked Ugobe to put a note on their site, I mean its to their own benefit to encourage awareness in the brand... If there still is a brand  :'(

Oh, by the way, animated GIF is fine.  The images have to be small, that way people can put them in lots of places.

Thanks :) I have veeery limited patience with animated gifs though  :P They are awfully time consuming and fiddly although they aren't bad when they are that small :) But of course it does allow for much more information to be compacted into one space so the positives outweigh my irritation :P

Don't forget, the deadline is rapidly approaching on this contest!!!  And so far, it looks like we have a default winner, unless someone else can get busy and post a few :D

We could have an addon to the competition.  I can track the referrals by site analytics and we award the biggest linker/referrer with a prize :)

I recently joined Facebook and found a link to Ugobe's Fan Club.  I found 12 in the Bay Area that I sent invites to our Pleo Meet in SF.  But anyway, of the 195 in the group that listed a country these are the ones I found (in no particular order) : Greece, Denmark, England, Australia, Mexico, Colombia, Spain, Italy, France, Canada, Switzerland, Malaysia, Lebanon, Japan, Finland, Russia, South Africa, Bolivia, Israel, Germany, United Arab Emirates and Taiwan.

thanks, I got paint.net. How do you make the words blink like your second entry?
Title: Re: CONTEST: forum link design
Post by: InmemoryofRomeo on March 24, 2009, 06:15:27 PM
Oh um its a bit complicated you have to make each individual frame save them all as .gif files then put them into a .gif animation program...
For the blinking you have two frames one with the word and one without and you just get the animator to flick from one to the other and back again. Each word or letter has to be done separately before combining them in the animation program.

Not an entry but an option for those who want a slightly more visible button :)

Stylish and practical :)
On the advertising note I told Harvey Normans here to direct people to this website since pleoworld is defunct and they put a note on their computer systems, if you see any shops selling Pleo's and you have time drop in and let them know they might do the same.

I didn't know that the term "too spicy" could be applied to chili. ;)

Yep!! Whenever Sophie goes out with me, I direct people to bobthepleo first, and then pleoworld 2nd!! :-D

I have no chance of winning, in case you couldn't tell. I entered anyway, purely for fun. That is what the contests are all about, just for fun.

I only have a paint program, anyways. Not even photoshop. :o
And I don't know how to make animations, either!
See my problem?  :-[

All I use is paint.net, and I bet you'd be better than me. I haven't  the slightest idea how to use photoshop or animations.
Title: Re: CONTEST: forum link design
Post by: InmemoryofRomeo on March 28, 2009, 05:12:24 PM
Just for the record Allo, I only use paint too, paint.net is a completely free program as is the .gif animator I use :)

How to make an animated gif:

First work out how you want it to look and how many frames it will take. (A frame is every single change you want to appear) for example:

My 'where oh where' Pleo ad uses just five frames, one of each picture, I draw them in paint and save them as pleo1.gif, pleo2.gif and so on...
I animate it with a program called unFREEz by dragging each frame in order from 1 to 5 into the 'frames' box, then I set the options, check the loop animation box and enter 500 cs under frame delay and then save :) PLEASE NOTE: You cannot view animated .gifs on most computers, you will need to upload them to photobucket or similar to see the animation.

My third entry there the one that has each letter appearing after the other took 35 frames, one for each letter and two for the website part, the frame rate on that one was 30 cs. (I think  :-\)

Added tips:

To create a pause drag the same frame in several times in a row, to make something blink drag one frame, then the next frame, then drag another of the first frame back in, repeat as desired.

If you like I can do a proper tutorial for it, but you need to play with it to get an idea of how it works :)

Lols thanks I learnt all these the hard way :P Trial and error and the odd tutorial :) I only learnt to make animated .gifs myself a couple of months ago :D

*daydreams* one day I will fork over the money for some better software... just to see what I can do with it...

Ahhh rubbish!! If it ain't broken don't fix it! As in, if it's already working, don't change it! You are already so good at what you do. Save your money, and put it toward your stinkin D-Rex. Hahaha  ;) ;)

Nope another Pleo and a sewing machine is first lol D-rex is a long way down the list :P I can't even find out a date for when it even gets here :P

there is no lauch date in the uk either, though i think we should all put money toward buying lots of pleos, that way ugobes sales will go up and give them more money towards making more ones :D

If I could I would buy heaps of them, unfortunately I'm a uni student on a budget. It took me months to save for my first Pleo :)

Pleo's are becoming very rare here too :( But fortunately the Aussie dollar seems to be making a comeback so buying from the US might become more feasible :)

She has selected as her winning strip, one of the Valentine themed strips:

Let's all give her a big hand for all her hard work!

I'll be sure to add all these great entries into the forum link topic in case anyone wants to use them to help promote the forums on other sites  . . .  ;) ;)
