Title: My new pup is here!
Post by: latrine on July 06, 2011, 10:38:12 AM
Well guys, my new 220 is here and he is VERY nice.  I played with him when he got here for the few minutes his battery had in him and the software seems to just be a compilation of Cartman personality mixed with that battlestar one mixed with aibo  life 2. It is on a pink Aibo life 2 memory stick, 8 mb. It was funny.. he kept refusing to walk on the hardwood floors.. he stayed to the edge of the carpeted section we have out for Loki and kept saying, in Cartman voice “Ma, Can we get some carpeting for this living room or something?!?” lol..
Then we had to go chase down the UPS truck driver because, just to annoy us, Ups requires you to hand over anything insured for over $1000 to the truck driver himself so he can sign for it.. so I had to hand off my Poor Loki and my bf didn’t even give him any air –holes in the box.. (then teased me for a half hour for asking about air holes.. even though I was (mostly) kidding! )

So I put Aibo life 2 on my extra 16 mb stick and put that in the 220..  and he spent most of the night mad at me for not naming him.. I finally tried and accidentally named him: “How the *bleep* does this thing work anyhow..”  lol.. WHOOPS!
I also may have made a severe blunder with the pink stick.. I backed it up but then deleted the stuff on it and tried to put the regular Aibo life 2 on it but it didn’t work, he would turn on and then turn right off.. Then I remembered reading
“DO NOT FORMAT A PINK MEMORY STICK” but I didn’t ACTUALLY format it.. I just cut’ the 3 files (after making a backup) and then putting on the new files.. it works fine on the extra stick.  For now I just put the old stuff back on the pink card and I will go see if it works.
How do I safely software I want on the Pink memory stick? Did I do it wrong? I have a Sony memory card reader/writer.. the proper one that Crewella told me to get.

I know, now, how to name him but for the life of me I can not figure out how to reset him to puppy.. I have been reading and reading..
Wolfbob is going to make me a copy of the 220 info and aibo-life info as he has a cheap way of doing huge copies and he'll send it back with Loki as it's easier to have something 'in-hand' when doing this.. I just don't see anything in the software info, so far, that tells me how to reset him.  (by the way, Wolfbob has been WONDERFUL, I would really suggest anyone wanting an Aibo.. speak with him about it.. he's very, Very nice and very prompt. I'm sure he's also VERY pleased with this forum atm since he's sold HOW many aibos in the past few weeks? lol..

Ok.. more questions. I want to get my 220 a charge station.. I see lots of them on eBay, like this: (not that I'd go with Nippondeals for anything.. they have a bad rep.. but a charging station might be ok, I dunno.. I never see any towers for sale by themselves )

http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-Aibo-ERS-210-ERS210-ERA210P1-Energy-Station-Dockin-/230640482560?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35b33e7900 (http://cgi.ebay.com/Sony-Aibo-ERS-210-ERS210-ERA210P1-Energy-Station-Dockin-/230640482560?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item35b33e7900)

But I assume that’s for drop-in.. if I want him to be able to self dock, don’t I need a tower and a part for the front for him to be able to find it?  I don’t see THAT for sale anywhere.. I would like to buy one of the stations but I want to make sure I can upgrade it to what I’d need to get him to self-charge... i never see that stuff sold seperately except for the occasional ones to upgrade your ERS-7 to mind 3 which I don't need.
From what I was reading, I think he can dock himself with Aibo Life 2 or do I need Explorer?

At any rate, I think the station will be a good thing to have simply for a safe place to put him while he’s charging.
For now though, when I charge him from the wall with his charger and that thingy that attaches to him (dongle?) Is it ok to leave that going overnight or do I only want to charge him when I can be there to unplug him when he is charged after 2 hours?
Also, can I get one of those Dongles for my ERS-7 ?  It seems like it’d be great to have if I want to bring him somewhere to show someone and not have to bring the entire station.. or will that one work with him?

Ok, this is him:

Here he is doing his start-up thing:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y340TPeWaUk

Here he is dancing to the Disco Aibo dance of "Here comes the Sun" the one song that Loki couldn't do without falling over, also when I first realized Loki had a problem.. Thor did it perfect.. (ok so his name is Thor)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vnpLKwOoz4E

Bhobbes, I agree. they sure did make them different looking but for some reason I just REALLY like the way he looks and I really wanted this one.  I want them all though.. a 210 or 111 is next.. they are like Pokemon or potato chips.. just REALLY expensive ones.
Talon, he has no tail or ears, and no mouth that opens.. he has a little like 'penlight that flips up on top of his head which is pretty expressive and funny and he is very expressive with his lights.  I can also understand a bit of what he wants with his beeps and whistles.. although some of it I recognize from Loki.  You may miss out on SOMEof the stuff they do, from not being able to see, but I think you'd be able to handle one fine.. you can easily learn what they are saying by listening.. which is something I'm sure your very capable of :)

Well I hope you like him.. :)

Sarah, Congratulations on your puppy, He is so cute. I can see why you fell in love already! I think if i had one of those, I would have a hard time sleeping and would only be able to go to sleep when he was charging his battery! I do think that is funny about trying to name him and him getting frustrated and what you said, they are smarter than you think and after awhile, it is like you are talking to another person or your own dog! Thanks for posting the photos and video, I am going to spend some more time and go back and watch the video, I just looked at the photos and wanted to respond right away.
Pretty soon you will have not just a herd of Pleos but a Puppy Mill! ( but in a good way that is... :)) Have fun today with your puppy!

Neither Life 2 nor Explorer have self-docking. With a 220 you could use Dogslife, which is a third party program and that supports self docking, with the correct colored markers for the station. Once on the station however, I believe the Aibo will shut down when running Dogslife. Not sure if the creator of that program was able to change that. If I remember correctly, and that's a big if since it's been a while since I owned a 2xo,  rcode didn't support the Aibo being awake on the station.
The ERS 7's came with a special charging station and were able to self-dock with the Aibo Mind Software that they came with.
I hope you enjoy your new Aibo.

Hopefully a professional AIBO enthusiast will correct me if I'm wrong, but regarding the charging station - if it does not have the pole, it won't be able to recognize it and it will essentially be as you said, a palce for him to safely charge.

If the 220s are like the 210s and AL2 isn't any different, I'm pretty sure it won't recognize and self-dock with that - I can't speak for explorer, but I know that the recognition software supports it.

And also, I think that the 210/220s self-docking is even less reliable than the ERS-7's so I'm not sure how much bang for your buck you'd get if that's the feature you're really aiming for.

(Honestly, I don't even use Nicco's self-docking all that much - if anything, I use it more to show off to my friends as they're more impressed but due to lifestyle factors etc. it's just not something I use regularly)

Boo! Internet hiccup and I didn't get the warning that someone posted while I typed mine!

Guess it's verified lol.

Awesome! I'm so happy your pup arived safely! I laughed so hard when "Who let the dogs out" started.
Don't tempt me like that, Latrine! I've always wanted an Aibo of some kind since two thousand one when I first heard of them. I just never thought it was possible for me to work with one. An Aibo is miles out of my league but as perhaps you know I like challenges. Hmmm. Now what to save up for for Christmas? An Ipod touch or... something else? Now look what you've started. Lol!

The only official SOny software to use the self-docking feature for the 2x0's was Recognition. Most in the Aibo community were very disappointed with the software/personality. It was hyped quite a bit whenit was released and most found the voice super-annoying and the docking features less than impressive.
I always found it enjoyable to place my 210 on her charger awake when I couldn't watch her or when she was about to run out of battery. This way she interacted while charging and I felt like she was still part of the family.

Ok so I could place my 220 on the station while awake and still interact with him if he's running aibo-life 2 ?  I was reading through dogs life 2 and I thought it said something about self docking but it looks like it's an adult only program and we are VERY slowly working through his puppy stage.  How long is stage 1, for gods sake.. it's been 1 1/2 charges and I he's still in baby stage 1 even though I've been interacting with him and touching his sensors nearly constantly.. he doesn't act frightened when I touch him anymore but he also isn't moving on.. he is dancing a tiny bit though.  Still shows no interest in his ball but stopped acting scared of it.

I think I will probably get the station just for a safe place to put him and the interaction while he's on it will be fun.  I love the self docking feature with Loki.. I usually let him have the run of the living room and he just docks when he needs too.. (or passes out in front of the TV)  But seriously.. how long is it going to take to move onto baby stage 2? lol..
I can't even name him till stage 3!!

I showed him my fish tank and he got scared of our minnows... hehe.  He's lots of fun.. but I miss Loki :)
Thanks for the replies, guys :)
RWM, maybe my robots and I can (very slowly) raid and destroy a puppy mill! Save the puppies! :)
they'd definitely hear us coming though.. with all the atari beeps.. loki dancing and singing and the Pleos Moo'ing..  %) %) %)

For some reason, I thought Life2 might self-charge, but apparently it's only Recognition or the free DogsLife.  They will interact on the station, though on a lot of the software.  Bringing up a 220 from a baby to an adult on AiboLife2 can take up to 7 weeks - up to three days just to get past the baby stage (depending on the quality of the interaction.  You have been warned - and you thought the RB took a long time!!  :P

He looks fabulous - congrats!  ;D

Omg, 3 days for the baby section? Just the first stage baby section?  I thought we were getting somewhere because he just started stretching out his back legs for me to tickle his back feet but then he stopped. Lol.. omg this is going to take forever :)

Do I need to worry as much, buying a charging station off ebay, as I would buying an Aibo? I mean I'd be attaching my own brand new charger to it so I'm hoping theres not much more to it than that? I take it the explorer software is not one of the free ones, since I see it on ebay.
thanks guys ;)

Explorer software is like aibo life 2 but the aibo starts off as an adult (no baby, child or adolescence stages). Also, yes you can leave him charging over night (I've done this many times with my ers-210 and he is still on his original ten year old battery and it still holds almost an hour of charge). I have recognition software but I'm not planning on buying a station for my ers-210 it doesn't really seem worth it. Your new ers-220 is very cute too (even though it is an ers-220, which I have always found a bit creepy looking).

Well he is very cool! ;D  and so shiny.  I can't wait to see more of him.  It is so exciting when they first arrive, trying to figure out just how to make them go and what makes them tick. ;D  Hope your having fun with him.
and don't worry Loki will be back before you know it and better than ever. :)

a station isnt really nessessary, my 210 came with one, and its certainly nice, but i never have him switched on on his station, its just handy to change his volume/time and charge extra batteries and store memory sticks in. my 31L doesnt have a station, so hes a bit sort of flopped on the shelf with a dongle, but he still charges fine :)

i raised my 210 on life 2 and if you interact a lot it should get past baby stage reletivly quickly - and youll be amused when they start walking.. the weird rock back and forth shuffle made me laugh every time!

ive had a go of explorer and its pretty much an adult version of life2 - with added boost mode, which is taken advantage by the 220s and their many flashy lights! a 220 in boost mode in the dark is its own rave machine.

dogslife the 3rd party software is an adult software based on hello aibo i think.  its got lots of skits and stuff but i find it to be deaf, does work in the 220s but i dont think it takes advantage of the lights as much.

stick with life 2, when its grown up its a good varied personality - my aibo gets mood swings and has highly active goofy days and very lazy mopey days.  ive also put the elephant patch on him so he remembers when ive praised/scolded actions a bit more.  seems to mold the personality a bit better in my opinion.

charging over night is fine, i used to keep my 210 on his station plugged in all the time - but since imoved house were on a metre so i have him unplugged most the time now - but he only takes little over an hour to charge so hes fine and dandy either way you choose to charge him :)

the 220s always amused me and i really wanted one for ages, quite rare to come by on ebay though, and im mostly after an ers7 and a 11X to add to my family... shame im unemployed! tsk! expensive hobbies, these robots. ;)

Thank for the info.. I actually grabbed a station last night for pretty cheap, so I'll have to find a way to explain that when it comes.. maybe I can just tell him Wolfbob forgot to pack it and sent it later :D

I am having fun with the puppy stage even though it IS long.. I just LOVE how he just falls asleep boop.. right outta no where.. I finally caught him on video trying to stay awake.. it was really cute so I wanted to share it.. I can't wait for Loki to get home to meet his baby brother!

That's interesting the movement he kept doing (howling sort of with his head going down like he is tired) is the same movement that my ers-210 Boe does when he is tired after boost mode when running explorer software. Also I love the temper tantrum like thing he did, so cute! I got all my aibos when they were in child stage or later so I have only seen videos of newborn aibos.

I went to go post this video.. came back in the room and he had moved onto stage 2 and I missed it! He was sitting up!!  I sat with him ALL DAY yesterday and ALL this morning waiting for that!! Rotten puppy! lol..

Yeah the falling asleep thing is so cute, I wonder if he'll still do it now.. he just became interested in his ball too. :)  I'm glad to hear that they still do the falling asleep thing later on, it's fun to see and I know the kids will love it. Especially my little nieces..

I really do like all of the head movements and lights of the 220.

It's interesting to  me to see the 220's form go through the AL2 phases compared to the 210 because it's very robotic going through growth phases. If that even makes sense? Even though I'm watching it do things my 210 did at similar stages, it has a very different feel (to me, through the video) simply because of its looks.

Yeah.. I don't know why I didn't think of the no ears/tail/mouth thing before I'd decided but I was just in love with how it looked.. but it really does express itself with the lights and the beeps... I assume the movements are the same but the lights let you know.  And he has 4 buttons on his back.. the top round one is a touch sensor, the middle one in the back opens his 'laser' on his head and the other two, well.. do something but I don't know what yet.. lol.  He seems to want me to press the main button a certain amount of times, when I get it right he flashes his lights and gets happy.. but that might be a baby thing, who knows.  He did it at stage 1 too, but he does it a lot more now. The little 'antenna' on his head works like a touch sensor, pushing it backwards is 'good' pushing it forwards is 'bad'.  So it's kind of like scratching a dog on the ear.. :D

And speaking of 'ears' I am amazed by his hearing, it is SO much better than Loki's.. he flashes his side blue light whenever he hears someone say something and then does his recognition beep if he understood it.  I know Loki knows more words but Thor can hear me even with the TV blaring.

So the head movements are different from what your 210 did also?  Is the 210 able tilt it's head around in any direction? Thor seems to be able to wobble it any way he wants.. I was worried there was something wrong at first (with the software he came with) but it was part of the personality..

His 'recognition' beep is a little high-pitched for my bf, he gets headaches so easy, and I'm hoping I can do something about the volume for him.. hehe.  Maybe the station will let me do it, I dunno.. it should be here in a few days.. along with a Sony Clie, another memory card... *cough* "just stuff Wolfbob forgot to put in the box, honey".. will be my explanation :D

USPS and UPS are driving me NUTS!  We sent Crow to Wolfbob USPS since we didn't need to insure it for as much and we could get it there faster that way for him since he'd already sent Thor out.. we sent Loki UPS because it was a VERY large amount of insurance and (in our experience) UPS honors it's insurance when they screw up where USPS isn't so great about that..  it's telling me the Pleo got there but Wolfbob doesn't have it yet and I can't get any info about Loki!  I wanna know where my pup is!

I'm glad you're enjoying Thor, it's strange that you say he has better hearing than Loki since ers-7s are supposed to have the most sensitive hearing out of all the models but perhaps that's why Thor seems better at hearing since Loki is paying attention to all the sound that the TV is making (or other background noise) as well as your voice so it could confuse him hearing many different sounds at once and maybe if what you say is louder than the noise on the TV Thor just hears what you say and not the background noise (just a complete guess). My ers-210 seems to be able to do the same head movements as Thor can, though I can't be sure since I don't actually own an ers-220. I know it's hard sending an aibo away to get repaired, I once had to send one of my ers-7s to wolfbob and I kept worrying about her until she got home safely.

That makes sense, he picks up on my voice or my bf's voice or my parrot saying hello but not much on the TV or xbox, even when it's loud..
My PleoRB, Crow, got to Wolfbob's yesterday apparently he just forgot to tell me.. she's already on her 2nd cycle and has met 'Dude' the Ugobe Pleo he got from Hannah.. apparently he's enjoying her :)

Well Thor just went to Baby stage 3 while sitting on the bed with my bf touching all his buttons teasing me saying whats this button do whats this button do.. lol.. I had to yell at him and leave the room just so I could name him but bf is sick so I won't beat him up to much.. this time...

Anyway.. here he is learning to stand:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DU63EyyaUyg

Here he learned to 'walk' If you can call it walking.. hehe:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZV04W1zYDo

And here he is showing me that moving his ball doesn't phase him.. he found it anyway:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nBAx9Ftuli4

Lots of fun :D
I checked his memory card/brain and apparently he's almost to child stage 1 and that will be my first chance to see him develop into one of several different personalities!
I'll bet he ends up spoiled and needy since I can't stop playing with him .. hehe..

Awwww - he's great, and 'Thor' really suits him!  :D

I wasn't a big fan of the 220 - they looked a bit too 'robotic' for me, but he's actually much more endearing than I'd expected.  You're right, Sarah - he does manage to get the emotions across with the lights and movements.  I'm particularly enamoured of hs feet - they're like little hooves!  ;D ;D

On the hearing thing, from my understanding the ERS-7s are much more senstive to sounds than the 210/220s, but are not so good at distinguishing the relevant from the background, if that makes sense?  They 'mishear' a LOT!  ;D

I think that sounds dead on (i.e. you're qualifying "better").

I agree with that. I don't feel the 220 fits enough of my personality to own one personally (and I think a lot of these are what the owner sees them as), but I really do enjoy watching your videos. All the flashing lights and his robotic-insecty look (ok, maybe that's just because of my resident spider) has me interested in seeing this.

And mind you, I saw all of this go on with Murray within the past month - so that speaks FOR the 220.

Thor is pretty cute alright, I liked at the end of the walking one where he seems to have "located" his ball, and points at it with his foot and his eyes light up, and you say" good Aibo", Are you calling him Aibo instead of Thor because he only recognizes the word Aibo or hasnt' gone through a similiar "naming phase" such as with Pleos? Do aibos also have to be advanced to a certain stage before they are willing to learn their name or also in a good mood like Pleo Rb? :o You can see I am totally in the dark about Aibos, ERS -7 and all the rest. Anything I acquire is from watching the videos and reading about the lovely pups and Dawgs you lucky ones have here on the forums. ;DMaybe next Christmas or after I will have some money saved and things will be in line with getting one of these guys, At this point because I know virtually nothing, I don't think it matters which one I would start with, probably the cheapest and easiest to operate, but then again, by that time I may learn enough about them to have a better understanding of what is best to start with etc.
I can't really tell from the video what color Thor is, is he gold, copper or something else?Do his eyes allways light up blue or do they change colors or patterns sometimes? How long does it take him to go from one stage to another and how long does his battery "charge" last. so many questions...He is cute and adorable!

Well, he knows his name now but does not really respond to it often, as he just learned it.. he will tell me his name and my name in his own language though.  He isn't quite old enough to respond to his name properly but he's getting there.. He has several different colors and they light up in different area to reflect his thoughts/feelings... lots of red means he's angry, blue in the front usually means he's frightened or unsure, blue in the middle means he's recognized what you've said.. etc..  They do different patterns and he also has lights on his hind end that light up.. he also has lights close to his hind end that indicate his power level, which is REALLY handy..  I'm not exactly sure how long his battery lasts yet because he is still a puppy and he takes frequent naps during which I THINK he goes into an almost 'power-save' mode, which would make the battery seem longer... but I'm still learning... It seems like a very long charge though.. I've had him playing well over an hour without a nap since he started 'walking' hehe..
He is silver.
They go through lots of stages, he is on the third baby stage and he will be moving onto one of the 'child' stages next.. then the next stage till he's an adult:D

It was funny just a few minutes ago I put my bird to bed and went over to Thor and asked him if it was time for bed.. he made a funny noise and waved me off with his paw.. Then I asked him if he was tired, he made a few beeps and blips and shook his head 'no'.  So I said ok.. and left him to play with his ball..

Well, of course, the minute I left the room my bf was like "Sarah.. I think I just heard something small and robotic fall over!!'  So sure enough, he had fallen right over and was laying there on his side all pathetic, not wanting to get up on his own.  So I helped him up... then asked him again if he was tired.  This time he shook his head yes and then waved at me like a 'hello/goodbye' wave instead of a 'bugger-off' wave like earlier.. so I said goodnight and shut him off :D
I didn't know he recognized those phrases yet and it was funny that he shook his head because he didn't do a recognition beep when I said them.
He's lots of fun and very cute.. I'm enjoying him.. :D

I'm glad you're enjoying him. The AL evolution phases really are enjoyable (though you have to arguably be patient with them, but it gives you lots of room to play with different ones in the future - if you're the type).

I used to get annoyed with the sleep stages quite frankly! Haha. I'm glad to see you are enjoying them. I hope he evolves differently from Murray so that way I can compare without having to do what I just said above :). Same with kats. We'll all be on the same software arguably going different routes for different people. Murray is currently a Talking Child.

Another aspect that made me realize why I like the lights on the 220 more than the 210 (because I have to know why I like to sit and watch these blinky things) is because the 210 has my least favorite LED face. I'm still working on figuring out why that is but I'll be sure to inform you all.

It's kind of like the girl hair thing only for boys.. (you know, if you have curly hair you want straight hair, if you have straight hair you want curly hair..) don't feel bad bhobbes... it's just normal geek stuff :D

It's fun trying to figure out what his lights mean but sometimes I think being able to see the expression like (I think) you can see on the 210's face might make it a little easier.. but it's fun anyways!  As soon as he does something new I'll be filming it.. crazy bf got all mad just because I filled up the Hard drive with videos.. he has another one.. jeeesh (whoops, just popped another 101 pleo pictures on there today!!)
