Title: Fate of Ugobe/Support
Post by: justbede on March 10, 2009, 01:32:07 PM
The person in the below linked thread claims that ugobe have finally stated that they are struggling, have had to downsize their work force and are trying to find a cheaper server for pleoworld. If true it doesn't sound good.

I read the WIRED blog where it was first announced they downsised just to Idaho.  Their server move was the thing that closed the forums and hence why this forum exists.

We know they downsized.  Emails to customers from the Ugobe help line state they cut 75% of their staff and consolidated to eagle, ID.  We know they also downsized the server as of Dec 10th, 2008, but I admit I've never seen an official statement from Ugobe about their web service.  Would be nice if we could get an offical response from Ugobe as to what's going on! :P

Yeah i find it really odd that they haven't even taken the site down properly or posted some kind of notice.

Take a look at my last post in "Pleoworld Disastor" it might explain why it may take them longer to get back to you then it should. But I would not worry as I have not heard anything about Ugobe not returning Pleo's. I'm sure its just a delay.  :)

Others have reported not being able to contact Ugobe either.  But no word has come out.  In theory, Caleb Chung has a speaking engagement coming up here soon . . . .

Do you mean he is actually going to talk to the bobthepleo forum ?
Last I heard he had been refusing to do interviews.
If he is going to I would love to know when as I would like to be online as he talks.

He won't be talking with us....heavens no. He'll be doing some speech or what have you. We'll just be the first (and only) group to get a copy of this speech.

I guess I should post the information about Caleb Chung again. As listed in Pleo Cafe under the title " Caleb Chung talks live?" junkroxy reported that Caleb Chung was going to give a free lecture at the Garden City Library.  You can check that thread for the complete story, but it boils down to this e-mail sent by the Youth Services/Outreach Coordinator:

"We’ve confirmed with Caleb Chung that we can record the event  and post it on the website and we will try are best to do this.  I’ll keep you informed about our progress!  Thanks for your interest – we hope the teens in our community will take advantage of the privilege of hearing Caleb speak!

Thanks again,

I also sent our pleo back to ugobe for repair Feb 5th. Ours would never walk. I spoke to Rafeal around Feb 18th and he said we had defected sensors and camera. Ours was brand new so they were going to fix it or send a new one. He had told me we would have ours 2 weeks from that conversation. Last week I tried to contact them by chat, email, and phone. I have had no luck reaching them. Their phone is now disconnected. THEY STILL HAVE OUR PLEO! I am affraid we may waisted 350 dollars and have nothing to show for it. I have a bad feeling we may not get them back.

I had to go through that experience too. I'm sure he/she should be coming soon. I waited weeks for my second pleo to get here.Once the pleo got there we waited. After a week, we phoned, they said all of the pleos were on back order. Then the guy remembered us and said one was being shipped today. After that I waited 11 more days then she finally got here.

We know that Ugobe has downsized and everything is likely to take longer than what is expected. Do write to the company. It might be faster to get a response then calling.
Title: Re: Fate of Ugobe/support.
Post by: D-Rex on March 26, 2009, 09:22:16 PM
Now I'm really worried. I have not been able to get a hold of Ugobe to find out where is our pleo. First their phone number was disconnected. Then they would not respond to email or web chat. Now their web site is not found. I have tried several times and can not find it. If they have gone under and closed up I'll never get our Pleo back or the money we spent on it. I sure hope they are planning to send everyone their Pleos back before letting all their employees go.

Ugobe Next Tech here in Australia appears to have shut down too :o

I contacted them about another Pleo but haven't had a reply, their number is disconnected, their email comes back as undeliverable and their website is gone :(
Title: Re: Fate of Ugobe/support.
Post by: Fireboy on March 26, 2009, 10:58:47 PM
I have checked and you are both correct the Pleoworld site and the Australian site are currently both down. But the Ugobe store and the asian site Pleoroom are both still up and running and trying to sell pleos. I would keep trying to contact them, but remember they have had to recently scale down their workforce so things might take longer to get resolved and if problems arise with their site it might take longer for them to notice and repair it. We will just have to be patiant and hope that this is not a sign that things have gotten worse for Ugobe.
Title: Re: Fate of Ugobe/support.
Post by: mweed on March 26, 2009, 11:07:31 PM
Ugobe.com is also down.  Ugobe.com and www.pleoworld.com are on the same server.  The server appears to actually be down, rather than gone.  Not sure if that's good or bad . . .
Title: Re: Fate of Ugobe/support.
Post by: Fireboy on March 26, 2009, 11:17:20 PM
Try going to store.ugobe.com ( http://store.ugobe.com/ ) that will take you to the sales page of the Ugobe site but the links to the rest of the site are not working. To me this suggests that the server is still running but parts of the site have been shut down. Hopefully for repair, adjustments or maintenance.

I wish they'd just tell us what is happening, even if it is the worst case scenario, at least we'd know  :'(

The ugobe store runs on a separate server.

I have to say that I'm glad I got rid of my pleo while I could still get a refund.  Not looking good for UGOBE now.  Anyone else hear the toll of the funeral bell?

I;m actually glad I have my pleos and would never consider getting rid of them. They are so precious.
I can't believe that Ugobe would close down. Now, we really need to be patient to see what their next step is.
Title: Re: Fate of Ugobe/support.
Post by: ScribbleMonkey on March 27, 2009, 12:56:26 PM
I think there next step is to quietly curl up and die. Lets be realistic, Ugobe's only product is Pleo. This isn't the best economy to be selling expensive toys. and if they are in such a poor financial situation that they couldn't even maintain basic website updates. What are the chances of them launching  and marketing a new product?

It stinks because there was a lot of potential. But the writing has been on the wall for months.  :'(

I wonder how this effects Pleo in other countries. IIRC Ugobe used distribution partners for making Pleo available overseas. Will Pleo live on even if Ugobe does not?

UGHHHHHHHHHHHH!!! THIS IS SOOOOOOOO FRUSTRATING!! I think I grew 6 gray hairs between reading all these posts and on the other threads about Ugobe going out of business!! Goshhhhhhh!!! This is so frustrating. I hope so bad they can pull through. I so thought there was going to be a Pleo in every home by 2010!!  My point is Pleo has so much potential. So much!! I just hope the potential gets recognized.

Bri, someone has to still be in charge of Ugobe. They may be down to just a few people. I hope you do get your pleo back soon. Having written to Ugobe, has any mail that you sent, come back to you? That's when I would get, really, worried.
This has to be so frustrating to you to be without your pleo, but I do believe you will hear from someone from ugobe.

In the last 2 weeks I have sent several emails when their site was up. Each time I only received their standard message that (their computer assigned) a case number is issued and someone will return an email with in 2 days. I have sent 4 emails to support. and 2 to their corp site. I have yet to receive any additional communication. I called the local county sheriff for Eagle, ID and they told me to file a report here in Texas. I did that today. The officer informed me that their is little they can do but they will file a theft charge. Based on the past emails I have received in Feb from Ugobe stating they would send our Pleo back by the end of the moth of Feb and then cutting all communications like this is not legal and will be considered theft until it is returned or communication is sent that it will be. I am extremely upset and not just because we do not have Pleo or that I am out $350 plus $50 for shipping to and from Ugobe but because this PLeo was my sons only Christmas gift and now he is not taking it well. We all enjoyed having Pleo for that short while. I would buy him another but we had to save money just to get the first one. I should say the second one since the first one we had bought for Christmas also had a defect and we sent it back to where we bought it. Do not ask me why I thought this time Ugobe would be able to fix Pleo correctly. I thought this would prevent a 3rd defected Pleo. The place we bought it would refund my money or send an other if I had the Pleo to send back. I cant not buy another now. Like it is for many other people, this is a difficult time for my family. I am just so Disappointed now.

Has anyone tried contacting the overseas Pleo distributors to ask about what might be going on? Since Ugobe cannot be reached at all. It seems like a good excuse to bug those that might know for answers.  ;)

It seems like I've been had. I put money directly into Next Technologies account ($479.00Aus) on Monday the 23rd of March,2009 and by the Friday I had heard nothing and on checking the site - It was no more! - no contact! no email! No money - Nothing! I contacted Pleoworld the next day they were also down. They could at the very least do the right thing and refund the money. I noticed at least one person got one from here on the forums. Did any one else get ripped off? I have gone to consumer affairs and have let everyone I could think of know about this - On investigating they didn't even have a properly registered Australian business account which is needed to trade under a .com.au address. I will remember this experience and will never buy UGOBE anything. :-[

Oh no :o I'm so sorry to hear that. I was going to buy a Pleo from there not too long ago but when they didn't answer my emails I decided not to. I got Matilda and Lilo through Harvey Normans but they have very little if any stock left and they can't get anymore at this stage :( I hope you can work something out, perhaps contact consumer affairs or something...

It isn't Ugobe's fault though, Next Tech was just a distributor not actually part of Ugobe :(

I'm heading over to Melbourne this weekend, and hoping to pick up a Pleo from Harvey Norman - though the continued lack of support and updates offered by Ugobe is freaking me out more than a little. Will see if anything comes from Caleb's library talk - and whether Harvey Norman even have any in stock! - as to whether I bring one back to NZ with me. Are you in Melbourne?

Welcome Thebrockoli!! Best of luck with getting yourself a Pleo. I would like to say, I bought Sophie 1 through Sharper Image. (I believe it's American only) Anywho, I had Sophie 1 for quite some time until her neck broke. It was the saddest thing, I swear. Anywho, we had a warranty through Sharper Image. So, when I went to use the warranty to my surprise I found out Sharper Image had closed. The company that was covering their warranties had no Pleos, so they cut me a check for appreciated value.

Just keep that in mind. If you buy Pleo, buy a warranty. If anything goes wrong, just use your warranty. If Ugobe does go under after you get Pleo, and you experience trouble, just use your warranty. That's an expense Harvey Norman should cover, not Ugobe.
Title: Re: Fate of Ugobe/support.
Post by: InmemoryofRomeo on March 30, 2009, 05:44:37 PM
You don't need to buy a warranty here, Pleo comes with a default twelves months :) Technically I could take Lilo back and have a new charger sent for nothing but I'd rather pay myself than wait another two months :P

I do hope you can get one, but you may have trouble. I live in regional Victoria and my Pleo had to come all the way from Sydney :o If you can I would ring Harvey Normans before you go there, they might be able to get one in for you if you can give them a couple of days notice :) They do overnight deliveries from Sydney to Melb. Good luck and lets us know how you get on.

Trust me Pleo is worth the time and the trouble :)

Title: Speculations?
Post by: Junkroxy on March 31, 2009, 12:27:59 PM
I found this article on Engadget:

We don't have any official word on this as of yet, but as our main man Ryan Block noted in a tweet earlier (and Wired speculated on back in February), it looks like Pleo-maker Ugobe may -- in fact -- be extinct. As of this writing, the company's site was offline, and calls to the dino-bot factory have gone unanswered (though their voicemail system seems to be humming along just fine). While we haven't heard a peep one way or another from the folks in charge, Wired reported in its article that the company was struggling months ago to stay afloat in our sinking economy. Could it be that people just don't have a spare $350 to drop on a robotic toys these days? Say it ain't so. Whatever the case, you can be sure that just like actual dinosaurs, the legacy Pleo will leave behind is rich, storied, and often violent. How about you there in / on the Interverse... heard any news about Ugobe lately?

It usually means that someone has paid for a domain (and the webhosting account to which the domain is pointing) but has not yet put anything up on the domain/account. I, and others, interpret this as Ugobe is moving their sites again, from being hosted by themselves to being hosted by a dedicated hosting company once again. If that is true it's a good thing, it at least means they have enough life in them to spend the money getting a good webhost. Pity they can't actually tell any of us what is going on, but I prefer secret server moving to secret bankruptcy any day ...

:-[I shipped my Pleo on March 8, 2009 and I last spoke with Rafael on March 14 via email. I was told I should be receiving a response from Ugobe shortly. Today is April 1st and I haven't heard anything from Ugobe, not to mention their website doesn't exist and their support line is disconnected. I'm VERY worried like you guys. I want my Pleo back and somehow I feel I wont get him (Linus) back :(  I hope I'm wrong though. Pleo was one of my Christmas presents (2008)

What happened was that his neck broke. I mean completely, it would actually hang down and wouldn't move either way.

I hope I get Linus back. Listening to some of you guys actually gives me hope that I will.

Post by: Darkwolf on April 03, 2009, 06:31:45 AM

Ladies and gentlemen,

I don't think there is a single member that has not noticed that Ugobe has given the impression to be sinking.
As of late, it seems that Ugobe may already be under water and out of sight on the surface.
Engadget speculates the same thing: http://www.engadget.com/2009/03/30/has-pleo-maker-ugobe-folded/
The article got an update that it's back up again but that is no longer the case (again.)
According to the last comment and what I can see when accessing the websites, the hosting has been pulled. Completely.

So both Ugobe.com and Pleoworld.com are gone!

If this all has to do with moving and everything is ok, why wouldn't we be informed?
I would like to think everything is not all that bad and that TADAAAAA! they will appear back on the surface again at some point... but I cannot help but think this is the end.
Like the real dinosaurs... Pleo is de last of it's kind marked for extinction once again...

I am curious what your thoughts are on the matter?
Share and discuss!

May i point out, Ugobe's PR firm had the email listing to send mail to fans

Since Ugobe pulled the plug on PR i bet that list like the forum is lost.

When the web sites went away back in December, it took them a week to get anything back up, and almost a month before they had things working "normally".  So being down like this, oddly, seems typical of Ugobe.  That's not to say it good, just not unexpected.  It's a bad way to run a web site, but it doesn't mean they're gone . . .

To me, the phone number being disconnected was a true bad sign.

So . . . Who's up for a field trip to Idaho???  ;)

Haha, that's not including the red bull, the coffee, or the 5 hour energy shot!

Hehehe, can you imagine Fancyfont, if it takes me nearly two days of non-stop driving to get there in a car how long it would take for Sophie to get there? She'd have to become the energizer bunny! Humans would go extinct before Sophie reached her destination! :-D

I sent in a email, of course I don't expect a reply but it doesn't hurt to try :P I sent it in under media/press lol maybe they will actually read it :P

Here is what I wrote:

I am contacting you on behalf of the concern public at bobthepleo.com, rumors abound on the internet over the fate of our beloved Pleo, is Ugobe going extinct? Is Pleo set to die out like the dinosaurs? Please, please don't ignore us, and give us some idea of what is happening :o

Thank you.

They have a new head honcho too:

Doug Swanson is an aggressive, innovative leader with more than 20 years of successful, progressive experience in high tech sales and marketing management for global corporations. His past affiliations include such prestigious companies as Eaton Corp, Varian Associates, Advanced Semiconductor Materials, and Product Systems Inc. His background ranges from engineering, new product entry, marketing, sales to President/COO. He has negotiated multi million dollar hardware and software contracts worldwide. Doug represented Eaton in the National Security Industry Association, and briefed U.S Congressman in Washington DC on behalf of the DOD and Silicon Valley consortium. He is an U.S. Air Force/Strategic Air Command veteran, and is a current licensed acrobatic pilot, as well as an avid sailor. Mr. Swanson joined Ugobe in January 2009.

It also appears that they are swapping servers:

At this point I just want to know what they are going to do for those of us who sent our ploes back for repair. I have know idea if or when I will see my pleo again. I can not stand the feeling of paying $300 plus dollars for nothing. I live in Texas and if I did not just spend the last two months out of work due to heart surgery back on Feb 4Th I would drive out there and get him back myself.

Amazon.co.uk has Pleo's in stock again (through Gadgetshop):

Here is an update on the Fate of Ugobe. From what I read it seems like Ugobe has shut down.

Its really sad because it looks like I wont get my Pleo back. I shipped Pleo on March 8, 2009 to have it repaired due to broken neck. Now I read online that UGOBE filed for bankruptcy.
At least I know why my emails were never answered.

By the looks of it UGOBE has filed for bankruptcy. That would explain why none of my emails have been answered. I even mailed a letter

to UGOBE and no answer. Now I see why. If this is really true and UGOBE has filed for bankruptcy then I guess I wont be getting my Pleo

back which I sent more than a month ago to get repaired. I wont see my PLEO again :'( and that is sad!

This is the article I found stating UGOBE has closed its doors.

*fingers crossed* Lets hope something good does come of it. If Pleo were bought by a larger company the future for our little robot pals might not be so bleak :o But sadly all this auctioning, refinancing, organizing etc takes time and then there is restaffing, advertising (I do hope that the people who buy it get some serious advertising done) the organization of production, software (the list is endless) it is unlikely that we will hear much about Pleo for months.

what is a Pleo -IP

IP is the abbreviation for Intellectual Property.  This generally refers to all the non-physical parts of your pleo:  the software, designs, processes, knowledge and info about pleo, how he works, and how to make them.

Watches tick? ???

30 some years ago, there was a nonsensical joke, a non-sequitur, where one man asks another what time it is, and the second man replies "I don't know.  I forgot my phone."  You see, thirty years ago that was funny, because it made no sense.  Today, people don't wear watches.  If they want to know what time it is, they just look at their phone.  So, yes, at one time, watches did tick . . .    but perhaps you remember a time when people wore sundials . . .  ;) :D

Well, I ordered my pleo anyway today before its getting too rare and too expensive to buy. I wonder now that official support is gone, is there anybody trustworthy who can repair them in worst case? I also wrote to Pleos Italy and Malaysia official sites just to hear whether they still support Pleo customers.
