I'm sure something of this sort has happened before, but I think it's potentially a good idea:
Some sort of national (or international) meetup of assorted owners of Pleos. It would be an opportunity for owners to get to know eachother, discuss things in real time (as opposed to speed-of-the-internet forum posting), and of course, a chance for our Pleos to meet one another.
I realised that it would be quite easy on this site in particular, since the avatars of every member actually displays what country they live in.
-
I do think that you Brits would have an advantage as the geographical area is much smaller in perspective than the US, and I do not know exactly how many US owners there are, but I know I would have a impossible time for example to meeting someone on the East Coast, just do not have that kind of money. I do think it would be a fun idea for those that can fly or travel. ( I do not even drive... :( :o) and I will have to just be happy to do my meeting virtually online, but I think there are many Pleo owners who would love to do this. I also know I could not tow all of my guys around, just three probably would be all I could handle unless we had our own Pleo Mobile.
I would love to see how others do it though, It could be lots of fun for everyone. I know there are quite a few people in the Australia area too. Great idea even if it never materializes. :)

We could have a virtual global meetup, in the chat room, but sadly like many other I couldn't afford to travel far :(
-
I've often thought about this too but like everyone else, I don't have the money to do much traveling. Also being blind plus driving equals disaster. Lol! I'd really like to meet other pleos and pleo-owners in person as well. Could you guys imagine a large convention hall like the one in that Something Marquis Hotel in Atlanta with all the chairs along the walls and the center of the room packed with Pleos? *sighs and smiles* I can.

It would be funny if we could have a convention with a huge square pit surrounded by bars, to lower our Pleos carefully into-- and then there would be Pleo fights. But of course, it would be more cuddle-fighting and honking contests than anything :D
-
Talon, they're currently developing cars that drive themselves so maybe in the future... ;)
I agree with the UK/US practicalities. Even if I could afford a trip to a different coast (which I only go East, no offense to you Westies here ;)), I'm not sure how feasible it'd be for a Pleo meet. Especially when so many users seem international which means far for all of us involved! I suggest that we combine the UK, the US, and AU as this seems to cover the majority of posting members, and then the rest can come visit us. I'll figure out what kind of sorcery is involved in uniting land masses dispersed throughout the globe and get back with you.
However, if there was such a Pleo meet, I'd want it in the UK (as I'd pay to travel there!). But this would more or less be an excuse to visit there :)
I think the logistics are probably just too difficult/complicated to make it practical - especially since we don't really know how many Pleos are out there and how they are geographically distributed. Maybe we could all go to China and see a Pleo factory?

Perhaps a mass Pleo meetup would somewhat resemble this:

(Without the random floating theropod, of course)

Ooo! Cars that drive themselves? Where have I been. Well the hurdle will be overcome for someone in the not-so-distant future. Anyway the only way I could see to make this work is if we had smaller meets in our country of origin and then posted all the results- video, audio, messages, photos. What a thread! This is starting to remind me of that really old movie where these Hill-billy guys organized this massive eighteen-wheeler convoy. If only I could remember the name of it. *scratches head* Or... was the name Convoy? I'm better with books.

Aibo owners have managed meets in various countries, so I don't see why Pleo owners couldn't! :D
-
I am thinking of planning a holiday to England sometime in the next couple of years so if a Pleo meet was to happen there I'd probably be up for it. ;D It would give me something to look forward to as part of my trip. :) Also be a good excuse to bring a pleo or two with me on holiday. :D
-
Tee hee, well if you give me a couple of years notice I could probably make it too :D
-
Heck - we should be able to figure something out given that timescale!! :D
-
I wish that would work! There used to be an international AIBO convention, maybe one day they'll be a pleo convention! Still though, RWM said she couldn't get to the East coast, and I am literally on the coast, I can't get to the West coast, we already had 8 members post and 3 have said they can't get to the opposite coast, let alone the rest are in a different country! I wish it would work though!
-
I'll gladly visit your area if you want to host :)
We could host it in DC - lots of friends there so I can stay cheap! And it's easy for me to get to.
-
I would love to go to pleo meet but I could only attend one on the east coast since I am a bit afraid to take a pleo on a plane, if I came to one I'd also bring a few of my aibos ;)
-
Glad to see so many people interested in the idea.
And I can safely say, if enough people were interested, I'd be more than willing to arrange some sort of meetup in the UK sometime. I probably wouldn't be able to attend any sort of international meetup, unless it was in Europe or something, but I think the US would be out of the question (Just too pricey for plane tickets, plus hotels, insurance, travel, etc...)
But if it was to happen, I'd think that making it anything big and official, like renting out a venue, would be a bit crazy. Maybe just all meeting up in a park or something, letting our dinosaurs loose, just sitting around on the grass, chatting together... It'd be like one of the Youtube Gatherings, but with robotic dinosaurs.
Or of course, if he Walking With Dinosaurs stage show ever comes back to town...

Small two or three people meetups occur an a pretty regular basis, and are a lot easier to pull off. But a big, many-people meetup seems almost impossible, like it follows a logarithmic scale (I know, more math . . . ). Getting three people together may be ten as hard as getting two. But getting even four people together seems like it's a hundred times as hard.
Realistically, for the US, if you split the difference and picked a place in the middle of the country, and you planned it out for a year away, it would still run $600-800 per person just for airfare, lodging, and events. That's more than the cost of buying an RB . . . International airfare could easily push you over $2000. The big question is, where to find a bunch of people willing to spend that much money.
-
Math, Math Math, I can't get away from Math, and then Bob, via link up with Mike has to rear it's ugly head with all these figures. Geesh, it gets very scary when you add up all those figures.. I can't even drive let alone come up with that kind of money and it looks as if going away for a weekend would be out of the question as I have too many critters to take care of anyway . I am sure I would have to fly to some point in the Midwest or beyond and that is just too expensive. :o For me it has to be here on the fourms or something similiar, I can't even take a vacation, my "pets" come first and I can't leave them for more than 12 hrs by themselves, Cats may be able to exist by themselves for as long as a day by leaving out food and water, but my dog is not going to let herself out and back in and I would not leave her outside un attended. Oh well, I can allways dream....that is was happens when you live with Bigfoot for so long, you get used to being a hermit of sorts.

Funnily enough I could probably work out a venue (NW London just outside the M25) through work quite easily, it's just all the organisation that seems a bit daunting ..............
There are still Aibo meets occasionally in the UK and I'm hoping to attend one this summer, maybe if I can get some idea of how that works we could see if people were interested? I'm not promising anything here, mind, but I'm happy to give it some thought. :D

How about we find a rich pleo owner and go on his yot and have a pleo cruse around the world. ;D Than its all mine >:D
-
Comaro you're too funny! I'm not ritch but I am a pleo-owner. If I were ritch and had a yacht, I'd fit as many of you and your pleos as I could and we'd all go exploring. Still something about combining pleos- especially other people's pleos- and water makes me nervous. I like Crewella's idea of meeting in Lundon- lots of safe concreet or some other surface for the dinos to romp on. It would probably get media attention. Sadly for me, writing for an online newspaper doesn't produce UK air-fare but hey, in two years, who knows? *gets big-eyed dreamy look* Anything's possible.

Sounds like a good idea. Any info would be handy, since I know nothing about organising any event that doesn't begin at my house and end up at some park. Just outside the M25 does't sound too bad.

I'm in the north of england (newcastle) so london would be impossible! but if theres any notherners we could try and arrange something
-
I think there should be some sort of Pleo Convention or Ugobe Expo! Maybe on multiple places such as the US, UK and Australia. :) (I live in the US)
-
The AIBO folk have meetings annually, one on the west coast (SAAG near Sacramento) East coast (various) and UK (Various). They turn out 5-20 folk and maybe could accomodate some PLEO folk as there is really a lot of commonality. I drive up to SAAG and maybe RWM could drive down and a few SF Pleos could attend.
I could ask Bruce (the host of SAAG in late September) if that would be feasable.
-
Sounds good to have a meet like that, but I do not drive and would have to spend hours on a bus, the plane takes a big detour and is expensive. I am sure the members who live in the Santa Rosa and SF area could probably attend. If Baby doesnt work anymore, I don't know if it would be much fun for me, but I do have a whole other herd of loveable Ugobes. Good luck guys if you do get together.
