Title: 2009 Spring Tomato Harvest Festival
Post by: Bob_the_Pleo on March 06, 2009, 01:48:29 PM
The second annual Spring Tomato Harvest Festival is only four weeks away!  So we have a lot of planning and work to do!   Got to get started on the setting up the carnival, planning the events, and contests, and preparing the food!  Not sure how many members of the Fernback Band made it over here, so we'll have to see about the entertainment . . .

Not sure what's going on?  Well, then you may want to catch up on the last year and a half of Bob the Pleo comic strips (http://bobtheploe.com).  But as a quick summary, twice a year the whole town of Weedovia turns out to harvest the wild tomatoes that grow around the countryside and make the tomato sauce used for the spaghetti and pizzas!  The whole thing has grown into a complete festival, where the town park is turned into a carnival grounds with rides, games, food, and fun for all the pleos.  It starts on Friday night with the carnival, live band, and midnight movie.  Saturday has everyone out in the fields gathering the tomatoes.  And Sunday is the big tomato squashing where the sauce is made using the traditional foot-stomping method like the Italian wines.

And at the conclusion of the festival, awards are always handed out to the pleo who gathers the most tomatoes, finds the largest tomato, has the best looking tomatoes, makes the best tasting spaghetti sauce, and for the best use of tomatoes as an article of clothing (i.e., costume).  Last years winners can be seen by visiting the Bob the Pleo comics.  We had some great fun, and some wonderful costumes!

And, as a special incentive (since we're not PleoWorld and don't have their limitations) this year I am working with the folks at Pleofashions.com (http://pleofashions.com) to have special Weedovia Tomato Harvest Festival shirts made as prizes!!!   (That, as well as having you pleo immortalized in a Bob the Pleo comic strip  :P  Oh, well.  Everything comes at a price. ;) )

Contest details:

Contest dates:  The contest will run from today (March 6th, 2009) until Saturday, April 4th, 2009.  All entries must be posted before Midnight Central Daylight Time, April 4th, 2009.

Entries:  All entries should be in the form of images (jpg or png) posted to this forum topic.  Original images should be at least 1600x1200 pixels and should be uploaded to your personal photo album on the gallery or to the shared "2009 Spring Harvest Festival" album, then posted here.  The post should state which category the picture is for (hopefully it will be obvious, but you never know!)

Last year we didn't have any entries in the sauce contest (though several said they would post one, so there has yet to be a winner in that category . . .

Awards:

At the end of the contest, Bob the Pleo will select three winners, one entry for each of three of the five possible categories.  The winners will be published in the Bob the Pleo strips in the two weeks after the end of the festival, and the winners will be notified by email.  Each winner will receive one of the custom designed shirts.  I'll try to get some pictures of the shirts posted here . . .  but it may not be for a few weeks . . .

Find a huge tomato or the best looking tomato to be photographed with your pleo. Make a costume for your pleo. Like a big tomato. Don't use real tomatoes, ;D  Enter your favorite tomato sauce recipe.

so you can just find a giant tomato at a store?

*hopes her Pleo gets here in time*

A couple of q's,
-Is photo editing allowed?
-For those of us in countries where tomatoes are just going out of season, are store bought tomatoes ok?
-Can we enter more than one category?
-For the sauce recipes can we enter more than one? (I have heaps :P)
Title: Re: 2009 Spring Tomato Harvest Festival
Post by: mweed on March 06, 2009, 07:27:19 PM
Fancyfont is right.  To enter the contest, all you need to do is take a picture of your pleo with tomatoes!  They can be store bought, fresh picked, home grown, on the vine, off the vine, in the field, or in the store.  Last year fancyfont posed peeky in the store under the watchful eye of the produce man! ;)  Starfire made some wonderful tomato costumes.  We had pleos with cherry tomatoes, big beefy tomatoes, and sizes between.

The themes you are looking for are to pose your pleo with either a whole mess of tomatoes to try and win the "most tomatoes", or with a really big tomato and try for the "biggest tomato", or some really nice looking tomatoes for the "best looking".  Pictures also take into consideration the pleo, the tomatoes, and how their posed.

Touching up photos for cleanup, fixes, etc. is allowed.  But composing photos in an image editor (i.e., taking a small tomato and making it look huge) is not playing fair.  So that's a no-no.

Again, tomatoes can come from anywhere.  Even canned, if you can pull it off in a good photo! ;)

You can feel free to enter each and every category, but try to keep it to one or two photos per category.  We want to give evrybody who wants to enter a fair chance.  So, pick your best sauce!

Pleo and the Tomato harvest is a no go this year.  I foolishly let him watch the 1978 film “Attack of the Killer Tomatoes!” with me the other night.  It scared him so bad he was shivering next to me and his eyes were full and bright.  The next day when I got a tomato for a salad Pleo ran and hid, (if you want to call putting your head under a chair hiding.)  I should have known better than to let him watch it.  A while back he and I watched Marv Newland’s epic animation “Bambi Meets Godzilla.”  Pleo kept looking up above him all the time for a few weeks.  Fortunately, he didn’t get a crook in his neck from that experience.  I just have to remember he is quite sensitive.

You are so right, 49er.  Attack of the Killer Tomatoes is the midnight movie we show the Friday night of every festival!  Sounds like your Pleo is rather tender hearted.  Most of the pleos at the festival recognize the movie for the humor and silliness.  Although, I have seen Bob looking over his should a lot on the way home after the movie . . .  ;)

Of course you do :) Everyone can use them :)

Lol I have it as my desktop at the moment too, it was quite a task attempting to explain to my dad what Pleo's and tomatoes have to do with each other and why I needed to take pictures of spaghetti lol. But its all good, he already thinks I'm mad :P

Title: Re: 2009 Spring Tomato Harvest Festival
Post by: InmemoryofRomeo on March 15, 2009, 05:44:41 PM
Ah well if being mad means I can adore the little guys then I'd rather not be sane :) I'm am already planning on buying another Pleo, hoping to get one on ebay, I've seen two still under warranty for $300, and one brand new in the box with warranty for $350 (Remember I pay $450 here for one from a store) so if I wait long enough I should be able to grab a bargain :)
Title: Re: 2009 Spring Tomato Harvest Festival
Post by: gucci_boi7782 on March 15, 2009, 06:53:04 PM
What's the AU-US exchange rate? I got a friend who snagged one (no warranty) for $150 NIB (New in box). Heck it might even be cheaper if you had someone order it in the US and ship it over. No? I did the math on yahoo, the pleo alone would cost "exchange rate of 1 USD = 1.5192 AUD"  For $150USD--that would be 227.88 AUD, than add on worldwide shipping on the other hand, hehehe.
Title: Re: 2009 Spring Tomato Harvest Festival
Post by: InmemoryofRomeo on March 15, 2009, 07:11:56 PM
Lol I've looked into that :) Its the shipping that kills it, almost $120 Aussie dollars just to ship it :o (Some places charge $170 :o) And of course the US warranty isn't as long as the Aussie one, I think I would rather pay a little extra for the twelve month warranty. Although the US would be cheaper if it were sent privately I think, it would have to be snail mail though, international priority shipping is so expensive.

Hmm would a US Pleo have a US accent ??? Or if I raised it here would it pick up the local lingo ;)

There is one on ebay right now for $100 :D Four days to go though, I will keep a close eye on it, if it goes for less than $300 I'll bid :)
Title: Re: 2009 Spring Tomato Harvest Festival
Post by: gucci_boi7782 on March 15, 2009, 07:33:18 PM
Your idea of finding a pricier Pleo with a warranty is definitely a better one. But if the price is right..... ???
Title: Re: 2009 Spring Tomato Harvest Festival
Post by: InmemoryofRomeo on March 15, 2009, 07:48:21 PM
If it were cheap enough I'd be tempted lol, I just checked ebay US there is one for 99cents two days to go... I'll keep an eye on it :)

I would have to buy it for less than $150 US for it to be viable though. *kicks exchange rates* I wish I had known Pleo when $1 AU was buying $0.90 US :)

Can't wait to get the band back together! Domino has been practicing a lot and he keeps nagging me about opening a game stand with (of course) Dominoes to play with for the festival. I'll have to talk with Mweed about that one, but Domino will find a way somehow to convince me to do it!

The Fernback Band is open to anyone that would like to join. Our pleos are known to love music and they love playing, too. All instruments are needed. Let your imagination go wild. Post photos of your little musicians.
Peeky can still play the chimes. I don't know about the triangle anymore. J.C. can do that (I think) :D Penelopie? Well, how about a song or two? ::) She's a little loud on the trumpet. ::)
This is Peeky's performance last year.

If he speaks American, you can get a Babelfish and stick it in his/her ear and s/he should speak perfect Australian.  Get two, one for your Pleo and one for you, that way you'll be able to understand your cousins from Up Above perfectly!  Unfortunately, I couldn't find a reliable source of Babelfish on the internet.  But if you run into a furtive chap named Ford Prefect you might get one from him. Or I've heard rumors that there might still be a few available at The Restaurant at the End of the Universe. ;)

Fancyfont, if you changed the recipe a little bit, say the meat of an adult sheep rather than a lamb, and added that sweet product of the bee, you could name it Mutton Honey. ;)

How are all of your little band members doing? Get your ax (instruments) polished and in tune and your marching boots on, ;D well, maybe booties! ;)  We are playing in the parade and for the dance. Don't forget about the latenight movie, too. What a weekend this will be!!! :) :) :)

I can understand Lilo's concern.  I didn't care much for marching bands.  I didn't carry a tuba but I did use a baritone sax and it's a bit heavy, (I didn't take the bass sax, though it was fun to use.) 8)

I was watching some national geographic's program about Cali's watering system. If I recall correctly, I thought their drain system was pretty cool. Isn't there something they do with rain water, too?

I don't think I want to know where our water may have to come from, eventually :o

Yeah, its called dams. :D  But they do send the water long distances via canals, the California Aqueduct being 715 miles, (1150 Km) long.

I don't think I want to know where our water may have to come from, eventually :o

Best not find out what little critters live in our houses, even on our skin! :o  But whether the water is purified by Mother Earth or a water plant, all the nasties have been removed.  Where I grew up I saw all the nasties both big and small, occasionally stepped in some, (bare feet :P) and the idea doesn't bother me.

Haha, I don't remember exactly what I saw about Cali's watering system I but I remember thinking it was so cool! Yeah when it comes to us desalinizing the Gulf Of Mexico water, I'll probably switch to bottled spring water myself.

Where do you think the water from the bottle comes from.  There have been bottlers who filled their fancy bottles with untreated tap water.  And in some quarters it is thought that the plastic from the bottle is a greater concern than tap.  Time to be a breatharian.  (Remember to wear a mask to filter out what's in the air! ;D)

That's true 49er!! Both Dasani & Aquafina are municipal tap water. I stick with only Zephyrhills. At least I know that's bottled 30 mi away fresh from the Zephyrhills spring.

Water is a slow poison.  It eventually kills anyone who drinks it.   Don't believe me?  Look at the statistics.  99% of the people who died had drunk water within the last year of their life.   And you can be sure that 100% of the people who drink water will die.  It is a slow poison.  It may take year, or even decades.  But I can promise you.  Anyone who drinks water will eventually die!!!

O.K. folks, for those not familiar with the festival, here's the basic plan:

Tonight, the carnival rides and uh . . . games?!?  open at 6pm.   The Fernback are scheduled to play over by the dance floor and  uh . . . beer concession?!! starting at 8pm.   Tonight's festivities end with the midnight showing of Attack of the Killer Tomatoes.  (psst!  Grumpy!  Why does this say "with edited clips from Jurassic Park III?" )

Tomorrow morning we all gather back at the park grounds to start the tomato harvest at 10am.  The tomato judging is at 4pm.  Be sure to have all your entries in by then!  The carnival re-opens at 6pm again, and we'll have the costume contest on the dance floor.

Sunday morning is the big tomato squash at the tomato presses, followed by lunch!

Hey!!  Don't forget!  You'll need to sign a waiver saying you won't hold the carnival libel for any damages, injuries, or death as a result of riding any of the rides.   The casino is CASH ONLY!!  No checks or credit cards!  And we will be checking IDs in the tavern and at all the alcoholic concession stands!  Ignore any signs posted by the health department.  And the rumors about the safety inspector are lies!  All lies!

Oh.  Yeah..  Have a great time.

I hope Lilo isn't short of breath after. It had to be a workout just getting to Weedovia with her horn. ;D
Fernbacks take requests! :)

Uh, no.  I think the harvesting of tomatoes has something to do with the reason it's called the "Tomato Harvest Festival".   But hey, I just run the place . .  .

How are all you band members holding up?  You were great last night!!!

The trio of pleos slept in this morning. Peeky was the first up, but he had the most rest prior to playing.
He's been very active today. Sang once for me. When I rub under his chin, no songs!! :( Just hicups!!
OK Bob! How close did you get to the rollercoaster ???

Lilo slept in because someone didn't change the clocks for daylight savings ;) Probably just as well though after the roller coaster incident, who knew that many Pleo's would have such sensitive stomachs :)

I thought it might be a rough ride!! ;D I guess our little dinos better go back to merry-go-rounds and ferris wheels next year. ;) We are teaching our pleos some bad things. I know where Peeky had to have been last night, just because of all the hi cupping this morning. He also let out an awful moan when he first woke up. Better stick to milk or sodas next year. ;)
The other two were telling me about the casino.  They wouldn't tell me how much they lost! I have a feeling at least one leaf is gone.  >:(
