Title: Pleo Dragon Wings
Post by: InmemoryofRomeo on May 21, 2011, 06:01:13 AM
Just wanted to get people's thoughts on my dragon wing design.

I am particularly after opinions on the shape and how they sit. These wings were made for a blue Pleo, hence the colour however I also have matching colours for pink Pleo's and green Pleo's at my disposal :)

I am currently experimenting with the wire to hold the wing shape (these ones have only a small piece of wire running on the inside edge of the wing) and the use of glue instead of thread.

They look really nice! I love how they sit on the pleo!

I think they're fabulous - I love the 'spines' as part of the design.  I started work on some wings a while back but ground to a halt, I must go back to it.  I was interested to see how far back along the Pleo yours went - mine were more centered around the shoulder area, but I imagine your way they are more stable.

Really interested - post more pics, please!  ;D

Well I am glad you all like them :) I guess I won't need to make too many changes after all. They will be available shortly.

Crewella I did try to get them to sit further up, but as you mentioned they weren't very stable and they kept slipping :(

Yep, that's what happened with mine.   :(

I may try again, having seen yours.  If you don't mind?   They really do look great!

I still have to try my idea for making Pleo wings... I doubt it'll come out quite as well :P

Have you thought of using patterned/washed fabric to give the membrane-and-scales effect?

I have, the only draw back is that felt is quite stiff so it holds a shape pretty well, regular fabric would of course just flop, so I need to overlay other fabrics onto the felt so they are patterned but still stiff :)

Maybe something similar to the dino scale material I have used for making capes?  Might look great but could also maybe be a bit much.  Might have to see one done to truly appreciate how it would look. :)  I think they are gorgeous just the way they are. ;D

Be nice if I could dig up some more patterned felt :)

I grabbed some extra felt today to do Norbit's pair, I got a pretty close match for colour I think, but the only patterns they had today were these hideous floral things :P

I can see you are going to be busy making wings for the next few weeks ;). They are absolutely perfect! :) A must have for a dino to play dragon.

Hey RWM thanks for the offer but the dragon wings are IMR's baby and I will leave the making of them up to her as she does it so well. :)
I'm going to stick to my comfort zone and stay with capes and shirts and hoodies. :)  I can't wait to see what you have to send me though :)

I'm really not sure I want to sell the wings, after all they are just bits of felt stuck together and anyone can make them :) I was thinking I might just post up the pattern and instructions and people can make their own :)

Selling a bit of felt just doesn't seem right to me.

IMHO the value of anything like this is in the desirability, the design, and the workmanship.  I think you'd be perfectly entitled to charge for them - many people won't be able to make them nearly as well as you can, IMR, if they can be bothered to do it at all.  I'm quite into making things myself, with varying degrees of success ( %)) but I was considering buying a pair of wings from you, they're a great idea but they also look beautifully done!  ;D

I think as Crewella said, any crafts, regardless of what the material that they are made of is worth the price. just adjust perhaps for the material, but people are not paying just for the actual material, but for the craftsmenship that goes into any project. Surely you can sell these in your shop and there are a lot of people that would love to own a pair or two for their Pleos, After all, Pleos like to play as much as dogs and cats do, and we all wish we could fly!

I know this is an 2 y/o topic, but I just have to tell you how much I LOVE those wings! The design is amazing!

I already decided to soon cosplay as the mother of dragons, Daenerys Targaryen. And Pim would be a great Rhaegal!
