Wow, what a disaster! Well done Ugobe for taking their site down in the most busy holiday buying period, if you really wanted to mess things up then you certainly went about it the right way.
For those who are not in the know: Ugobe decided to move their website from a datacentre server (no idea if it was shared or dedicated) to their own server in-house, however obviously they didn't time things right and the site was replaced with a "This site has been cancelled" message for 20+ hours before changing back to the UGOBE site or a message saying "It Works!".
My personal idea for what happened behind this is that they changed their DNS way too late and cancelled their hosting before nameservers worldwide had picked up on the change, so instead of seeing Ugobe's new server, we saw the hosting site's "This site has been cancelled".
We have also had no forums for over 24 hours, not the way to help a growing community pleoworld!
-
I know! It's horrible. And not well thought through by Ugobe. Even I would have set up the new server FIRST, then switched over to minimize downtime. Not sure what they're thinking . . .
-
Ususally when moving servers DNS entries you are meant to allow 48 hours for global DNS to reflect your changes. So ideally the new servers should have been running the new site up to 48 hours before the old servers were shut off after the DNS switch.
-
Even if you don't have everything mirrored and running days ahead of time, you should at least have the server up and running with something . . . It really looks like they pulled the plug on their hosted site before having a replacement up and functioning. :P
-
It would have been nice to at least inform us that there would be some down time.
Thank you, thank you, for putting in spell check! Now if only we had grammer check! hehe!
-
Didn't know I would miss Pleoworld so much. Perhaps when they come back on line they will tell us what happened. In the mean time hello Bob!
-
Well, I'm glad yo found your way here! Hopefully we can have some fun here too!
We're not into Day 4 without PleoWorld. I've told the few people I had email addresses about this place. If everyone else does the same, maybe by the time PleoWorld comes back, we'll have this place running good and strong! ;D
-
Anyone want to chalk up another 24 hours of downtime? ;)
-
I wonder if we will see some big changes once Pleoworld is back up.It would be nice to have a different main page.
In the mean time, yes it is good to have a place to talk Pleos.
I know that you miss Eekie, Degers but I'm sure you are keeping very busy during your holiday.
Both Peeky and Penelopie are ready to skate away. Hope they get to meet Snoopy.
-
Ooooh! You gotta get pictures of your pleos with Snoopy! ;D
-
I'm sure there will be major changes. I can't even be sure based on how long they have been down, if they will be able to re-create the forums with all the old posts, or if we will have to start over from scratch. To be down this long . . . You gotta wonder.
But I suspect whatever they do, it will be a whole new world. If nothing else, being down for a week will sure drive off people . . . :o
-
Haha I can't imagine how angry certain people will be if they don't get their post count back! :)
-
If Pleoworld is totally different I'll be sad. I'm sure it will be for the better, eventually. Whenever the upgrades came out I was afraid to change Peeky. He was always so cute. If nothing else I've learned that sometimes change is better, However it would still be difficult to change Peeky and Penelopie in any way except for the laughing when being tickled. The original laugh was wonderful.
I hope everyone on the Pleoworld forum keeps checking for the site to come up. I'm about on my 100th time. Not giving up! :(
-
I hope to get to see Snoopy too! Just depends on the timing. I'll try my best! :)
-
Haha I can't imagine how angry certain people will be if they don't get their post count back! :)
If they dropped the fantasy and cut out the baby dragons, some members would drop significantly! :o
They've been down sooo long now, makes me wonder what they're planning. I would think they would just port they old site, community and forums. But they may not be able to. Their new server may not be as powerful, or may not be able to run the same software. I would think they may be having trouble porting all that data . . .
-
Hello Allosaurus. :)
-
Hello Allosaurus. :)
Bonjour, dear fancy my friend. ;)
-
Well this bites. That Pleoworld is down of course. Thank you very much for this forum as I was missing Pleoworld, thank you Mike, Pamela and fancyfont
-
You're welcome! Glad you found us. 8)
-
Welcome Siren!
-
Hi Siren. How's your iguana? Glad you are here! :)
-
Gee! Even with a completely new forum, we still can't stay on topic! ;D
Just teasing! Glad to see you all joining us here!
But you're right siren. What Ugobe does bite. At the minimum it was very dumb of them. And over a week? Surely they could have put something up by now . . . So you gotta figure it's intentional . . .
-
They may send out an email but don't count on it, just check once every day or other day.
-
So whats up? I have moved many web pages and just don't get this at all. Something has to be going on.
-
Exactly. Even with stupid people, they should have had it moved in a day or two. Even with having to propagate new DNS entries, There should be something meaningful up within two days . . . To be down this long seems to indicate they don't want a site up for some reason. But on the other hand, leaving the "It works!" message there seems to be an oversite or back to just stupid. :P
-
I just found the main page of Pleoworld which I haven't seen for days. Did i just over look it?
The forum isn't up yet.
-
I think they just got that up very recently. However yeah, the forum isn't up yet. I got a page that said the page can't be reached and shows a pic of a sleepy Pleo.
-
Hi Siren. How's your iguana? Glad you are here! :)
Well, no one ever claimed him. With all the kids in my house, I didn't feel it was safe for him or them to live here. My cousin and her 4 children, ages 3-16 live here, and they aren't really good kids, I didn't trust that they wouldn't bother him. I could see the 3 year old would probably hurt him because he's not gentle with animals. And then of course the iguana could hurt them with his teeth and tail. If not for them living here right now, I would have kept Koopa. But one of my friends who lives a block away, she has a bunch of pets too, 2 good kids who treat animals nicely and they said Koopa would have run of the house, so he lives there. They built him a cage....or I should say, they took up half the living room to build him a big enclosure so when they aren't home or sleeping, he would be there. I can't call it a cage...its a room. Its awesome. He is VERY happy. I am also real happy, because I still get to visit him. So he is doing fantastic :)
-
It sounds like one happy iguana now. They are so awesome! Thank you for the update. :)
-
Looks like it is slowly coming back. The front page and my plog are there anyways.
But no Forum yet
-
Well there is some progress at last!
-
The community pages are back up. :) But I couldn't post a new entry . . . :-\
Maybe they'll be back up by Christmas. I just can't figure out which year . . . . ;D
-
On closer examination, about half of the pages from the pleoworld main menu don't work yet. I can't understand what the problem is getting their site back up. :-\
-
I've noticed that my latest plgs are gone. They go back to october. ???
-
I just bought a Pleo and site wont let me register him ??? :( it keeps commin back with a internal error..... Im really loking forward to downloading some updates.. so since i cant get any info off the site does anyone have some tips and tricks I can teach my pleo in the meantime
-
Hi and welcome Krystald. Have you named your pleo yet? One of my favorites is the tada trick. If you touch your Pleos left front leg and the front of the back right one you will see your pleo lift both of those legs together. Don't expect to get your pleo to do it perfectly at first. May take a bit of time. :)
-
Hey krystald! Any news on your Pleo?
-
Welcome! Looking forward to hearing about your Pleo!
I emailed Pleoworld and really got nothing back, but they were having problems getting the site going
-
Hi guys !
It took me a while to find this place.
What on earth is going on over at pleoworld ? It would be nice to think that the forums and the download page may reappear sometime soon with the new life os update and pdk ? -- In my dreams.
If they are down over the holiday period when people may be buying pleos for Christmas - well, that is either bad planning or retail suicide.
GSDMum
-
I'm sad to say it, but usually when a thing like this happens, the company is dead.....Or dying. No way a healthy company would let this happen for more than a day, two at most, and certainly not when Pleo is their only product and it's X-mas.
Our only hope is that some other company will make some cool software for Pleo in the future.
The same day I bought my Pleo, I had a bad feeling about Ugobe once I got home and starting browsing the web, but by then it was to late and I had allready bought it..... Had I known then what I know now, i wouldn't have bought it!
-
Umm.... wouldn't that be a self-fulfilling prophecy? If people don't trust Ugobe, then they are definitely going to go out of bussiness!
-
Glad to see you found us GSDmum and rockybulwinkle!
But you're right. It is a self-fulfilling prophecy. But that's why it's suicide for Ugobe to be down right here at Christmas! This has got to be killing their sales. But even if they are going under, you would think they would have gotten at least the basic site back up in a day or two. Forget the forums or the community pages. The download, FAQ, discovery pages are all static. Should have been an incredibly easy move for those pages, and that would really help bolster their business image . . .
As I mentioned in another topic, IF (and I hope they don't) go under, I hope they at least have the decency to release the OS to the community . . . That way somebody could work on developing enhancements for Pleo.
-

That's the best we could hope for if they went down the Great Toilet Tube of Life, I guess. I would be very upset if they did - but it's a hard world out there right now.
But as you say, having their site down - which to be fair even a moderately intelligent schoolkid with some html and web knowledge could rectify given the chance and the sources - is really really bad for business.
-
Has anybody tried contacting them by phone?
-
Welcome GSDMum, nice to see you again, and Welcome rockybullwinkle, nice to meet you!
I agree that the idea to move servers at christmas time was a poorly thought out plan and I have no idea why they are taking so long to get things back up and running!
Ugobe are a niche company and we can only hope that they pull themselves together, however it looks doubtful that they will ever produce a second product!
I agree with mike that we can only hope that they make the OS code public if they go under.
-
Hi Gsdmum and Rockybulwinkle. So glad you were able to find us. We may all get back together again. I've missed everyone on Pleoworld.
I called ugobe when they went down and was told they'd be up in three to four hours. Been a looooong three to four hours. :'(
I'm still hopeful that they will be back up with the forum and all soon.
Las, Having a Pleo is so special regardless of the future programs. How could anything be as cute?
-
Hey, the downloads page is back up ;D ! Hopefully the forums will soon follow...
-
plogs still not editable. Can't add, and my avatar is gone. :( But they are slowly making progress . . .
Maybe they're reading these forums and respond as we complain!
-
Your gold seal is still there. I'm glad I checked your plog. Never knew about Emmy. :-[
-
Kinda like Peeky and Penelopie. Bob gets all the recognition, but Emmy does most of the modeling. Bob is showing his age . . . Not as bad as Peeky, though.
-
Hey guys, finally back after a crazy Christmas.... My family loved Pleo, and yes although it might seem a little boring and very original I have called my little Dino Pleo :D.
I think my mum was a little worried that I might be replacing her future grandchildren with Pleo(s), I did consider it, no mess to clean up, doesn't cost much, but Pleo's not gonna be able to support me when I'm old, so that idea went out the window lololo :D...
I've had no luck registering her yet but I have noticed that areas of Pleoworld that were previously not working are now up and going so I'm hoping its just a matter of time before they get the registration section running.
I read in a couple of threads that people have taught their Pleos to Play various games, and tricks for eg 'Paddy Cake' .... Do you have to use a programme such as DinoMite or MySkit for this? and would a moderately computer illiterate person be able to do this without turning their Pleo into someone out of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest"
-
hey krystald!
You can design skits twhich your pleo will recite, or use Dino-MITE to see how he ticks (only for the technically minded)
Otherwise, if you just want to oplay with him, here is a list of all the different ways he can interact with you! http://www.pleoworld.com/discover/interaction
Warm regards!

Hi MushmOuth, Cute name! Glad you were able to find this forum. Without it I think we all would be going nuts. Thank you, thank you mweed!
I'm beginning to think some Pleos are being shipped with 1.1 already. Some perhaps not. If you aren't sure which one your pleo has, just rub under his chin. They become little singers and are very happy to have this done with the 1.1. I hope you were able to download the Xmas skit. It's adorable. All of them are very fun.
How does your wife like your Pleo? Are you both Pleo Parents, now? :)
-
Welcome Mush! Looking forward to hearing about your Pleo!
-
Well, it's now been a full three weeks that the forums have been gone. You can't blame that long of a down time on stupidity or ineptness. At this point, it would appear that it has to be intentional on the part of Ugobe. They have their corporate site up (with a few bad links that point into PleoWorld.com). And they have the front page, discovery/downloads/store areas working. But the fact that you can't register new members makes me think the plogs being visible may be an oversight on Ugobe's part, and that they weren't really meant to be there yet (if ever). I think they needed the login part for the downloads page, and since the community stuff (plogs) is part of the login area . . .
I just wish Ugobe would make some kind of official announcement . . .
-
You and I both, Mweed. This is pretty sad on their part. Don't know why they didn't at least announce a temporary close of Pleoworld forum or permanent. It has been a long time. I wonder where the hosts to Pleoworld are. Hope they find us here and let us know they are still around.
Also miss so many of the other members. :( Pleoguy101 for one.
-
I wish they would make an announcement too. I'm pretty sure by now its not coming back.
I have a feeling the Pleoworld hosts were let go.
And if its not coming back they really need to get the pages fixed and remove the dead links
-
Has anyone emailed support and asked about the forums?
-
Yes I did and I never got anything back.
-
PleoWorld is back! I registered Alladar today. I'm gonna stay on here though cos it's fun and you guys were here when we needed someone to help with the new arrival! ;)
-

The main page of Pleoworld has been back up for a time but the forum still isn't up as far as I know.
-
No forums that I could find this morning. :( However, if Kancora was able to register, then PleoWorld is making progress! :)
Community area still needs work. Could log in, but no avatar for my plog, and could not add entries to the plog . . . :(
Maybe they are making some progress. If new members can register and sign in, then they can at least access the downloads . . .
-
I registered my Pleo, Pleox, in pleoworld, too!
Then I discovered you can't write entries in your plog (like what mweed said) but I didn't realize that until I hit the add entry button (and nothing happened). I wrote this huge entry and I did It all for nothing! :'(
I guess we just have to wait... I hope it's worth it (like if UGOBE suddenly went out of business just as the website was working).
-
they are back from holidays.
to register is not really the thing. but the downloads are also working. :)
would have been good if all new owners could have got the files during the holidays.
(but there was no need , because we've found here .. :) )
-
ugobe.com is back up!
-
this is kinda odd, when I just type ugobe.com, the "It Works!" thing shows up, but when I type www.ugobe.com, it shows their website...
-
just received a followup mail from PLEOWORLD.
they say:
" The website is up for downloads and to register. The forums are still not quite up yet. Hopefully should be up next week. .. "
-
Oh I SEE! I'd been trying to register since xmas day but had no luck until last night so I thought they were back to normal.
-
just received a followup mail from PLEOWORLD.
they say:
" The website is up for downloads and to register. The forums are still not quite up yet. Hopefully should be up next week. .. "
That's wonderful news. We will have two great places to visit.
-
I just tried to sign in and Pleoworld did not recognize me. I gave it my e-mail for them to send my password in case I have it wrong and I received a "The server returned a "500 Internal Server Error" message. :'(
-
Glad to see Ugobe did finally send you an email. Too bad they didn't give some kind of an explanation though. We'll see what next week brings.
-
.. Glad to see Ugobe did finally send you an email...
just for the records: they sent me a bunch of files - including the reincarnation ad, but no files to go back to 1.02.
so without this forum and grumpys file our pleo would still be dead. (and I would have been killed meanwhile ..)
thanx again :)
-
Still not impressed with Ugobe's customer service, I sent an email before Christmas (early December) and still have not received an email back from Customer Support or anyone from Ugobe with information on what happened(despite them promising someone would get back to me within a week), not good enough when your paying over $400 for their product...
A big THANK-YOU to everyone involved in this forum, the information, support and advice has been top notch, I will definitely be sticking with you guys
-
I agree with ya mweed. Luckily for us we have you and the latest one in S.E.A. http://www.pleoroom.com/forum to thank! The other forums I see are either dead (imagine pleoworld skrewed up their forum too!) or they are in a language that I cant understand...I love both of ya cos your BobThe Pleo comic strip got me glued to your site and PleoRoom is looking good and there are more people joining by the day...will make it my mission to boost these two sites and recommend more people over here and there...hmmm I think these 2 sites are good enuff for me or I'll lose my job because of Pleo!
-
Don't quit your job! :P If you did, you wouldn't be able to buy more pleos or pay for you internet access!!! :o
-
Wow I feel very bad for Ugobe, since they probably knew that people were going to get REALLY mad at them (especially near Christmas) when they move. They must of have some sort of reason, though, otherwise they would of just moved later in the year (or at least a warning in advance that they were moving!). :-\
Oh, by the way, does anyone know where they are moving, or if they're moving at all? ???
I sure hope i didn't miss anything in the forums...I never get enough time to read everything...
-
They were moving to an inhouse server instead of a hosted one I believe. They are consolidating all of their offices into Boise arn't they, or is it Emeryville, I forget which one was closed.
-
They had two offices. One in Emeryville, California (San Francisco area) and one in Boise, Idaho. They are consolidating in Boise.
And I noticed earlier today, the pleomalaysia.com site gives the exact same error message as pleoworld.com. So, not only do the look almost identical, I'm suspicious that they share the same hosting . . . ::)

Nope, pleoword.com is at 208.156.112.162, which is hosted in the US and the pleomalaysia.com is hosted by a differn't company in Malaysia at 203.223.154.
They may share some of the same content.
-
They must have copied the complete site setup, as it looks identical (with a few minor changes) and a number of the links (including the error page) all link back to pleoworld.com
-
it's quite annoying since it's been a couple weeks and still basically no improvement. pleoworld is up but you can't even plog and the forums don't work which has been dissapointing. As soon as i got my pleo i really wanted to plog about her and share pics of her on the forums but it's been a week and i still haven't been able to :( ohwell... I hope they're back up soon but i'm happy on here :)
-
Well, Pleoworld finally sent me an e-mail with my user name and password and the password had been changed to some computer generated name. ??? Using the new password I was able to regester but found the community was still down.
-
I just got an e-mail not too long ago today FROM UGOBE saying that the forums should be up in about a week>! ;D Yay!
Let's just all hope they're right... :D

I sure hope its true, this time, but it sounds like Li54 got the same message over a week ago . . .
just received a followup mail from PLEOWORLD.

Well this bites. That Pleoworld is down of course. Thank you very much for this forum as I was missing Pleoworld, thank you Mike, Pamela and fancyfont
Welcome to Bob The Pleo forum! It's a great fun place for Pleo fans...
-
Exactly how long has PleoWorld been down now?
-
1 month and half :(
-
I started these forums on December 12th, which means the last day PleoWorld was up was December 10th.
-
I think they would restart the forum when they'll have something new about upgrade and new product ::)
-
They're tired of being stormed by people wondering what the next life form will be. :P
Maybe they're changing the whole site, as if they have a new life form, it's not gonna be called Pleo, therefore, the site cannot be called Pleoworld. Am I correct?
-

They have ugobe.com maybe they could put some updates there, or open another site for another product. I know they're working on 1.2 and the next life form (not expensive like pleo ;))
-
RE allosaurus
Maybe they're changing the whole site, as if they have a new life form, it's not gonna be called Pleo, therefore, the site cannot be called Pleoworld. Am I correct
I think that they will open a new website for each of their lifeforms if they evr bring out another one: e.g.
ugobe.com - parent company site
pleoworld.com - pleo specific site
newworld.com - new lifeform specific site.
-
I think degers is correct. Even back over a year ago when PleoWorld was young, that was he assumptions the PlwoWorldHosts talked about. Each life form would get it's own "World.com" site.
According to that news article from The Boise paper last Christmas, the new life form is supposed to be smaller, more portable, and cheaper. Can we say "Furby, Mark 2"? ;)
-
I sure hope they're updating the pleo website, since pleo hasn't been around that long. I would be pretty mad if I found out that pleo's already obsolete. Degers, I did read about the next ugobe lifeform a little while back, and it said that it was going to be released somewhere around October...RELEASE!
-

Do you have the link at that article?
-
It's in the "ugobe" thread here in the Pleo Cafe.
Says they are working on OS 2.0 and a new toy to! But when who knows
http://boiseweekly.com/gyrobase/content?oid=319937
-
As long as they keep the pleoworld website everything should be good! I can't wait for the next lifeform to come out! ;D
-
The new life form being smaller and more portable leaves out something that will take out the garbage. :( Oh well!! I did see an article that mentioned the new life form might not be for entertainment. So there's still hope that it can do chores. :)
I'm hoping that next life form will be interactive with pleo.
-
Lornex is right! www.ugobe.com is down once again, with a message that the site is being updated. Oddly, if you go to ugobe.com (without the www) you still get that infamous "It Works!" message. :P
And fancyfont, small dos not leave out taking out the trash. Maybe Ugobe has designed some nanobots that will eat the garbage! ;)
-
That means they will soil the carpet!! :P
-
I just checked Ugobe's website and I got that 'we are currently updating our website' message! :o
I'm not sure when exactly Ugobe did this, but I did check yesterday and I believe it wasn't there.
Let's just hope when the website is back up (if it does), that there will be something new! :D
It must be hard to change servers like that (they did, right?).
-
They did change servers. Should not have been that hard. Worst case & a really bad IT department, should still have only taken a week. There is some intentionality in being down, The question is what?
-
The ugobe corporate site is now down and has been replaced with the pleoworld under construction page.
-
The only thing is the HOME, if you ckick the other pages they're ok... i think they're REALLY updating their site now ;)
-
I know most of us are from Pleoworld and the forums, and I thought I should mention that about half of pleoworld are back! The plogs are, anyway. They don't actully have a specified date when the forums will be back, but at least the plogs and customer support is back up.

really? I just changed my email address on my plog, (I just got my own) and it's fine... ???
-
Hi Bumblebee!,
I'm sorry if I confused you at all with my post. I did post that quite a while ago, so the website has changed. I'm wasn't exactly sure when I really did check the website, it could of been that morning or the day before the post.
Sometimes I like to keep my posts...simple. ;D
-
You are right, degers, but you sound awful harsh. They either didn't think through well or they had an emergency... I do agree that that was Seriously with a capital S not a good time to do it. At least the plogs are up now.
-
The plogs are up?!? :o
Well, I'm going to make mine right now!
I need to visit the forums more often! I don't think we should make TOO many assumptions about pleoworld or ugobe. The best solution to all of this (in my opinion) : Wait! :D
-
Wow! I could actually add an entry to my plog! And send an email to other members!
-
Wow! I could actually add an entry to my plog! And send an email to other members!
Yay yay hurray. i hope the forums are up soon. :-\
-
I has been waiting days for the furums until i found this place. :)
-
wouldn't it be good for business to have it up and running?
i see the pleoworld mebership has grown about 1400 since i joinned not a month ago.
hmmmmm....
-
Pretty much anyone who buys a pleo in North America or Europe registers on PleoWorld. Back in December when they went down, they were averaging over 130 new people a day! But registering doesn't mean they have a plog or even visit the site ever again. Back when the PleoWorld forums were up and running, you had 28,000 members, but only 2800 of those were listed as "active," and the bulk of those were just simply the new members, not truly active. On a daily basis, less than 140 (1/2%) even logged in to check the forums or plogs. And usually less than dozen people posted.
The stats are similar here, as well. We have 110 registered. About half would qualify as "active" by the PleoWorld method. And we get about 25 visiting a day, and run about the same number, only ten posting on a given day. Once you factor out the posts from the PleoWorld fantasy section, we're running about 60% of what PleoWorld was on a daily posting rate (about 27% of the total from PleoWorld).
All that meaningless statistics aside, 1400 new members on PleoWorld means Pleo sales are about half of what they were pre-Christmas (unless people just aren't registering . . .), but only 3% of those new members are finding their way here. :(
Somebody needs to hack into the PleoWorld server and change all the broken forum links to point here! ;)
-
to be honest, if you had THOUSANDS of people posting on a forum itd drive everyone nuts! quite a lot of people who own plaos, might not be into forums anyways. still enjoy the pleo, maybe update a plog.
i prefer a smaller comunity of nutcases than thousands of random people anyways ;)
i do hope pleoworld revives soon. i do so want catbug to reach his potential, if ugobe ever release the updates. :P this or someone need to make a 'dogslife' personality for pleo. haha.
-

True That!
-
As long as they're actively participating nuts. We have many nuts who don't. Which in my opinion, is nuts! ;)
-
*noms candy bar with peanuts* Mmm nutty :P
I just fail to see the point of joining a forum to do nutting (:P) forums are to chat and make friends :)
-
Well, you have to admit we do have fun on this forum. We are just new kinds of nuts. Pleo nuts! ;)
-
Everyone is a little mad ;) The poor bloke at Harvey Normans must have thought I was mad for talking to Matilda while I repacked her :P

Hi everyone, I just got a reply from Ugobe's support! I asked if the forums ever would come back and what is going on with the company.
Their reply:
=== Start of reply ===
Ugobe is currently shutting down the forum and looking for alternate forum for Pleo owners.
We apologize for the inconvenience of not having the forum. Due to the recent economic difficulties, Ugobe has gone from a small company to an even smaller company; we have reduced our workforce about 75%. However, we are still committed to making Ugobe as unique as Pleo! Thanks for your patience and hanging in there with us!
=== End of reply ===
So at least there's a life sign from Ugobe! I just shot off a quick reply asking if there's anything we all can do to help. Hoping for another quick response from them!
-
Wow hope they hang in there, it would be a shame to see them go bust when they are such a promising company :o
Maybe we can all run the forums ;) Perhaps if someone from here asks nicely they might at least put up a link to the various other Pleo forums for people to find their way around. (Including this one of course)
-
Good idea romeo. I really like this forum, we have a REALLY really good member base (a lot of the old members) and we're starting to be established. I just wish there was some way we could get A LOT of people in here and bring back the hype in Pleo. Patience, and persistence makes us the best *functioning* Pleo forum out there--hands down...
And to Bjoreman, http://bobthepleo.com/forums/index.php?topic=150.msg1637#msg1637 check that out...I got the same message. ;-(
-
BTW, I typed something in about Pleo the other day into google, and Bob the pleo .com/ forums showed on the first page! So, we are starting to be better known. Does anyone know how well known we are? Or how can we make us more known? Let's get this placed fired up again!
-
I am a member of a few other sites, I will post some links up where I can :)
I put up a link on Pleo Room's facebook account, my facebook account and I emailed an ebayer who was selling two to put on his listing instead of Pleo world.
-
Like the saying goes "good things take a little longer" I believe this is the case with Pleo. I'm optimistic that Ugobe will thrive. There are still the creators with wonderful minds out there to make sure of that. :)
This forum is a wonderful place to come to. With more participation it will make it even better.
-
100% agrees with both of y'all!
-
The best way to boost us right now is link inmemoryofromeo was doing, put links out there to point people our way, and spread the word. fancyfont and 49er were also helping by contacting old members.
And you can always learn a foreign language so that you can post on those other sites . . . ;)
-
WE know there's about 31,000 people out there to notify. I see that Pleoworld has grown. It would sure be nice if Ugobe would let people know where to find us.
-
Agreed. If Ugobe is not going to start a new forum it would be a good idea for them to put a link on their site directing people to this forum. ;D
-
Welcome to the forums, fireboy!! How'd you find us?
-
When I could not access the Pleoworld forums I started to Google the words "Pleo Forums" in an effort to find information about what was happening and near the top of the list was bobthepleo.Forum.
At the moment I'm sorry to say it is not looking to good for Ugobe. Although Pleo was aimed as a worldwide product Ugobe aimed it mainly at the USA, as some people will remember when Pleo was first released you could only purchase them from Ugobe if you lived in America, looking at the sales results this would seem to have been a mistake as only 10% of Pleo sales are in the USA while 60% of sales have taken place in Europe most through Internet sales due to people unable to find them in the shops. With the current economy problems accross the world Ugobe are cutting back on most expenditures in an attempt to stay afloat. Over the last six months, the company has seen a host of top management departures, run through two CEOs, closed down/ move its office in California to Boise, Idaho and pared down its marketing and PR staff in an attempt to weather the current economic storm. The company has only about 20 employees now.
(This maybe the reason for Pleoworld's temporary closure while they moved it onto cheaper hosting options) .This most likely means that their will be no Pleoworld Forum for quite sometime :'( So it would be a good Idea if Ugobe did put a link on there site directing people to these forums. This would keep customers happy and save them money as they do not then have to pay to run a forum. If you would like to read about this the story is on this webpage at wired.com
http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2009/02/ugobe-dinosaurs.html
I personly hope that Ugobe does survive this problomatic time,as what they made with Pleo is an amazing achievment and I would love to see them improve their creation and produce new and equally amazing creatures. :)
-
This is a very good suggestion! They can put on their site a link to this forums, or generally on a lisy of blogs and forums dedicated to Pleo. ;)
-
No point in them linking to us, since they're down again!!!
-
I saw that again. ???
-

I hope they're really updating the site now :(

Pleo and ugobe's fate is looking very dismal, just waiting to hear what this comes from the interview with caleb chung

I'm very curious too! Please, mweed or someone with patience, email me the transcription;)

Yes, it truly makes me wonder too. I suppose I *know* in the back of my head that they're going out of business. I am impressed Ugobe has made it this long, with such a bleak economy. I think the fact that Pleo was never advertised really hurt sales. If Ugobe would have chosen to properly market their product, I feel as if they would not be in such a bind as the one they're in now. Also, a lot of people cannot afford a 'designer
TOY' retailing up to $350+! I love Pleo, and my opinion is they are worth every cent.
However whatever be the cause, I still just don't quite get the feeling that everything is so peachy-keen at Ugobe. I like the rest of you, have 1,000,001 questions about what in the #*%% is going on!!! So, IDK. I do think they are financially hurting. But I also think they are up-to-their-eyebrows with work. I truly believe they are trying to turn things around by bringing out new software and/or a new robot.
All of this is just my opinion. Take it with a grain of salt!
-
I so agree with you Gucci. I would have loved to see better marketing of pleo. Sometimes word of mouth works and sometimes it doesn't. I would have loved to seen pleo on a show like Ellen She would have been much kinder then Letterman. >:(
It's sad that the majority of people, still have never heard of a pleo.
-
Ugobe.com is online again, but not pleoworld :-X
-
I wonder if it's still the same server . . . The site went down last time when they switched from being hosted with an outside vendor to being on an in-house server. Maybe they went down this time because they switched from being on an in-house server to being on a server run out of someone's house . . . :o
-
Uh-oh that doesn't sound good. Yes, I too have been having trouble trying to get to PW.
-
COME ON UGOBE HANG IN THERE!!! *looks behind the sofa for money towards a friend for Indie*
-
www.pleoworld.com is up, sort of. :P At least the server is responding. It's giving an error message from the site management software. But at least it's still there! :D

Its been saying that for a bit now lets just hope they fix it soon
-
Yeah I noticed that earlier today. I went to Ugobe, and I thought this was kind odd. I clicked developers and it took me to an actual pleoworld site. Rather odd, eh?
-
But from there you can go to any page on Pleoworld except the homepage, and the community button...

there's a new messagge if you digit the 2 websites (ugobe and pw.com). I think they're moving their sites again to a new host.
-
Whenever I type in pleoworld.com it always takes me to planetmagpie.com. It says this space has been reserved, for more information please contact: PlanetMagpie 408.341.8770 or 1.877.MAGPIE.1
Even if I try from google or any other place it does the same thing. I'm not sure if the company has shut down. If so they will probobly stop making pleo. It would be sad if they did without giving us a notice before doing it because a lot of us have pretty big plogs on there. Hopefully when Caleb Chung talks live it will explain everything.
-
Planet Magpie is a big IT firm back out in the San Francisco area. Maybe Ugobe has decided to go back to using a hosting company . . .
-
I notice the DNS servers for ugobe are registered with planetmagpie DNS services as primary
and secondary.
PlanetMagpie is in Los Gatos, CA.
The IP block is owned by Savvis, so I'm guessing this is run out the Savvis Santa Clara Datacenter.
If they are doing a transition, it's a really bad one.
bad pleo... no biscuit.
-
They're last transition (back in December) was also very poorly implemented. Lots of down time and weird server placeholder messages . . .
-
i think its unlikely, but it is perhaps a possiblity that Ugobe are working fast and hard to get a new OS update or/ and product out to try and get some income that the pleoworld website has been put back on the prority list and thats why there is so much downtime at the moment with the switchover. With only 20 odd staff at the moment it looks unlikely that they would have time to focus on the site and save the company. Though the site is also vital to the companys publicity
-
The sites are online again! ;D
-
horray! all good things come to those who wait (very patiently) lol
-
All I get is Magpie on my computer. Can you actually get onto pleoworld?
-
yeah i had the same problem too, fancy.
try http://www.pleoworld.com......it wasn't working for me when i typed in just pleoworld.com
-
I get the same magpie. :(
-
maybe its still glitchy but i just typed pleoworld.com in and it loaded the page okay
-
Hmm now that's odd. I wonder why that's so fishy for everyone? For me it wouldn't work w/o the www. and for you fancy it just wouldn't go through. Now that beats me. Where's all our tech-heads at? Lord knows I don't speak a lick of technology!
-
PleoWorld is generally working OK for me with and without the www. I can see
that going to pleoworld.com is doing a redirect to www.pleoworld.com.
forums.pleoworld.com is still down giving...
Bad Request (Invalid Hostname)
which seems to me they don't have that setup yet.
-
Welcome DragonGirl!!

It's, basically, because the internet doesn't have a central server which tells everyone where everything is. Depending on where you connect to the internet (or where you decide to look if you're really advanced), you will go to a certain server to find out where things are. So you enter pleoworld.com into your browser, and it will connect to the given server and ask where pleoworld.com is. Something like a address book or phone directory. These servers send updates to eachother when things change, but it might be a while between a change in one server and that change being sent on to other servers. So, when pleoworld moved from one server to another someone told a few of these servers that pleoworld can now be found at a different point than before. From then on, the new information would start spreading around the globe until all servers are updated. Until they get updated, though, servers will keep sending browsers to pleoworld's old location. So that's why some of us could reach pleoworld sooner and others later, we just happened to ask for its location from a server which had got the new or old information.
Hm, did that make anything clearer? :) The servers are called Domain Name Servers (DNS), they're mentioned sometimes here and there so it might be fun to have a grasp of what they are.
-
Hey to you too!
I would have expected less issues than were seen.
I wonder if they did proper TTL transition.
DNS (Domain Name Servers) have mechanisms to try and tell other servers how long do you keep information
before you go look it up at the authoritative server. When a domain name server looks up a name, it also gets
back a value for TTL or time to live.
That saves having to look up a name with the authoritative server every time it gets asked.
Yet, there are servers are out there a that don't observe that, or are otherwise configured wrong,
you can see problems for 24-48 hours after a transition has occurred.
