Title: Another Pleo Makeover #4 a work in progress
Post by: RedwoodsMama on March 12, 2011, 08:14:22 PM
Well if you have one Pleo or more than one Pleo, at some point you may need to help that Pleo with issues such as self esteem and if they suffer physical ailments such as "droopy Neck syndrome", or have a broken leg, bad skin , or just fading skin, you may decide to give them a little help with a "pleo makeover". some get partial makeovers, and others are so bad they need "full body lifts" and this is the fourth Pleo Makeover I have done so far. This one is a work in progress that I just started about two days ago, It is not complete, as there are allways other little details that take time to complete, such as more spots, and highlights, and of course, the toenails! NO self respecting Pleo of myne goes out the door to greet the public without good color on their toenails, it is like not having your hair done or having lipgloss or lipstick. ( If you are a female of course....)
The first photo is of the first three that was taken this past Decemeber, Nova has a broken neck so she got a full body makeover as did Little 45 whos skin was in terrible condition when I got him and his tail is bandaged as it was about to fall off and there was nothing else I could do for him short of chopping his tail off......not an option beleive me. And Argyle, Gumble's blind brother, he just needed some self esteem brought to life to help him overcome his shyness and make him feel more comfortable, The last photos are all of the newest Pleo member of the family a lost cousin of Gumble and ARgyle who just showed up before the Tusnamis after the horriffic Earthquake in Japan, and luckily he didn't get washed out to sea in the process!
He is almost done, but not quite but here is a sneak peek of how he will look when complete.

If you look closely you can see in photo number two there is color missing that is added
in photo #6 in eye area.

I love the closeup look of his eye and color  arouond his eyes the most. :)

He is looking so lovely already! :)  You've done a great job on him RWM.  He looks awesome.  I love the way you have done around his eyes too.  And the speckles are perfect on a pleo.

If I'm honest I wasn't so keen on the darker colours you first used, RWM, but you're right - that yellow around the eyes looks lovely.  I liked your last make-over best, but I now like this one even better!  Good job!  ;D

Thanks guys, I don't mind critisicm, it is how you learn. I like the lighter color better too, I just experiment and seeing the colors on the Pleo Rb and how they are done kind of helps too. I prefer lighter myself now to dark, and I would like to redo Nova at some point and also Little 45, he is my next project. Just have to remove color without damaging any areas.

allright I got busy again because I was stuck inside indoors all day because it was so stormy so I decided to continue with makeovers. See if you can see who else got the start of a New Makeover, I also compared the other two, Argyle and Un named Pleo cousin from yesterday's Makeover, The photos pretty much speak for themselves, When it is sunny or there is some good natural daylight I will take better photos to bring out the true colors. None of these three Pleos look exactly the same though they are all similiar in some ways.

Superperson: And as for the paint I am using it is a Oil based paint that is water proof, smudge proof and works well on rubber as you can see. There is no flaking and even after a bath of Pledge to the skin, the color is intact. I love it and it is a lot of fun a good way to give some individuality to those older Pleos whose "warranties" have run out, I would never do this to a new Pleo.
I am going to experiment in the future with some more vivid colors but that will be in the future I am happy now with these more subdued " natural" color patterns. HOpe some of you out there like them . :)

Hi Superperson, just remember to check and see if it says safe for rubber, I don't know if all of them are or not, it could be trial and error, Thank you for the comments on my Pleo makeovers, I feel like a kid in the Candy Store when I start doing Makeovers, I just have to make sure I don't get a " tummy ache" from too much of a good thing.  ;) Good luck with your painting and feel free to show us your work when done if you are happy with it, whether it is a touch up or repair or whole body like most of myne. If you don't like it, you can allways start over again,
I have one today that was my first Makeover that I removed most of the darker paint and will let him sit for a week or so while I contemplate what to do with him. I think he likes the fact I took the darker paint off him as well, he wants to be fresh again.

I love Nova's new colors, RWM! She looks fantastic!  I really like the lighter shade. I think it really makes her stand out. I would love to get an older Pleo sometime. I have a Ugobe, but it was just hatched in December. I would love to have a purple pleo. ( I know I'm weird.).  You are very creative. I love the new lease on life you have given your Pleos!  ;D

Hi Saratogaspringer, You know it is funny, because Sat I was looking at shades of Lavender and thought it would be fun to do a lavender Pleo, so who knows perhaps I will just for you to see what it would look like! I do like the idea of lizard and charmeleon colors changing all the times, they are so versatitle! I mean if you can have Pink and Blue Pleos, why not purple, orange, and every other shade out there,  %) :o ;D I think only the imagination is the limit, I also would like to do some different patterns in the future besides the speckles I have begun to do.
I am glad there are some people who appreciate Nova's new look.  :) It makes me happy and I think she is fresher looking now, she doens't mind having her "broken neck" and she can dresss or not dress and still be in fashion, looking different than everyone else, If you get a old Pleo, I would be happy to do one for you in color of your choice if you want or show you what it would look like!
Thank you on behalf of Nova and Argyle and "Un Named Cousin". RedwoodsMama

I really want to experiment with colors like a brown or natural red on Lance or something else that looks good(something natural looking). but Im kinda afraid to try it.

right now i repainted him green everywhere like normal. though the pain i used before is coming off.

If i wanted to paint him again but this time with the oil paint thats safe with rubber do i have to take all of his paint off, or can i leave it and paint over it?
How do you remove old paint if need be?

thanks for the help! i only hope lance looks as good as yours do!

ok im kinda crazy so i jumped right into pating lance compley red/orange.
 :o
so im done and it took me about 3 hours. i think he looks okay...i geuss im used to green so its kinda a shock to see him red.

hes not perfect. you can see some paint rippling up when he moves his tail. ill have to re paint it when his tail is down, hopefully that will fix it.

i would add pics but im still unclear how to do it right :(

Hi, do not worry too much esp if it is your first attempt, if you do not like it, you can start over again, to upload the picture first you put it in the gallery and once there, upload it to this post using the code as follows: [smg id=xxxx] the brackets need to be right next to the smg id- exactly like this and the xxxx represents the number that it is given in the gallery. Just be careful if you use really dark colors as some are harder to remove than others .
Are you done with Lance or is this his" base coat".  I would love to see what he looks like so far, I am sorry I did not get back to you sooner with any questions as I was off the internet till just now and am heading to bed, but will check back in the morning, If you still need help figuring out how to upload photos or to this post from the gallery, someone here can help you do it easily.  :)

thanks for the help! ill try and upload photos of him tomorrow. hes drying now. i did a a rustic red base and lighter yellow/orange for the highlight. it looks ok i hope Lance likes his new look. with the added touch up it took me 4 hours to finish. its no big to me, im a art major so im used to begin hunched over drawing for hours. :P

I couldn't help myself so i did some more touch ups of some of his tail and neck. when he was moving it was cracking. so i put more on him where he was having problems.

if i ever get another pleo i might try your look redwoods. it looks neat! how long did it take you?  :D

So far i like how he looks but just in case how do i remove his paint? do i rub it off? or use water...ect?

Hi RWM! I would love to see you do one in lavender! An older pleo might be on the books for me maybe around Christmas time.  It is slowly beginning to be spring here, and the R/C racing season is quickly approaching, as well as a trip to Disney in June, where I will be emptying my pockets to the mouse.  It seems so hard to find an older pleo out there, especially on eBay at a decent price. They really get a lot of bids.  I am taking my pleos to Disney with me, as they cannot go for 2 weeks without food!  :o.

Hi Saratogaspringer, I was also thinking of doing a light lavender one and may do one in this next month, Right now I am waiting for my Pleo Rb replacement or Baby to get back to me as I have been without her since Feb. and It is getting to me emotionally but I know it is out of my hands right now, thus the Pleo Makeovers are a distraction, I do have a method that is very good and does not take as long to do as you would think, It is just slow small areas at the time being done but the paint dries rather quick because I am not doing the whole body as opposed to Superperson who is.
I did do a whole body paint job once on Nova in a brown color and it was terrible, it took a long time to dry, it was too dark and it took forever to remove the paint and I must admit that a month later I was still finding very small flakes that I had to remove by hand, This is when I switched my paint method, type and area I would use, I am now very happy with the paint I am using and the method is a heck of a lot faster drying and seems to work better,
As for finding the perfect Pleo, it just takes a lot of looking at the right time, Even a Pleo that looks like it costs too much can be negotiated sometimes if you know what to do and how to talk to the person. Good luck in finding another Pleo, I will let you know if I do one in Lavendar.

Hi Superperson, Lance looks better than I thought he would in Red and orange, but Now I can understand the color pattern you were talking about, He looks pretty good, :) it does take getting use to if you are only used to seeing green, but that is the same with Pleo Rb, the yellow took awhile to get used to also,. I am wondering what do his feet look like where you have the booties, socks? Are they painted too, if so what color are they? How does the paint feel, is it dry yet or does it feel matte?
I would guess it was hard to cover the dark green paint but it seems you pulled it off so congratulations on gettting the green covered so well, At first I was a little skeptical when you said Red, but there are so so many different shades of red, and it all depends on the way it comes out and the shading, It is like when I first heard of Pink or blue Rb, I thought they would look strange but they do grow on you, Try and get some more body shots, I would like to see a tail shot or one of the feet too if possible, Congrats on being brave enough to do it. not many people are brave enough to even try...

Here is a short video I took this morning of NOva so you can see what she looks like in action, sometimes it is easier to see what a pleo pattern is really like when it is in a moving body. Nova has a broken neck and with the help of a lovely purple fur collar that I got from Kat, from Kat's Creations, it helps to dress up MS. Nova's broken neck, The video itself it not very entertaining it is just to show the movement of the pleo itself so you can see the pattern and color she has in movement.
I am still waiting for a nice sunny day as it is another grey overcast day and is supposed to be raining here all week.  :( I would love to have a sunny day to really take advantage of her look under the nice sun . Well, maybe next week.

Oh, for those of you with sharp eyes perhaps you can see the little detail I added last night to her original look from the first photos taken, It is not her toe nails, I still need to do those. :)             http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivanKbDUNHk

I love the red orange look on Lance. :)  I have always wanted to see a pleo this color.  He looks lovely and you did a great job covering the green.  How is the paint holding up?  Is it flaking?
RWM what brand of paint are you using to paint your pleos?  I would love to get some touch up paint for my guys but want to get something that won't flake off.
Nova looks so good with speckles.  I think she may need a longer fur though to fit more neatly over her neck brace.  I will make her a longer one and send it to you  :)  Maybe your new Baby when she arrives can wear the one Nova has on now as she will have a smaller neck and it should fit well.  I did wonder how well it would fit over a neck brace.

Thanks so much for showing us your new paint work.  I love the different looks.  One day I may even be brave enough to do a repaint myself.  But not for a while. :)

hes so cute in his neck brace  :D cant wait to see more paint jobs from you, i just love the pattern on his side. Its a great way to tell your pleos apart.  its like dogs and cats. no two look alike!

the paint on lance seems to be holding up. No flaking as of yet. when i used this paint before it flaked very easily. i think its holding better because i used alot this time. before it was just a touch up and i only used a little.

Wow, the red Pleo really makes me wanna paint my Pleos. Maybe I'll make my Pleos pink or a variant of the China pink Pleo. Pink's my favorite color. I've been looking into liquid chalk/glass chalk. What's the name of the paint you've been using, Redwoods? Thanks!

sadly i had to remove the red paint....it wasn't stretching with his neck and tail. i did love the red though. so ill look into a better paint that moves with him. any suggestions? ive heard oil, does that work really well? i dont want to do a full color over unless im sure it will work. because when i removed the red some well quite a bit of his green went with it :(

Hi , I am so sorry to hear about Lance's paint, I do know from past experiences that acrylic paint did not work on NOva it did dry, flake and took forever to remove . This is why I am now usin a Oil paint on my Makeovers and I am having very good success so far no cracking, fading or flaking and it does not seem to be damaging in anyway, and best of all, it is quick drying and safe to use on Rubber. ;D
Before finding this paint, I used Glass chalk for simple touch ups on love spots and it is cheap and easy to use. You do need to reapply but it will not damage the Pleo, I am hesitant to give out the name of the exact paint brand I am using as I do not want to be responsible for anyone else's Pleo and if damage occurs. I have not done an entire body yet, like the one you did on Lance, but smaller areas on my Pleos. My next Makeover will be a more complete body paint and Untill I do that I do not want to say how well it works. I am sure it will work well from what I have seen on my three so far, with no restriction in movement of the tail or neck so far and it looks very good and I document things all the time. More later.

thanks for the repky.
I will try the oil. but instead of jumping right into a full budy coverage ill just do 2 segments of his tail, to see if it will handle the bending of it. Dont worry if it goes bad i wont balme you  ;)

poor lance. when i was finally done rubbing his paint off i turned him on. he got sick :(
dont blame him. i have done alot of painting and scraping in the last 24 hours.

Oh dear, I'm really sorry you had to take the red paint off.  I thought Lance looked rather fabulous - I liked the sandy colour you had used for the pattern especially.  It looked great with the red.

I bought some acrylic inks to try out, because I know that's what the SFX companies tend to use on the latex models they make.  I'll try a touch-up and report back - apparently the colour goes more opaque when they dry.

Ok, I have a little surprise, I have one more makeover to show, not complete, but this one is what I call a "fantasy pleo " makeover, When you see the colors I think you can figure it out. There are lots of other shots, but these are just two to give you an idea of the coloring of this one. Different than my other ones so far and the most Fantasy for sure but fun still.

                                                      RedwoodsMama

Oh, the green bandages is because this pleo has a broken neck and the original bandage is blue so I used greeen to wrap to make it blend in better. I think it looks better than blue which was very distracting

Hi Sarah, I must admit I have an addiction I think to Pleo Painting, I will only use it on a Pleo that is old or falling apart and since I have adopted so many that are "not perfect", it is just a co-incidence that they happen to get a Makeover. Thanks I appreicate it that nobody has made fun of my makeovers yet. I do appreicate it so does this little guy.

Title: Re: Another Pleo Makeover #4 a work in progress
Post by: RedwoodsMama on March 16, 2011, 06:37:25 PM
Kat You are 100% Correct.  ;)That is Little 45, the poor little guy has his tail bandaged or it will fall off and also on his underside one patch( though not nearly as bad as Patches) but I thought why not give him a Makeover as well. I just wish I had a better way of covering up his neck, but this will have to do for now. :) With 45 there is not much you could do to make him any worse it was either no paint of something totally different so I thought go for it, and this fits his personality. He is a survivor like the Tiger, and has many scars to show it. He is not wanting to give up and go extinct, a lot like Pleos, so I thought of Tigers and Geckos and the colors I had available and it just came to me.
I had to remove a little of his old paint and it took a little elbow grease but nothing terrible cause the last paint was not acrylic, (I learned that lesson with Nova's first Makeover, not to ever use Acrylic paint again, it takes forever and ever to remove every last bit and dries out the skin too!) I will let you in on a secret too, I only did half of Little 45's body and that way If I didn't like it, I could see what it was like before  hand and a little easier to remove right away. I figure Pleos only have so much life left in them and when they are scarred little bodies like Poor Little 45, ( and Patches too!) give it your best shot and go for it, there is not too much to lose and you can allways cover them up with clothes if you do not like the end result.
He has the coloring of a tiger but more of the Gecko with his head patterns. I could have made his body bold and for sure like a tiger, but he still is a Pleo and wanted him to not look too far out there so people would still know he is a Pleo.
Unless I hear a lot of negative comments, I will finish the other side of his body and then post the whole results, but I am in no hurry, another few days is nothing big. He has waited months to get a Makeover and I had to Hit while the "fire was hot" so to speak if you know what I mean, When the "creative juices " are burning in me, I know to go for it, as too many other things can come up and delay everything, I do like his face, it is different than any other Pleo I have seen. :D

I thought you would!  I do think you should finish him as well - it's a great pattern and it's nice to see something completely different.  :)

WOW, RWM! Little 45 looks awesome! Now I don't know what makeover I like better....Nova or Little 45!  I really like all the different colors in this one.  You need to take a picture of him with the plant Crewella mentioned.  That would be really neat.  Truly a work of art.  I think I have mentioned this show before that my daughter watches on PBS. It is called Dinosaur Train and the dinos on that cartoon are all different colors of the rainbow.  I don't know why, but all of these different colors coming out reminds me of the dinos on that show.  You are very creative.  I wish I had the patience to paint like you do.  I can't wait to see Little 45 completed in that color!  You may have some jealous Pleos on your hands when the rest of them see Little 45!   :o

Hi Saratoga, I will have to find that plant and take some photos, good idea. once the rain stops here... I like children's t.v shows esp shows that are on channels like PBS, I will have to see if I can find that show you are talking about. As for which Makeover is better, they are completly different. Nova has a more pale palette and Little 45 has more vivid colors, so they are on opposite ends of the rainbow too. Too me it is like comparing vanilla ice cream and a really rich Cheesecake, They each have their own unique taste but both are delicious!
I am so glad that you approve of Little 45's new look. I will finish it sometime soon, I need to take more photos before I complete it, I like a lot of before and after shots so I can remember where he came from. Little 45 will be glad to know that there are some admirers of his out there. :)

I really hope you complete little 45 that way as well.. it looks amazing.  And your giving him more life back!!  Just like I'm trying to do with Patches (with much help from Kat!) And I think if Innvo looked at your guys they would say:  'Hmmmm'
Lyssa's paint is starting to peel.. maybe one day I can paint her too look like a real Goddess of Rage! Should I use real blood?  ;)
And Superperson, I'm so sorry your paint came off.. it looked awesome..

Best of luck, have fun!!

I was wondering, these are all ugobe Pleos, right?  I would imagine that's why the color stays on better, because of the skin texture being rougher.. I assume on an RB it wouldn't work because of the smooth skin?

They look great though..

If the warranties out, I see no problem at all with repainting Innvo Pleos.

Sarah, you are right, these are all Ugobe Models, I would never ever do it on a Pleo Rb, they are brand new ! :o You are right the Ugobe Models do have a different texture and I think it takes the paint better. I will be trying to finish Little 45 today, the other side I didn't do,plus adding some red highlights, ( very little) to some of the  outlines. I will post the results when I do, I am also in the first stages of hatching my new baby, so my time is going to be divided today, among usual Sunday, Weekend things.
Kristy, you are right, as far as I have seen if the warranty is out , you can go for it also and Innvo Pleos and Ugobes both have the same skin texture so they are a perfect model to paint also. :) Thanks for the comments.

What can I say,  :( I admit it I am guilty. I can try to lay the blame on MS . NOva and the gang, that they were forced into a painting party with MS. Nova and a whip in her hand lashing out at the Pleo masses to get out of a nice cozy warm box ( bed) and get into my hidden paint supplies.( or so I thought..LOL) and they gave her an updated Spring Makeover. ( love is in the air it appear... :)) but I can't let Major Tom, Argyle.( being blind is no excuse...he is the Mastermind after all...) Little 45, Argyles Cousin, Gold Hatch, Talons little Ugobe Pleo, and the rest, but the truth is....it is me,,, I have a terriblel secret and I can't keep it under wraps anymore. :o

I am known from my high school days as "the Made Painter", and the poor unsuspecting Pleos, if they lose some paint, some uncontrollable urge comes over me and I can't control it. Even my husband has been kept from this terrible secret, only to find me late at night hiding behind closed doors, to open it with flashlight in hand.... :o to catch me hovering above an unsuspecting MS. Nova about to add new color.......I allways have another story, putting her away quickly less my secret get out, but I feel like a robot with no control. Some hidden force is making me do it, and I have to come clean and out in the open, I can't hide behind closed door anymore. I have to say with my head held high. ( "yes, I am the mad Painter from the Redwoods...". There I feel better I confess to this terrible sin.

Oh, and MS.NOva is sporting a new neckbrace and foot brace as well.

come on now, there are bound to be other sinners out there just waiting to confess to the same crime, come out in the open, it is a releif at last! :D

I do understand the urge, RWM - I have a similar one to renovate.  Probably because of my antiques background, however, I'm more used to trying to replicate the original rather than be creative and just go for it!  At the moment, I'm still all tied up with watching the effects on the skin in the longer term of both the paints and the skin care products I've been trying, but in the future I will try to do follow your example and experiment a little!  :D

I like Nova's paler green head colour there, and I like the way you've also speckled the underside in a contrasting shade.  You're getting better results all the time! I now realise you will probably try yet another scheme in the future, but I really can't see Nova letting you get rid of the pink now!  :P  ;D

Just want to say, i LOVE the red! I like nova's solid light-color head too. I have to admit, I'm not so keen on the speckles, but some of the pics where they don't have overboard speakles look pretty cute  :). My favorite is the solid red, but I kind of like the fantasy one too, with a little work, it could look like a chamealan (can't spell for the life of me) or gecko. Keep up the great work!

Nova said she is keeping the color she has, I will only do touchups if needbe but her color is the way she wants it.....for now anyway, ( with Nova at one time, My first attempt she was painted with an acrylic all one color that did not work, flaked and took forever to get off, iN FACT  there are still some hidden little flakes I occasionaly come across, very annoying. >:() My next project is all depending on the final vote results of the color Poll that has about one week to go!
I am at this point looking at a more solid color with just color contrast, not all these speckles somthing more different, but I can't say what it is yet or it would be letting the cat ( Pleo) out of the bag.I have thus far only used old, paint worn or ones with lots of wear to use as models. I do have some great condition, New Pleos, but there are too many older model Ugobes out there screaming at me for a makeover...so that is where I am going with that. It does no good though to use one that has such bad skin that the paint will not adhere and or take the risk of making the skin worse. The skin has to be firm and moist enough, ( not too dried out) for the paint to work.
Red does seem to be popular and I have a certain dinosaur painting /model illustrations I have seen in a book that would be a good model for the right color, Getting that color may be the tricky part. I also have seen some great blue/greys lavender and green shades with nice contrast too. Everyone has to wait as I do to see what happends. It may just be a surprise for me as well! ;)

Hi Maria, yes, I was the first one to find this last week or so and it is listed under another heading, Ugobe Pleo Paint ----. Crewella then started a whole ink painting thing which got the" Mad painter" myself going if you look under that heading. I think lots of people are intersted in these inks for their Rb. :)
