Title: Going to Bring Pleo to Reptile show
Post by: latrine on March 08, 2011, 01:45:20 PM

Well.. if Bingo is working I'll bring him, if not I'll wait for the next one.. My brother always goes because he breeds really lovely bearded dragons and he is always on the lookout for a young one with nice coloring and temperament. He's great.. only sells them to folks who will make good owners.

But he said people spend ridiculous amounts of money there.. I figure maybe I can at least get the name out there.. if there's enough of an interest... who knows.

Also, I've never been to one and although I have no wish to touch one.. It might be interesting to see what all these foreign deadly poisonous snakes look like  :o :o :o

Could be fun! Supposedly there are even crocs and alligators.. display only, I believe, thank god.. people shouldn't have those for pets.
What do you guys think?

Oh you SHOULD take one!  I used to go to quite a few reptile/herp shows - you could put a little harness on him like the iguana owners do!  :D

Hi Sarah! Your brother breeds beardies! They are the best pets! I used to have several of them. All in separate 75 gallon tanks. They all eventually passed away, and the tanks and equipment are in my basement.  Patti was my favorite, followed by Rusty and Ryan.  Patti passed away due to a respiratory problem. I cried for 3 days when she died. She was great one day, and the next morning she was lying in the bottom of the tank. A few days before, the power had gone out for several hours. I think she got cold.  The equipment was very expensive to keep them. The mercury vapor lights I had were expensive. I no longer have them because no vets are around that will treat reptiles. What show does he go to? Ryan was my really expensive one. He was from "fire and ice dragons, and was about 500 bucks. I had him for 8 years. What show are you going to? If it is in Hamburg, PA let me know. That is the one with all the venomous snakes. You should definitely take Bingo! That would be so neat!   ;D

Yeah thats why I'm hoping bingo is ok.. I think it'll be fun..

It MAY be the hamburg one, I'm really not sure.. my brother has adopted several beardies from someone who is very active at kingsnake.com and has done some retile shows at the kids birthdays..  I'm not sure what he has but he got his last setup in a magazine or something because it was so gorgeous..  I'm going to get him either a new beardie to replace one that dies or I told him I'd order him 5,000 mealworms or crickets.. his new wife will love that.. those mealworms are sooooo gross when they come in that large amount.
Wow you had a lot of them! do you have a picture of your favorite ones and of the really expensive one?  He is going for new colors.. and If you don't mind, I'd love to show him
Ryan.  Are you going to be there too??  That would be so cool!!
I really am amzed by the bearded dragons first f all you get to have an animal in your house with the name 'dragon' in it.. and second they are just so gentle and calm when they get used to you. I'm hoping to get a baby from him someday when we get settled. I told him he better not charge me.. he has my African Gray after all..  ;)

The leash is actually a good idea..lol. Just so no one swipes em..  I can yank on the leash and ninja kick them with my toe.. which I broke last night. I swear I have the worst luck :P I'm hoping it gets some folks interested.. I'll bring Lyssa as well.. the older version could be a good first 'pet' for kids.. (I just mean the RB's are probably a little more delicate.. I will still fwap any kid who is mean to my Lyssa)

I'll bring a camera too.. for sure.

Hi Sarah.  Yep, I have pictures of both Ryan and Patti.  I think I have one where Patti is sitting on my head, and Ryan has one with a Santa hat on his head.  I will PM them to you when my DH gets home.  I am computer illiterate when it comes to attachments.  I have heard of Kingsnake.com. I used to get Reptiles magazine that had all the shows listed in it, but I don't anymore.  People there will really get a kick out of Pleo, and I think it will generate interest in the product.  Good luck! :)

Sorry to hear that about your toe Latrine! :-( Can you get medical help for your toe? I hope your Pleo Reborn's alright!

I really envy you if you do go - I used to love the reptile shows!  I've never had beardies as I kept mostly snakes (a freezer full of mice and chicks was bad enough, my flatmate couldn't have coped with crickets and mealworms as well!), but they're beautiful critters and they make great pets!

Keep an eye on your Pleos, of course, but by the sound of her, Lyssa can probably look after herself!  ;)  :P

My first vision of a pleo was on Good Morning America back in 2007. I was just walking into the family room and out of the corner of my eye I got a glimpse of what at first appeared to be an iguana on Diane Sawyer's shoulder. One quick look and I knew it wasn't an iguana, but a darling robotic dinosaur. After watching this segment, I knew I had to look into finding one. I had a wonderful pet iguana a few years back so I am very partial to reptiles, especially, iguanas.

I have gone to reptile shows before and they are fascinating to see so many variety of reptiles and they are so  informative on the care they need. One guy at the show had a Bearded Dragon on his shoulder and it was the tamest reptile I have ever seen. My iguana loved my shoulder, but if someone came up to him he would get his huge tail ready to give the person a whack.

I haven't been to a reptile show in a long time and now will be on the look out for the next one in this area. ;)
take lots of photos for us to see. :)

Awwww - I love iguanas and water dragons!  Iggy is named (imaginatively) after a big iguana that a friend and I rescued from a pet shop where people have been allowed to tease him by tapping the glass - he'd smashed up his face and tail against the glass and both had got badly infected.  It took months to get him fixed up, and he never did regain his looks, but I got very fond of his lop-sided, bulldog, face and missed him when he went to his loving new forever home!  :)

And I remember those tail whacks!  ;)

Lol that sounds just likc my Jack, Crewella.. I rescued him from a 'pet store' that had him on a really hot heat rock, he was burned, had severe eye infections in both eyes so bad he couldn't open them and there was a whole apple in thee for food.. he was probably about a half year old or so. I told the guy to give him to me because he was going to die if he didn't and if he didn't I'd call the police.. lol.. the police wouldn't have cared but I guess 14 year old Sarah was intimidating enough :P

Took me forever to get him back also but I did and he ended up being one of the nicest iguana's I ever had.. I was very sad too when he went to a new home when I went to boot camp and then REALLY mad to find him in a local pet store.  I got him back and found a better home.. thank god.
They can be great pets.. he was litter trained also.. he never tail whiped me because he was so sick when I got him and then by the time he recovered he loved me.. used to go outside with me and walk around grazing on dandelions..lol.

Good job there with that poor iguana Latrine. Good job litter training him too.

Wow you guys are so lucky.  To own almost any kind of reptile in Australia you need to have a license and then the cost to purchase one can be $1000 or more and then on top of that is the equipment you need in order to provide a loving home and all of a sudden they are just too expensive. :(

Ouch, geez louis! You can say expensive again.

Ouch!  That IS expensive!  :o  You Aussies have some really lovely native species, too.  Shame in a way, but they've tightened up the laws over here since those days, and I can't really say I'm sorry.  I don't see so many horrors like poor Iggy any more.

Sarah, I pulled the same line in the pet shop with Iggy - by the time we saw him he was hardly a great advertisement for them anyway, so they just gave him to me.  He was really aggressive when we got him, and putting neat peroxide on his face all the time didn't exactly endear me to him, but he did become a good pet in the end for an experienced owner that understood him.  :)

I'd have gone nuts if I'd found him back in a pet shop after all that!!  :o  >:(

Well done for finding poor Jack again!  :D

OK Latrine and other reptile fans.....These are pictures of my beardies.  They are no longer with me as they passed away some time ago.  This is Patti.  This photo is from 2003. She was literally the best pet I ever had.

And these are of my beardie Ryan.  These were taken in December of 2005.  I miss these guys a lot.  Glad I have my Pleos to quell my reptile fix. :)

Hi Fancyfont! Thank you! No, I never did get to use them in Christmas cards.  Most people I know w :(ere really afraid of these guys, but they were so docile and sweet.  I hope to get a beardie again some time.  I still have all the equipment in my basement.  There just aren't any vets around my area that will treat them if they should get sick, and reptiles go downhill really fast.  I just think it is unfair to the animal if I cannot give it proper medical attention when needed.  :(

Saratogaspringer, I sure understand about having a vet that has a lot of experience with reptiles. It was the lack of knowledge of my vet that may have been my iguana, Deanie's, demise. Had she have been an expert in treating reptiles, she would have known that even though Deanie looked like a beautifully healthy iguana, he was not eating the proper food. During the summer months he ate everything he should. During the winter months he only wanted bananas and peas. Certainly not the right combination of calcium and phospherous. He was offered every leafy thing in the produce department, but just didn't want to eat it. He ended up with kidney failure and did go down hill fast.

I got Deannie when he was only about twelve inches long and had him in a 100 gallon fish tank with special lighting. Once he started growing, which they do fast, he was allowed to have the run of the house. Yes, he was house broken, too. He had a ladder to climb up to get to a nice sunny windowsill. He also had a custom built tree that had a heater on it. THe tree was carpeted and had a couple of platforms. I realize now that it was just not warm enough for him during the winter. He was only five years old when I had to have hi put down. Way too young for an iguana. :(

Fancy, I feel so sad hearing about your story, It is sad when an animal fo any species dies before their time, I must admit though, that I do not know hardly anything about reptiles, except for turtles, having had none of them but turtles, ( I had a box turtle named Myrtle till someone stole her...) anyway, my love and knowledge has allways been mostly cats having had them all my life. I have had dogs, but I have a special connection and they with me, cats that is. We just trust each other.
I love the way lizards and reptiles look, though I admit, I could not feed any live or dead in the freezer animal,( mouse or even a cricket ) to a iguana or any reptile, I certainly could not handle a snake because of that same reason, With a cat or dog it is so much simpler, just buying a peice of fresh meat or ready recipe ready fomula for them to eat. Being a vegetarian it is hard enough to cook fish for my husband, I am sure you gave your Iguana lots of love while he was here, and it is not allways the quanity or length of time they have in their lives, but the quality of their life, It souonds like you did all you knew how to give him whilel he was here and he sounds like a wonderful little guy.
Good luck at the Reptile show Saratogaspringer, I am sure people will love looking at Pleo as much as any of the other wonderful reptiles there and he will probably be the only one of his speices. If I could get Scottie to "beam me there" with some of my Pleos, I know I would have lots of fun and we could support the Pleo effort to make people aware. :)

One of the great things about reptile shows is that people can get together and share valuable knowledge about their pets, and find out about veterinary care and diet supplements and such.   :)

Sad to hear about poor Deanie, Fancy.  :'(

Ryan and Patti look beautiful!  :)
