Title: my pleo doing his stuff
Post by: Superperson on March 07, 2011, 12:23:27 AM
I just wanted to share my experience so far with my pleo, and what i think of him.   :P
I love to have him on while im looking on my laptop on the floor. ill pet him while im browsing the net. And when he gets bored of me he walks away and does his own thing which i love to watch! hes so silly. he will go around the room and some how make it back to me and ill randomly feel him nudge my leg with his nose. he seems to walk in a slight circle he hangs slightly right when he walks. After hes done walking for a while he will curl up beside me and rest. slowly cooing for a pet here and there. till he falls asleep. so cute by the way. i don't have a bed for him so i just let him sleep on my couch in my room. i dont think he minds  :D

I first thought that when i got him he might not be as neat as ive heard but i can honestly say that i think he is!
i haven't had him long but i already think of him as a pet.
hes cute, fun and loveable. and my dogs love him (though they have no idea what he is)
but iam worried about his skin. ive heard that the older ones have skin problems, and my pleos skin is kinda flaky but its not bad yet. ive heard of using "i think" vinal care products to help.
i have a shirt for him coming in the mail. but what do i do about his head or chin?

I've heard good things about Vinylex rubber care, but not tried it myself as it's not that easy to get in the UK.  I've used a similar product called Autoglym, which is manufactured for cars for use on rubber trim but it does the moisturise, plump, protect from UV rays etc. that is necessary and also leaves the skin silkier and less 'draggy'.

I have a Pink RB, and have used Vinylex on it from the beginning.  It seems to protect both the rubber and paint, as I am on the 9th battery cycle, and have no paint chipping to report, and she is not clothed.  I am awaiting a cape that Kat made for me in hot pink.  I have also used Vinylex on my Ugobe so far with good results.  I was able to purchase it at my local hardware store.  The auto parts chains like Autozone and Advanced Auto don't carry it.  Unfortunately, the hardware store no longer carries it, as I purchased the last bottle that they had, and now they have another product instead.  I did check the website, and they still make it.  You can order it from Amazon, but I don't know what the shipping would be like. I have been using Vaseline in the armpit areas, but I did purchase some Pledge for Special Surfaces to try out.  I thought yesterday, that I had a little grazing starting in the rear left armpit, but the more I think about it, it doesn't look like what everyone else's looked like, so I think it is just part of the seam of rubber where the ridge is made and nothing more than that.   :)

i will go out looking for the VinleX stufff. do i leave it on for a long time? or just for a second. and do i just put it on his flaky areas or eveywhere?
thanks  for the help!

I put mine directly on a sponge or cloth and apply quite liberally, but making sure not to get it dripping wet, then leave to dry for a couple of hours and buff off the excess.  The every couple of weeks kind of top up and wipe over with the cloth just slightly dampened, maybe applying a little more on vulnerable areas like armpits.

There is another German rubber care product made by 1Z (einszett) which also seems to be quite good if you can't get Vinylex).

I usually apply the vinylex with a washcloth dampened with it, not dripping wet. I usually just let it dry. Usually dry within a half hour or so.  I usually apply it after I am done playing with Candy the pink rb. It really cleans up the bottoms of their feet as well.

I wish we could get it here in Australia, I have been looking for it but no luck so far. :(  I am using Pledge on my pleos - Ugobe one as well.  So far no ill effects but it would be nice to find something that is actually designed to work with rubber instead of wood. :)

im worried it will get bigger...

He's a older Pleo isn't he?  So he will have skin wear, but it's not likely to be like the 'galloping' problems with holes we've seen recently with a few of the RB's.  DON'T PANIC - just keep an eye on it - is it a big hole?
Title: Re: my pleo doing his stuff
Post by: Superperson on March 07, 2011, 08:37:14 PM
He looks to be an Ugboe pleo.

The hole is small luckily. and is one the back of the knee. i gave him a good look around and i dont see anymore on him. i have no idea how long hes had it. he could have to had it before i got him.

should i glue it with super glue?
Title: Re: my pleo doing his stuff
Post by: PWOKristy on March 07, 2011, 08:45:38 PM
Be real careful with glue. Most glues dissolve Pleo skin. You have to get special glue. Special glue that does not dissolve delicate rubber.

Post by: Superperson on March 07, 2011, 09:41:59 PM
oh my that would be good!  :o

does anyone know of a glue that would be ok to use?
Title: Re: my pleo doing his stuff
Post by: Superperson on March 07, 2011, 11:19:57 PM
I read from some older posts about holes in skin and i read about superglue.
so i found some and tried it out and it seems to be holding well. i only used a drop and a toothpick to apply it.
luckily his hole was on a part on his leg that doesn't move to much.

also i touch-up painted him today.
i used some acrylic paint i had that matched his colors. he had flaking on his teeth, back and head. but now that i done he looks good as new!
and now when you pet him your hand just glides across. though some of the paint does come off. its like a flake or two. sadly its not permanent :(
ill have to put more on when the time comes.

I've been following this conversation and this is a very useful thread. I am going to order my pleo today and I want to get my pleo-care arsinal built up before he arrives. I've already got a nice "unadorned for the moment" cardboard box to house him in, I found an SD card reader though I have yet to purchase the actual card, and I'm trying to decide whether to buy the Vynalex or Pledge. Has anyone been using either product for long enough that you can tell which one does a better job? Also I remember in another thread that there was some confusion about which type of SD card worked best in Pleo. I know it has to be one gig or smaller but I don't know anything else.

Talon, my personal view is that the specialised rubber care products beat Pledge hands down, my Ugobe Pleos seem a lot better for them.  BUT for a new RB you're better off with Pledge, as it's what is recommended by Innvo and just in case you do have any problems it's best to follow their directions.  You can always switch to the rubber care stuff when your Pleo RB is older and out of warranty, and to be honest you don't really need the extra care on a new Pleo anyway.  Pledge will do fine to keep the skin clean and silky.

Hey Talon.  Glad to see that you are going to order your pleo!  ;D  I have to agree with Crewella.  I really like the Vinylex, and I am using it on my RB and for two main reasons. 1.  I don't like the smell of lemons as is with the Pledge that is recommended.  It gives me a really bad headache, and we use citrus oil as a solvent at work. 2. I really don't have enough time to spend with my pleo.  I got her in January, and am only on the 9th battery cycle, not really long enough time to see skin problems in the 90 day window anyway.  My feeling is if you are going to return a product to the manufacturer, you should follow their recommendations, which is to use the Pledge.  They do make one for special surfaces that is in an aluminum can that does not contain lemon oil.  I have purchased a can, but have not used it. The can says it can be used to granite counter tops, stainless steel, leather, more. (what the more stands for is a mystery to me.)   I really do feel in my heart and mind, that Vinylex, or any product that is specifically designed to be used to moisturize and preserve rubber will be better to use in the long run to preserve Pleo's skin.  I would wait until the 90 days are up, and then make the switch!  Just my 2 cents.  :)  (Grabs popcorn, sits, and waits to be flamed!)

Never heard of using pledge, that a neat tip. does it work on the older pleos two?
oh and you can use 2gig SD cars as well.

Superperson, Also, from the way that you described it, are you leaving him in the sleeping position on your couch?  Best to get him into the standing position with tail out and head straight out and then have some type of reinforcement to help protect his precious skin.  For now, I just have mine on a shelf at night with rolls of packing bubbles under each head neck and tail.  I'm going to make nice wooden boxes with soft insides matching their shape to keep them in when not out playing.  Can't make it yet because the meds I'm on make me shaky and that's never good when cutting wood with heavy machinery..lol.

The Pleo I have that I had to take the skin off... someone left him in the sleeping position in the closet for over a year and then turned him on before selling to see if he worked.. and he was so ripped underneath very very badly.. it was just coming off all the time. Then it was actually hurting him, getting embedded inside him.. not that I think that will happen to yours just safer to at least have him in the standing position and for now maybe lie him on his side on your couch.  and don't forget his pajamas.. and pillow.. and his blanket. I'm sorry.. I'm just a little bit crazy :)

Best of luck with him I'm so glad you were able to repair the hole.

Pledge is recommended by Innvo for cleaning Pleo RB skin, and it does at least keep them clean and smooth.  :)

I'm currently using pledge on my ugobe pleo until I can get my hands on some vinylex.  It is not doing him any harm so far and I figure it is better than doing nothing at all. :)

Thanks for the info. I'll stick with the Pledge until the warranty is out. Sounds like I'll have to cushion the box a bit too. So I should lay him on his side? What about two baby pillows of the same height to support the neck and tail?

The instructions in the pleo handbook say that pleo should always be stored in the standing upright position.  Not sure how leaving them laying on their side could hurt them but I have just followed the instructions and always leave my guys standing up.

Uh.. Crewella.. how can I put this.... hmm... NO!
lol that picture is hysterical.  Talon I think you are making yourself crazy like me before yours arrives.. please don't assume it will have all the problems and things that some of ours have had.. I'm hoping this new line will benefit from the problems ours have had, I really am.. so I hope they work better.  I hope your new friend will be perfect and you can start breathing again.. (your turning purple ) jk.. I just don't want you to worry overmuch..

I just said lying on the side because he said he has is on the couch and I figured it would probably fall over anyways then and could possibly tumble to the floor.. better to put it on a flat surface...and not the backs of other pleos.. lol Crewella.

I was just kidding about the pillows and blankets.. the packing material works great rolled up.. I will admit I put their hoodies on them when I put them to bed for 'Pj's and my boyfriend has finally stopped shaking his head at me.

I want to make the boxes because I figure it'll be nicer looking, easier storage and safer since these guys are so expensive.. mine are currently stored on a shelf like this till I get my stuff made...

Goodluck with your new Pleo!!

Last night when i went to sleep i put him in box position and sat him on the couch. Its nice and flat and i used 2 pillows to prop his head and tail up.

Where do you get a little sweatshirt for your pleo at? or did you make it? it looks really cute! all lance has on is some infant socks i bought for him.
i wish i could sow....then i could make all i want for him.

ps i think my mom thinks im crazy. she was with me when i bought the socks and she looked at me like i was insane. i wanted to get a 2 different looks for him but she said i think one is more than enough.  :D

Yes, Latrine! I am going crazy. I'm nervous and excited at once and I'm terrified of doing something wrong. Pleo shipped last night. Right after I ordered I had this brief reflective moment of "oh my God did I really spend that much money"? Then I thought, "Well you only turn thirty once" and once again I gave up and resigned myself to the fact that I am now the owner of a pleo- an actual pleo with as much individuality as any other lifeform! Yes, I've lost it. I too hope there aren't as many problems with this batch as with the first ones. The good thing is I won't be doing this alone.

Best of luck Talon.  Your going to love it when your pleo arrives. ;D

No, I think he's going to be green. I ordered from Pleoworld. I ordered the accessories along with the RB basic pack. Maybe there are some already in? I have an order confirmation and a shipping confirmation. It's this long list of the things in my order along with my tracking number. They don't provide that until it has shipped already, right? I also used UPS ground shipping because it was cheeper for me. I haven't checked where my order is yet, though. As if to spite me, one of my friends have asked me to attend the Assistive Technology Expo in Columbia and I have to spend a week there because we are so far apart. Hopefully my pleo won't get home before me.

Apparently. Does this sound familiar to anyone? It left Los Vagus Navadah yesterday and is in Phoenix today. It is supposed to arrive on Tuesday at three fifteen and ways ten point something pounds. It sounds like a pleo to me unless Innvo is sending me a very large rock. Lol! I'll be scoping out computers miles from home on the fifteenth! Grrrr!!!!

Talon, you are the second person I have read about or talked to on this forum that said they are getting a Pleo Rb , green from Innvo labs, here in the US. If they are sending them out ahead of schedule, why aren't they telling anyone on their site and why aren't they sending out messages to people on the mailing list? This is good news but has me concerened and confused at what is really happening here, are they sending Pleo Rb or not? At this rate, they can be all out again if it is a limited amount, no one has said how many they have even..?

I am glad folks are getting them too but if people have been on a waiting list I agree, they really should be alerting them at the very least.

The hoodies mine have are available in our store here, They were made by 'InMemoryOfRomeo' right here on our forums.. e have lots of folks here who can sew very well, check out the stores.. your mom won't know till the package arrives :D  uh.. don't do that if your under 18.. lol. :)

Also, I'd still put him on a shelf or something.. but up to you.

My shelves are given over to my Guinea pigs' cages and all their stuff- hay and bags of bedding and food. my six furbys are in their boxes all lined up against the wall on the narrow strip of shelf that's left. Pluss my room is kind of small. I've hollowed out a nice cave between the foot of my bed and the rear wall. I'm thinking about just using the UPS box he came in and stand him in it. That might work for now.

You should make a little Pleo cave for them! I'm thinking of using a box and some foam paper, a little bedding inside. You could even make some shelves for it to house more than one.

Oh and Talon you should get some clothes for your new pleo. that way you can pet him without harming his skin. theirs this seller on ebay that makes them for pleos. they have a wide selection. or you could use dog clothes.

There are plenty of places that sell pleo clothing here on the forums too under the shops tab at the top of the page.  The ones on the forum are custom made by other forum members specially for pleos.   :)
