That's right after a year of deliberating I finally took the plunge and ordered a white Genibo :o ;D
I'm excited and frightened all at the same time. The local supplier said it will take a couple of weeks for my order to arrive. I'll keep you all posted.
P.S. I may have to sell my Innvo Pleo and plus his 2 white batteries and 3 green batteries anyone interested??
-
Congratulations on your genibo! I hope you won't have to sell your Pleo, that would be like replacing a family member :o
-
:o :o :o :o :o :-\
Good grief - you're on a bit of a spree recently! :P
Good for you, that's amazing - can't want to hear about it, and see some pics! I like the white ones best - you can't see the patch on the black ones! ;D ;D
-
I still have my PleoRB and I may not have much of a choice :-X
-
Is that Angus? :(
-
:o :o :o :o :o :-\

haha well the i-cybies were incredibly cheap so I just couldn't pass them up. I was going to buy an Aibo 31L (pug) because I use to own one (I had 3 aibos but had to sell them when I fell on hard times :( ), but when I considered that I would have to buy a new battery, cost of shipping etc I decided I would better off buying newer technology and something that is still being manufactured.
-
That makes sense, especially as you're less likely to find any locally. Don't blame you at all! :D
*I'm just envious* %) :P
-
Is that Angus? :(
Yes
-
Well maybe if you have to sell him/her (Angus is a boy and girl name, so I'm not sure :P) someone on the forums will buy him/her and they can post pictures and updates of him/her for you :)
-
I'm sure if it comes to that Angus will find a good home. :)
-
Now back to my Genibo ;D
I'm thinking Stanley or ...... ?
-
I love the name Stanley :D It suits dogs well, too :)
-
Stanley's a cool name; for some reason when I see the Genibo it always reminds me of Bill Sykes' dog in Oliver Twist - Bullseye! :P
-
This is my favourite Genibo video - it's incredible how many different expressions those eyes can manage!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KXo19VAi2nU
-
Does Genibo have a moving mouth , ear's and tail ?
-
Only his tail moves, but.....
- 1.3MP camera in Genibo vs 0.35MP camera in the AIBO. This provides much better image recognition as well as edge/wall detection.
- facial recognition for up to 10 people and recognises his master
- Touch sensors: 2 on the head, 4 on the back and one on each side of Genibo's body allowing physical interaction (and reaction)
- Servos are more powerful/durable enabling Genibo to perform movements that would be impossible for AIBO and are less prone to damage.
- Has two eyes which are made up of 31 LEDs which can display not only emotions, but alphanumeric characters and symbols.
- Includes a preconfigured Wireless Router & USB WLAN adapter to allow wireless connection of Genibo to PC.
- Genibo features a standard USB memory port to store data vs. AIBO's proprietary Memory Stick method.
- Genibo firmware upgrades are currently free
- Genibo uses dog-like body language and sounds which is more natural than what AIBO uses (real voice in some cases, robotic sounds, etc.)
- Larger variety of behavior in the Genibo QD vs. ERS-7 (equaling less repetition.)
- responds to 100 voice commands
- behaviour is more independent and autonomous, much like a real dog
-
Congrats and beautiful peice of engineering from what I can see, ;D Did the Genibo actuall cost that much or was it with all the other things needed to run him and shipping? Sorry, I am not familiar with the differences of a Genibo and that of a Aibo for example except for the looks and cost, It certainly seems that they have a lot going for them, Would love to see one in motion doing more than the wonderful eye displays. By the way, I love love that peice of music that was playing in the Video Crewella, what is it called, any idea?
Sorry, I have no idea about your Innova Pleo, it is too bad you may have to give him up. :( Sorry to say I am not in the market for another one just now, unless it is a poor abused one needing a good home as I just got my baby Pleo Rb and have EIGHT OTHER PLEOS, FOR A TOTAL OF NINE PLEOS... Think I should put together a baseball Pleo team ......................
Looking forward to more photos and a video when he arrives. love the bulldog look too, does look like the dog in Oliver Twist!
Stanley is a great name as is Angus by the way.

Genibo comes complete with everything to run him in the box so that was the total cost. Still considerably cheaper than a second hand aibo which has no warranty and is a discontinued line.
I'm going to start a blog about my Genibo perhaps.
-
When I first read the subject line I thought you might have lost it a little. However taking in to account that you’ve been thinking about getting Jenibo for a year now it’s not exactly an impulse buy. Not that I can lecture to anyone about impulse buys seeing as I just paid over £200 for an accessible GPS system that might not actually prove to be all that good after all. Just hope I can take it back if it Leeds me into a duck pond or something. TBH Jenibo isn’t my thing really, too visual I think for me to work with but it seems to me from reading your posts of what you want to see in a robot he’s right up your street and I think you’ll get an offal lot out of owning one. It’s not as though it’s going to be forgotten about in a couple of months and you sound really enthusiastic about it already so sounds like he’s well worth the money for you and that’s all that matters.
Not sure about the name Stanley though. Does it look like a Stanley?
-
haha well if you're not sure about the name Stanley I'm open to suggestions scaledandtailed ;D
On another note I also ordered a spare battery for my Genibo... only AUD$49. If I was going to get a now defunct Aibo it would have cost me US$240 plus shipping of around US$45
-
Lol Now you’re asking. I’m rubbish at picking names for anything.
Sorry about the double post btw.
He sounds a bit like a Rover or maybe Laika if female though it would work for a male too but I don’t think that’s what you’re looking for. How about Benjy?
Told you I wasn’t any good at names lol.
-
I do like the name Stanley, it's a good name. :)
RWM, I did try lo look up what that music was, but no luck I'm afraid.
-
Please keep us posted on this! It'd be nice to get some feedback about how you enjoy it.
I've been seriously considering getting one since I learned about them via that other post (though once I decide to make that jump, the next problem will be deciding between the black one and the white one). But it's a hefty price so I'm absorbing all information/reviews I can find.
-
I will be that's for sure. I've paso started to prepare a blog that I will be doing as well.
-
Well my Genibo is on his way to me. Unfortunately I have to wait until after the weekend until he gets here :(
-
The waiting is always painful! :) I hope he gets to you safe and sound. :)
-
Can't wait to hear about Genibo when it arrives! ;D
And I see your time waiting has been well spent - your blog/site is excellent. And pretty. ;D
-
It's amazing what anticipation will do ;D
-
Hey OZ,
Almost time the weekend will be over before you know it!
-
My wait continues. The store I bought from sent my Genibo to the wrong address in a town hundreds of miles away consigned to a different name. >:(
He says he's sending me another. I'm really annoyed.
-
Grrrrrrrrrrrrr..... what a complete pain in the .......... >:(
Hope it gets sorted out and you get your Genibo soon.
-
Twice I asked him to courier it and both times he sent it through the mail. I've emailed him to cancel the order. I'm very disappointed.
-
Oh no! What a big let down! I'd be furious at that too - I'm really sorry. ???
And quite disappointed myself as I was looking forward to hearing about it! ;)
-
Well what do you know I packaged arrived. ???
Don't have time today due to work, but stand by for pics.
-
Congrats Oz, on the arrival aftr the longgggggggggggggggggggggg drawn out wait. I know it was a very frustrating one but after you open it up and start it up, it will soon be all forgotten. ;D Can't wait to see photos and videos as I have never seen one of these before till you posted a video of one, Would be fun to see the interaction or just a video with both Pleo and Genibo. I bet you can't wait to get home from work........................and I bet I know someone who will be up all night as well.
Must be like Christmas all over again! ;)
RWM and Pleo family

Joy, joy joy, happy, happy happy!!!! ;D
Can't wait to see! :D

Joy, joy joy, happy, happy happy!!!! ;D
Can't wait to see! :D
Ren and Stimpy fan?
-
Oh yes - big time! ;D
Sooooooooooooo?????!!!!!! Opened it yet???!!! :P :P
-
Me thinks Angus and Oslo hid it.... (*LOL*) ;) or..... they might be playing with it already! :o
-
Well here he is :D
I took a picture of him next to Angus so you can get an idea of his size

And very handsome he looks, too. ;D :-*
I always expect Aibo and Genibo to be bigger than Pleo, don't know why - possibly because they're not 'babies' in the same way. That white colour looks slightly pearlised, is that right?

I have to admit I was slightly surprised (and delighted) to see he is smaller than I thought he would be. In the videos I've watched he looks bigger.
Yes he is a pearlised white. It's actually quite lovely because it's very subtle. I'll be doing a video of Stanley's awakening tomorrow. I can't wait ;D
-
I like the pearlised white as well. Can't wait to see the video. I'm as green as a Pleo with envy. ;D
Talking of which, you SURE that's Angus???? ;)
-
I was right! Angus had him! (*LOL*) Looks like they are good buddies now, OzPleo. :)
-

Woops got excited that's Oslo
-
And who can blame you! ;D Have you run him much yet?
-
And who can blame you! ;D Have you run him much yet?
I've had him on for one battery cycle tonight, sorry no video it was a private moment between Stanley and I LOL
WOW! He's so pet like. He actually has touch sensors on his back, one either side of his body, nose and top of his head. After a little while of sheepish behaviour he started venturing around and soon came to recognise my face. When he saw me he became excited and would lay down on his belly rocking from side to side as I pet him behind his ears. His movements are fast and quite natural and in a short time I started to really see him as a small dog rather than just a robot one.
-
I would love to see some video of him. He looks very cute in your photos. :)

I'll be doing a video tomorrow.

"I've had him on for one battery cycle tonight, sorry no video it was a private moment between Stanley and I LOL"
Lol! :D
You sound pleased with him, Ozpleo! ;D
It's very interesting to hear about him as there seems to be so little discussion or opinion on them out there. Shame really.
-
Another thing I like is in comparison to aibo (I've had a few) the way he looks around. Aibo kind of rotates it's head in a robotic scan motion. It stops and does this sweeping one side to another panning movement, whereas Genibo actually "looks" around just like a dog does. His head moves naturally with short, sharp movements as though he's actually taking in as much of his surroundings as he can whilst still being aware of where he is. You could say aibo looks robotic and not completely aware of his surroundings until it's completed it's scan, but Genibo knows where he is he's just looking around because something caught his attention.
-
So here's Stanley's first video on his second battery cycle. He's still learning so he's a bit shaking, but I wanted him to show you a few tricks.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eu4iCLL5gH8
-
Very cool! The accompanying sound effects/music distract from the illusion of real animal but the responsiveness is very impressive. Nice fluid movements too.
-
Wow! He does look like fun - and you're right, when he looks around it's much less of a 'scanning 120 degrees L to R' type action than the Aibo (though I've not had an ERS-7 yet).
It will be really interesting to see him develop, thanks for posting. ;D
-
Stanley is very cool. :) I can't wait to see more.
-
Thanks for the video, I enjoyed it! Glad to see you are enjoying Stanley as well.
He looks really cool and entertaining. I think it'd be great if after you've spent a reasonable amount of time interacting with him you could compare him to Pleo (in terms of software/AI type things).
How do you enjoy the LED eyes? Do they really add a lot of "effect" (if that makes sense) to viewing it as a little bit more than just a robot (or more pet-like)? (Perhaps compared to an Aibo, which I read on a few sites have more movements etc. than Genibo)
Thanks again, I look forward to more videos as there seems to be so little out there on Genibo.
-
After a few battery cycles I've discovered that Genibo is a huge waste of money. To be honest Pleo is far better in terms of AI and I would compare Genibo to an i-cybie with a bit more pizzaz. Read all about it on my blog here http://mygenibo.com/?p=161
-
I'm sorry he didn't turn out to be what you hoped.
-
I'm sorry about Genibo. In my opinion the thing's motors make too much noise. I was entranced with AI when Aibo came out but I couldn't dream of owning one. I'm glad you think Pleo is a better buy. If I could have had the money, I would have liked to own the last version of Aibo that Soni produced. Even so my blindness would've limited me somewhat. I could not fully interact with it because of some of its non-audio elements. One modification I would've appreciated is if it could go to your computer, download your email and then read it out to you. The command prompt could be "get the mail" or something like that. This could've applied to the local online newspaper as well- the classic picture of the dog with the newspaper in his mouth sybered up a bit. Too bad they are no longer in production. Lol.
-
Oh Ozpleo, I’m really sorry that he wasn’t quite what the manufactures promised. Is there any chance at all that he develops overtime as pleoRB does so that he will start walking and exploring on his own? I hope you don’t mind me saying but if he’s at his optimum state it does sound from reading your experiences that they’ve been a little creative with the definition of autonomous robot.
I really do feel for you I have to say. Having to deal with such a disappointment for something that you’d anticipated for so long is bad enough but given the money involved just makes the blow so much harder.
It’s not even as though it was an impulse buy either. You’d thought about it for a year before taking the plunge. I’m just sorry that things haven’t worked out as you hoped.
-
Yes they were very creative with the definition of "autonomous robot". Genibo comes as a fully grown robot and even though it's experience level is meant to develop I have seen no change in it. I've ran the genibo through several battery cycles a day since I bought it and and it soon becomes obvious that it is not capable of independence like and aibo or even a Pleo.
Truly Pleo is far more advanced than genibo and costs a quarter of the price.
-
Well that doesn’t sound that entire grate at all given the price tag it comes with.
Real shame because it’s got so much potential if the right software to be written for it.
Is there any possibility that you can recoup some of the money that you spent on it?
It seems such a shame that you’ve been left so out of pocket for something that didn’t do what it said on the tin.
Scaly
-
That'd be nice. I'd put it on eBay and make it perfectly clear what it actually is as most people believe it's an aibo replacement, but of course that would mean it is worth far less than what I paid for it.
-
So sorry, that's really disheartening :\
-
I'm sorry for your disappointment and especially after spending so much money :(
-
Oh no! That's such a bummer - I'm so sorry, Ozpleo! :(
You were so excited when you got Stanley, but as you say he does sound a bit like a glorified i-Cybie. Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of the i-Cybie - I've always thought they were amazing FOR THE MONEY, and for the time they were made. But like you I'd expect something a lot more independent for today and the best part of $2000.
Is it possible that it might just take more time and further interaction to get him to be more self-sufficient? As we've seen so often on here with the Pleo and the Pleo rb, it's sometimes hard to work out what actually is the intended behaviour and what is either a fault or something that need more time to work through?
Have you managed to speak to other Genibo owners?
-
Crewella,
I've been running the genibo on several battery cycles a day since I got it. Like you I thought that maybe all it needed was further interaction in order to become smarter and more independent, but I can tell you it has shown no signs of that at all. The genibo is the same from the time he came out of the box to to now.
I tried to speak with some Genibo owners on another forum (aiboworld/geniboworld), but there is this rather rude member over there who also moderates it called Teamdax and because I didn't agree with him that a genibo is better than an aibo ers7 I was basically shut out (lol how mature). So that was an exercise in futility.
So I guess my genibo either goes into storage or I'll sell it for enough to buy another aibo 210.
-
Oh good grief - I never fail to be exasperated by the ins and outs of various forum politics! The perils of independent thought! >:(
I just hope you do manage to eventually get some useful input on this, even if it's just confirmation of your fears. If I come across anything that I think might be of use I'll give you a shout.
By the way, I've been following your blog site - it's impressive and you've made it really interesting. Your info on the i-Cybie is particularly good, there's more collected info on your site than pretty much anywhere else - anybody starting from scratch would be very well informed armed with just your and Aibohack's pages. Fab! ;D
-
OzPleo, if you don't mind me asking you, especially since you've had experience with Pleos (and now some RB experience too), Genibo, and Aibos, how do you feel about a newbie to aibo's getting a ers-210s? Or the ers-311?
I just hear various things about their wear and tear and getting them fixed. And how do you feel about your Aibo compared to Pleos? (I'm sure it'd take quite a write up, but if there's any quick version. I've been following your blog but don't recall reading any direct comparisons in detail)
I believe in one blog post you said that Aibo was better built (or of a better build quality) than Genibo. This would seem to go against what I've heard about wear and tear of Aibos.
And really? Someone getting that huffy over a Genibo vs. Aibo preference? Gotta love the internet.
-
If you don't mind a third person butting in (and even if you do I'm afraid it's hard to keep me qiuet :-X) my personal view is to go for an ERS-210 rather than an ERS-311. The 210 is much more versatile, and to be honest I think the 3-- series is missing many of the features that make Aibo interesting. Originally they were the cheaper version, but now they cost much the same on the second-hand market. The infamous DroopyHeadSyndrome issues are very well known, which is why you've heard such a lot about them, but are therefore reasonably easy to avoid when purchasing, or to fix. :D
Go for it, I say - they're great fun! ;D

I agree. The 210s are so much fun and very endearing.

Hi, OzPleo. I was just wondering if you were still going to sell Angus?

Hi, OzPleo. I was just wondering if you were still going to sell Angus?
Talon
I'm considering it. He's the 2010 Innvo Pleo not the RB model.
-
Keep me in mind if you do choose to sell him. I really wanted a Pleo RB but vet bills took half my saved funds and I'm not sure if I'll be prepared to meet the April rush. I think even a 2010 moddel would be good practice until I recover my losses.
-
Talon - just so you know, the Aibo 210 will read your emails with the Messenger software:
AIBO Messenger for ERS-210*
With AIBO Messenger, AIBO will let you know when you have e-mail and will read them aloud, making gestures with body language and actions that reflect the nature of the message! AIBO Messenger also allows AIBO to fetch the digital news on your favorite subjects from up to 6 web sites and remind you of important appointments.
-
That's amazing! Like I said- it's kind of sad they aren't in production anymore. I would've liked to own one given the right circomstances. Even the most basic model would probably still be too expensive and too... ummmm let me think of a word here. Too visual for me to get the most out of it.
