Title: Long USB cables and serial console
Post by: GarethNelson on August 17, 2010, 05:57:03 PM
So, i've got a 5m USB cable I wanted to use with my pleo.

My plan was to let the pleo wander around while talking to the serial console. Problem is I et missi leters ike tis due to what I assume is a crap signal. I do have an active repeater coming soon, but this makes me wonder - what's the longest cable without a repeater that can be used before it becomes simply impossible?

Sorry I cannot be of assistance, as I most likely do not even understand what you are asking for...Hopefully some of our more tech-advanced members could better guide you..ahem, ahem...

Here's a link for information about cable length limitations defined in the USB specification.

http://www.usb.org/about/faq/ans5 (http://www.usb.org/about/faq/ans5)

If you are using a hub between your Pleo and the computer, you may want to use an externally powered hub versus the cheaper self-powered hubs if you are trying to achieve longer transmission lengths. Some of the self-power hubs have marginal performance capabilities even under the best of circumstances. It is useful to look for the USB certification logo on any USB cables/hubs/etc that you purchase. Some devices out there do not have the logo and their performance again can be substandard.

Well i've got the signal repeater now anyway.......

One other thing i've found is that moving the cable so it doesn't run near power lines helped massively
