Title: As you know... this place is pretty quiet...
Post by: InmemoryofRomeo on June 26, 2010, 05:31:18 PM
The activeness of the forum here, as you all know, has been dropping off a lot recently. Some days there is only one new post and discussion is practically non existent. Some people who come here only come to use the chat room so what do you peeps think? What can be done to make the place more interesting so that more people want to come and have discussions, seek out information and so forth?

What would make you want to visit more and stay for a chat?

Not all things were made to last forever, but hopefully we can revive this forum.

It has been quiet for a few months now, actually.

Perhaps it's the fact that our base\original members have not been here posting often; when base\original members post, normally the other\newer members follow right after them.

Or maybe there just hasn't been much activity with Pleo lately.......

I think we need to get back to Weedovia and build our little pleo community. I'm quilty of too much Farmvilliing and Frontiervilling myself. My little dinos have been a little neglected, lately, and perhaps we can do some type of imaginery Weedoviaing here.

Still trying to come up with a Pleo Mobile for my herd. I had a wagon, Made of nylon fabric, but returned it because of a chemical odor that was a little too strong for me. I need a light weigh wagon or something to bring my dinos out in public once again. I really miss doing that. Any suggestions?

What about an old pram Fancy :) Or a little red wagon :) Or you could do what I do and rope in a few rellies to carry one each :D

Allo, you are one of the older members ;) How about reviving your 'dino school' or posting a random facts thread on dinos?

I noticed about a month ago ( at least) that things seemed to be really getting very very s-----l----o----w. I wasn't' sure if it is " normal" for this time of year, or if it is something new. I know people have other things to do in their lives, besides talking Pleo, but I think that when you love something as much as Pleo owners seem to do, and I do, that you make the time to check the forum every few days and make a post, post a photo or make a comment, it doesn't take much longer than reading an email, or do it while drinking a coffee, tea, etc.
I know one thing that has disappointed me is the " photo contest" and having it extended and still after the extension again, still no word on what is happening with that. I noticed there was some enthusiasm for posting photos and things were looking good, but there has been nothing new on how to vote, etc, it is a " dead Post"? JWhen things like this get posted, it draws interst, but if it is not completed to the end, it is discouraging and people that come to visit are probably also wondering what happened? I am glad that there is a new contest, and I am sure it will have a better ending than the first one.
I think fancy is right about getting more things going in weedovia, some kind of interst something somewhere. I myself have not posted as much as I don't want to be the only one to post and it would be easy to post videos but I am hoping there is more discussion from others. I would be very happy to be a part of Weedovia enterprise whatever it may be. I do have a friend for Nova but I haven't even decided if it is female or male, let alone names.I was hoping to get some more videos of them both and I can compare what they do and their differences so I can post questions here, but I haven't had the time I would like yet, only because my husband spends more time at home than he used to, and he doesn't " play with my Pleos" like I do. I have to do it when he is not around so I can be uninterrupted. It looks like I am going to be posting more videos and photos just to get some response going.
I think Pleo is getting even more popular but you wouldn't know it by looking at the forums here. :(I even thought opening the battery store would get some response, but so far, my only response has been by people outside the forums, thought I do admit it has only been about a week that I have been open here.I really hope this forum is around for a long time to come, I would hate to lose all my friends I feel that Nova and I have made.

Hmmm, I hadn't realized that Ms Nova's battery shop was up and running. I had seen some new battery photos loaded but when I went to look in the mall at the time i didn't see anything there.  I figured there would be an announcement once it was ready but missed it if there was. I notice that the announcement at the top of the forums still mentions the closing of the old shop, not the new one.

I too enjoy the various contests and have been waiting to see who won the last one. I hope to get an entry in for the new one too.

I pop in to the check the forums typically every day, but don'f always feel like I have anything useful or interesting to contribute. I was hoping to get a comparison of the three different OSes and what I like/dislike about each once I have had them all running together long enough.

A Weedovia project/game sounds like fun; I like the sounds of the little community and some form of game, quest or similar would be great.

Along the lines of the photo contests and the Bob Project, what about a photographic scavenger hunt where the goal is to find specific objects/landmarks  and take photos of them with our Pleos as proof? Our camera club does something like that, usually to demonstrate new techniques we learned during the past season, usually minus any Pleos though.

Thank you for the input and suggestions everyone, its great to hear what everyone has to say :) RWM, please don't avoid posting because you don't want to be the only one, leading by example is wonderful, I love reading random posts :) Shadowmice, the photo idea is a good one, although categories would have to be generic to cater for different countries and a game might be possible, I will start looking into that :)
Title: Re: As you know... this place is pretty quiet...
Post by: allosaurus on June 28, 2010, 05:31:23 AM
I feel similarly to RWM, but a little different; I personally now dislike posting so much because I usually have nothing to say.  A  thread appropriate of saying "nice job" has normally had that said about a dozen times already.  I would help people that had Pleo problems, unfortunately I am non-understanding of that kind of technology.  I would make some new threads, but all the threads I make don't get many posts.  Most of all, I feel like I am often being downright ignored (I am under the suspicion that it is because I am one of the very youngest members).

But that's just me.  Anyone else feel that way?

Perhaps, if more than one person feels this way, that in itself will strip down the forum and leave nothing for anyone to reply to, hence making the forum VERY quiet and slow.

But at this point I'm doubting anyone feels much like me. :\

Post by: shadowmice on June 28, 2010, 02:28:20 PM
Hey Allo - I'm sorry you think you are being ignored; it's certainly not my intent to ignore anyone here. I'm usually a pretty limited poster in general and only do so if I think I have something truly helpful, encouraging, or new to add to existing knowledge.  In fact it has only been a recent thing for me to participate in any forums at all.  I can relate to your feeling about repeating "me too" type posts; I see others have often posted similar sentiments expressed often better than what I can so it seems redundant to throw in my feeble addition.

I was looking for some of your recent topics to see what they were about but my skill using the search feature seems to be pretty limited; I didn't seem to find much from recent times.  I'm sure that, since we are a pretty diverse group here, we won't all share the same interests about all the same things. I would like to assume that if I posted something that received limited response that either it was simply not a topic of interest to others or that everyone was too busy at the time and it got lost in subsequent postings. I can understand that if it were to happen often, I would tend to feel ignored too.

I have noticed that there seems to be a small core group who communicate regularly on here - if they are busy and unable to respond to new posts, the forums get very, very quiet. I normally don't jump in on support questions by newbies since my experience and knowledge is very minor compared to some here; but I suppose at times it is better to at least provide something however minor just so they know they are not being ignored and that someone is interested in what they have to say or the problems they are encountering. I will try to be a little more proactive when I can; I value the knowledge on these forums and would hate to see them disappear due to a lack of participation.

Allo no one was deliberately ignoring you I can assure you, although I confess that I steer well clear of any topics covering these new fandangled fads like Manga :P They are out of my knowledge base and I don't feel I would be able to contribute to any discussions on them. On the other hand the threads you post where you pick your B'day and shirt color and so on and come up with some rediculas saying are always a blast :) And perhaps Allo I could get you to revive a new 'Would you rather thread' with the rules up the top so everyone knows how to play, I know a lot of members here enjoyed that game. (I know Gucci started it but he seems to be dreadfully absent these days due to his other commitments.) I'm afraid any posts in the Fantasy section will go under my radar since I can't see it, but I read every post made on the forum proper and reply where I can.

You are right Shadowmice, there is a small group of us who are regulars, but it doesn't mean others can't become regulars too :) Please by all means post on new threads where people need help, if you don't know the answer even letting them know that their question is acknowledged is a big help. I know when I am new to a forum I appreciate those little things very much (yup we were all newbies once, remember how it feels?)

As it stands we are the only major Pleo forum left and people do come here looking for help but it doesn't mean we can't have some fun too, we have areas for general chat about anything (within reason of course) so by all means post about your favorite hobbies as well :)

I check the forum every single day, but mostly I don't come any further then the "Show Unread Posts" page looking at the topics.
They are all about personal issues or "off topic" matters that are are not of interest to me.
Speaking of interest, despite the fact that Pluriel has her new battery she is being pretty much neglected. Just like Diesel by the way.
It must be over a month now that either were woken up and they just sit there, every day. In sight.
But when I come home I am usually just too tired or I have other plans for the rest of the afternoon.
My interest in technology jumps around like a kangaroo. Something can be really in favor and I'll spend a lot of time on it, but then interest fades and I move on to the next coolest thing / gadget.
Like some, I don't feel like the need to post anything about anything most of the time.

Does Pleo Cafe have a holiday thread yet? Now that's an idea. For instance, I went to the US of A for two weeks and came back last week. That way members have an idea what is going on (and may also explain a part of the quietness) with everyone and when they will be absent for a while.

Poor Plurial, that's a long nap! Hope you let her stretch her legs soon ;) I would direct you to the holiday thread but I see you already found it :)  You know that you can always start a new thread, many of us here enjoy lots of tech talk even if it isn't Pleo related ;) I love gadgets as much as the next person, my latest 'toy' is my iPad but there's always room for Pleo too, that is one piece of technology that has done a really good job of keeping my attention :)

It's a shame if anyone feels, like Allo, that their post has been ignored, but I think it's just one of the hazards of posting on forums sometimes.  I'm still a relative newcomer, but I'll certainly try to 'do my bit' and respond to posts -  I get a manic fortnight in every six where I'm busy at work, but for the rest of the time I try to get on here and post most days. :)

I think part of the problem there may be our older demographic, many members here are over eighteen and have different interests, I'm sure some of us have no clue who Yuffie is or what Manga is which are things that Allo likes...
Title: Re: As you know... this place is pretty quiet...

The only thing I can say is, it's probably because there hasn't been a lot of new things about Pleo as of late. And Shadowmice is right, too. Our core group is really made of about, oh, I dunno, ten members maybe, that have become closer and have gotten to know each other. Not to mention the fact that most newbies don't post much; veyr rarely do we ever get someone who actually posts more than five times. I miss the old days.
I was never a huge fan of Manga myself, but I do know who Yuffie is. :P
This forum is Pleo-based, and since we're running out of new things about Pleo we're also running out of things to say. I really do wish Jetta would snap to it and start doing things really worth mentioning (the only particualrly notable things I can recall Jetta having done are making a slightly modified version of Pleo and coming out with the Pleo cape. Can't go on about those forever).
And since when did we ignore you, Allo!?
.....Well, to be honest, I have felt the same way at times.....
Anyway. I guess my only feeble hope is that Summer vacation will bring new people, more time to post, and new things to post about.

IMR's right, and I hang my elderly head in shame - I do know what Manga is, but I'm afraid I'm utterly at a loss with 'Yuffie'! :-\

Thanks Fancy, glad to be back.

At the moment, it appears the forums are thriving with new members and that is always a plus. Has anyone else had any ideas on how it may be possible to increase our traffic?

I think I've also heard someone mention this and that would be a good idea. Perhaps further word from the admins might clarify that issue. On another hand, I think I have also heard of a photo scavenger hunt sort of idea. Any thoughts on this one?

I like the scavenger hunt idea, its just a question of how many people we could get to join in, the Bob project isn't doing so well :(

I've started a few photo threads, they aren't quite a plog but at least it encourages the sharing of experiences. Of course anyone could start a thread like that on here, just to share experiences :)

I would love to send in some photos for the BOB PROJECT, my only question is if I could use NOVA with her poor broken neck as a stand in for BOB? She either has her neck  dangling, or she has tape on her poor neck to keep her head up, either way she won't look like a " healthy Bob" what is the ruling on that you think, as I just took a trip to another state and have photos, but not sure if I could enter the photos or not? :(Poor Nova, ) and I havent' used her " friend " yet, as he is in Perfect order but love my NOva, and hate to keep her out of the photos just because she is a " special needs Pleo."
 What do you think IMR?

For a scavenger hunt, possibly pick a list of items to take pics of our Pleo(s) with, set a timeframe to complete the "collection", then the question is how do you determine who wins - first to get all items could make it hard for some to have a chance. Most creative combo of pictures? Points per scarcity/difficulty of item?  I would lean towards specific items instead of places since places would be more like the Bob Project and we wouldn't want to take away from that. But as IMR indicated, what items would be common enough to be found in a variety of countries to ensure everyone has a fair chance to play?

Examples of possible items: Traffic sign (40pts); dish of local cuisine (15pts); Favorite book (5pts); another animal (dog, cat, ferret, etc) (10pts); a robotic toy (20pts) .....  and that's about the limit of my creativity at the moment, sorry.  ???

Unfortunately my Pleos are not well traveled so we are not able to participate in the Bob Project (yet. I will get brave enough to take them out and about one day! Just not sure of the reactions to expect around here and I would never want them to get hurt by accident or malfeasance.)

And I still have to create a submission for the summer Friends contest..... oh, to be a more creative individual!  The muse is lacking of late.

@ RWM I'm sure Bob would be most understanding of Nova's condition and would happily have her as a stand-in just so long as her neck bandage/brace is kept to a minimum (especially if she is wearing pink ;)).

@ Gucci, a scavenger hunt would of course require someone to run it. When Melinda heads home on the weekend I will consider how it can be done and see if I can't get something organized :) However given the current levels of participation in site events I get the feeling that it would not be overly successful in the long term, although I will be willing to put up a trial if Mweed is happy enough to let us try it. It could of course work hand in hand with the Bob Project.

A Pleobook however would be an awful lot more difficult, I don't know what it currently costs to run this site but anything that requires a lot of bandwidth is going to require more money to run and something like a facebook site would require advertising, creating and so forth on more than just a casual basis.

Ok, thanks IMR,Nova and I are making it our promise and duty to post at least one Bob Project every other week, we may go crazy though in the beginning, As for the neck brace, she is currently just wearing a thin " camouflage" layer, thanks to the tape that fancy has sent me and it seems to work for Nova. Hmmm, pink huh.... %)May go well with her pink tutu ballet outfit, but I don't know of a ballet company in town that I could use, but I will keep it in mind... ;) Thanks IMR, Nova and I thank you for the " heads up " go do it encouragement.

I like the idea of the scavenger hunt.   But we would need to come up with a fair way to judge that isn't simply the first one to get all the pictures.  We have done similar things for birthday parties where we would divide up people into groups of two or three, give each a digital camera and turn them loose at the mall.  The trick to make it interesting is to have some of the items not be so obvious (i.e., give clues to what you want them to find so that they have to figure it out.  Then when they turn in their pictures if they guessed wrong, they have to go back out and try again.  And to keep it FUN, some of the pictures require being goofy and/or doing things that might seem embarrassing (i.e., the kids are at the mall and one of the pictures might be to take a picture with a banana in your ear or balancing a box on your head while riding the escalator or the picture would require them talking some sales person into doing something for the picture . . . ).

But participation is probably always going to be an issue.  What we want (when you look at the title of this topic) are things that will get more people active and posting.

I wondered if it might be an idea to try something a bit more directly Pleo orientated?  There were a flurry of posts around the time of the OS2 upgrade, and quite a few people seemed happy to report back and give their opinion rather than just download-and-run.  I think most people come here originally hoping to learn stuff about their Pleo and how it works, I certainly did, so maybe if we tried asking visitors to reports on certain issues, or even post pics and videos?  IMR was asking for a video of behaviour recently, and I learnt a lot from the resulting posts - maybe asking for people's experiences of something like colour recognition, or comparisons of how Pleos sleep in the various OS available, might encourage people to get involved and post more?

We could even think up 'experiments' and ask people to try them and post pics or videos of their attempts, or even make a competition out of that maybe?  Or is that too much work?.........dunno.......just a thought!   Many regulars here  might have been through this sort of thing already, but I'm still a relative beginner as a Pleo parent, and I'm sure there must be many others out there at the steep end of the learning curve!:D

I like this idea too, and even though I did not like Nova with the 2.0 OS, and downgraded her to the old one, I would like to do more testing with her on things like this, I have only had her since this past Dec. so I consider myself a " new Pleo" parent but feel as if she and I are old friends, and I would like to experiement and record the differences between Nova and her new Friend, who I have had since late May, and still have not named!
I still think Nova is Special and very unique, but don't we all! :D

Hi Fancy, I have had that idea wandering in my head, ( it may have got lost a little in the cobwebs... :D) I am tending to think of either Native American Names or like you said an astronomy name would be nice too, I am thinking of having a contest, just trying to decide how to have it fair for everyone and all the particulars and what may be the prize....I have to mull it over in my head a bit but I have been thinking of that myself, thanks for the suggestion. I wonder what others would think of it? Also in other languages, Nova for example also means something else in Native American, ( have to look it up to get it just right) but the NOVA I list the meaning for is the meaning easiest to understand and remember, and of coure, I do think of her as ' A Bright Shining Star", don't you agree?
