Title: Gupi the Guinea pig
Post by: ScribbleMonkey on May 09, 2010, 04:14:01 PM
This looks really cute, and apparently has been out since 2003. but a web search revealed very little info

Any of our UK posters have or seen a Gupi? I was thinking of importing one But it would be close to 100$ US after shipping.

Not cheap for what they are.

I disagree. Gupi is, comparitively to other robots in the market, great value. While it may not be mechanically or visually as appealing as some; it has various stages of learning, detects light, maps out the room and in later stages even comes when you call him.
Each Gupi has its own little personality and our one often gets depressed when being left for long periods of time.

While it is in not as sophisticated as Pleo, for only 3 times the price of a Zhu Zhu pet you have a guinea pig that is far superior.

Many parents have given these to children who have lost real guinea pigs. Truly a pet without the poop.

Thanks to a wonderful helpful person here on the forums I was fortunate enough to get a Gupi robotic guinea pig recently, the adult one not the baby. The cute little guy came all the way from the UK! Quite a trip for a little guinea pig so he was a bit peckish when he got here ;) (You charge him with a carrot).

A bit about Gupi, he can only be purchased in the UK, he can make 30 different sounds, has the ability to be put to sleep, he is endlessly attracted to his carrot which acts as a charger and a homing device and he is able to memorize a room and avoid obstacles. There is a short (read two minute) baby phase and he can be reset anytime. He does apparently have emotions but they aren't particularly evident.

I have to say he's quite a chipper little fellow, he's definitely a boy, but he doesn't yet have a name as I will be letting the children at school name him. His response to the carrot is excellent and his obstacle detection is really good. However he's a cheeky little thing, likely to get himself lost under the bed, or end up behind my desk and in all other manner of hard to reach places :P Anyway here he is meeting the gang, unfortunately Pleakley's battery ran out just before I started filming, and Stitch's battery needs replacing so he kept stopping and starting but Gupi on the other hand was bright and chirpy.

For a cheap robot, less than $30 plus postage he is quite an amusing little thing.

Gupi's are really hard to film when you're used to filming Pleos!!  :D  :moose:

Poor Gupi - the 'obstacles' kept moving!  ;)

As you say, for a cheap robot they do have some cute features.  I love the way the tech is incorporated into their eyes, and the way you flip them onto their back to control the volume.  :)

He is very cute.  :)  Faster than I thought he would be too.  I'm sure if I were ever to get one he would very quickly become my cats favorite robot.  :D  He buzzes around so much he's almost begging to be chased  :P

Haha nah it wasn't bad enough to need motion sickness pills, but I know some of my own clips sure are :goofy:

Yours is so much more vocal than mine, mine will only make noise if it is touched. They are so fast, yours is also able to go on the carpet fine but mine will not move. Seems we have the same carpet so maybe mine is defective :( I do like him though. It was cute when it went under the Pleo's tails :D

Hehe indeed. Gupi is hopeless on carpet because the fur on the belly causes too much friction when Gupi tries to turn or go backwards. So my Gupi was quickly given a shave :-X I removed the fur on his belly, it's just a piece of fur fabric, easy to replace, although I have to say that without it he's not nearly as efficient as a duster :P

I really like Gupi!  It seems really cute for kids.  I'll have to keep my eye on ebay.  I have only seems the baby ones, but the adult ones seems much nicer.  Do you think it is suitable for a soon to be 4 year old?  My daughter's room has hardwood floors.  If I kept his belly fur, he could be like a mini roomba!   :P

Gupi would be fine for a four year old, he seems quite sturdy. She'd probably need help with charging him, and of course needs to know not to throw him but aside from that one would be fine :)

Congrats, IMR! He sounds verry cute. He's not for me, though- only because I'm afraid I'd step on him. I had one run-in with a Zhu Zhu pet and he and I were hurt during the process. I came through my front door and he whizzed out from behind it and ran over my foot. I had no clue what he was, and guys? Don't turn me in to the robotic police. I kicked while he was still on my shoe and he struck the wooden bar thingy that runs under our coffee table. When he landed he was humming softly and... well let's just say my nephew wanted to beat me. I felt really bad.

I really think these guys are awesome!  The baby ones remind me of a ZuZu pet however. The adult ones really seem to be hard to come by.  There are some on eBay, but they only ship within the UK, as IMR eluded to earlier.  My daughter went nuts over your video, IMR!  Maybe I'll be able to find one for her birthday in July. (Little Inu is hiding in his box for Easter) :).
