Title: Jumping beans
Post by: Torterenek on September 22, 2013, 02:38:18 PM
Has anyone seen or owned Mexican Jumping Beans? I managed to find some from www.jbean.com at my local dollar store. I really like these kind of pets.

Haha! I have. I've had one set of them. They came in a tiny plastic box. I got them at some sort of welcome-center type place when I was little. They're little moth larvae I think.

They are moth larvae. The eggs are laid on the flowers, then the baby bugs hatch and burrow into the seeds, or beans. When it is time, they break out of the shell and fly away, if they live that long, to continue the cycle.

Were they dead, or did they manage to escape?

I had them when I was a little girl and that was a long time ago. They were fun to watch. Never did see a moth come out of them.

Mine all died I think. I don't remember having any instructions on how to care for them until they pupated.

I read on a bean website that you need to moisten them every week to keep them alive. That is the most you need to do for them. Some people cut a hole in the bean to see the health of the silk worms inside. Then the bugs will seal it themselves with silk.
