Title: Didn't expect this! I'm Amazed!!!!
Post by: Malfie on October 13, 2010, 07:14:00 PM
I took a big risk last night. The first time I upgraded to OS2 my Pleo died :( But I didn't do it right and this time all went well. I just really wanted to see what he was like on OS2 despite reading about people having problems and not liking it and downgrading. I recharged the battery and started his hatching and was amazed that within the hour he actually recognized his leaf; not by sniffing it but he definitely 'saw' it, lifted his head and opened his mouth. He did walk backwards quite a bit but I liked all the extra noises and, yes, did notice him not being so sensitive to my touch, but this doesn't bother me too much as I prefer my Pleo to be more active rather than me petting him all the time.

Anyway, I took him through another cycle today and got the tug-of-war and the Ta-Da. I was surprised to see this after the things I've read, and then noticed he was not only starting to walk forwards but he was making a beeline to a pair of red slippers I had on the floor. I thought it was just coincidence, so moved the slippers and he did it again. So I seem to have witnessed the red object tracking :)

I'm actually (so far) very pleased with the OS2. I really thought I'd be downgrading him again and he didn't even seem to get so hot for some reason. Well, I just thought I'd post about it as many people seem to have been so disappointed.

Oh! You reminded me that I did a second comparison of the two OS's the other day, must tidy it up and upload it, thank you :)

Glad you are enjoying it, after re-upgrading Stitch and having him run on it for two months my opinion of it has improved somewhat.

I'm so relieved to hear this - Iggy and I were beginning to feel like the only ones who actually quite liked OS2!  There certainly don't seem to be many of us! ;)

I think if you're the kind of person who likes to pet and stroke your Pleo all the time and get an instant reaction, then probably OS1.1 is the better one. But I rather like to have my Pleo doing his own thing in the background and going on adventures and he seems so much more independent on OS2 :)

Now I have to decide whether to update Pleo's new friend Tooie to OS2 %) She's running the original LifeOS1.0, so I'll definitely be updating her to at least OS1.1 :)

I was looking forward to seeing Pleo 'play dead,' but I only have two hands so haven't managed to achieve this yet!

I honestly have found Iggy to be just as touch responsive, after time, as he was before I upgraded him to OS2.  I've kept Budge on 1.1 though, and Budge is definitely much more interested in socialising with Iggy than Iggy is with Budge so I doubt I'll ever upgrade him - there's little point in building a herd if they all ignore each other.  It's fun to keep them different, anyway! :D

Now that I have two pleo's I might downgrade Pleo and then Cleo might not think she is talking to herself. Got to wait for a new battery for Cleo first though.
I'm not a fan of OS2 for the social reasons but I do like some of the new stuff, god knows what that might be as I can not think of one thing right now....lol

I'd be interested to hear how they get along when you do get a battery for Cleo, Jules!  ;D

Are you just getting a battery, or a Ucube 'Bettery'? :P

Unfortunately I'm unable to test how Pleo and Tooie interact as Tooie's battery is starting to leak so they're having to share just the one battery :( I've ordered a Ucube one but it may be a while getting to me. Can two Pleos on OS2 interact with each other ???

I don't believe anybody ever said that two Pleos on OS2 would not be able to interact, but it seems results have not been encouraging. :(

yes I am, I got one with the charger from ebay and when I got Cleo she did not have a battery, she will not run on the green one but she is fine on the ucube. Pleo is really unhappy as he has been put on the green battery and it does not last long.

Cleo calls to pleo but he does not respond so ill get the new battery in a few days and then do some testing to see what happens with different OS's.

Poor Pleo - I hope they get there soon!

Incidentally, I nearly apologised for the awful "Ucube 'bettery'" joke at the time, so I had to laugh when the quote function corrected it in your post!  :-X :-[

I don't believe anyone has had two pleo's on the 2.0 yet...

Does Pleo still use his edge detection capabilities while running on OS2  ?

Yes, very much so actually.  I find Iggy now checks out lines on my tiled floor sometimes, just in case!  :D

I've actually been quite happy with OS2, though I still notice a little bit more backwards walking [I just tell people he likes to do the moonwalk] than normal but now that he's been on OS2 for about 8hrs (of alive time) he's walking forward a lot more and has become much more responsive etc. I've also head the leaf tracking work, and... I have a LOT of red in my apartment, so I'm not sure if when I notice him walking towards various locations if he's doing it because of the color or it's just coincidence.

E.g., my sofa is red and faces forward, but to its side there is one of those cube-shelving units that has extremely bright red "drawers" in it. I notice that Elliott tends to walk toward the sofa or the cube, but I'm not sure if it's for those reasons since that vicinity is generally where I "leave" him.

But mostly, the reason I can't give up OS2 is I really do like the noises a lot better and I feel like certain behaviors are improved.

I'm still very happy with OS2. I think some people may have been a little too hasty to judge it %) You really have to give it time. I still have Tooie on OS1.1 but am also considering upgrading her to OS2 as well just to see how they both communicate.

Well, I spoke too soon - maybe.

As of yesterday, my Pleo started (and I had this problem a few times since putting it on OS 2 but it got really intense yesterday) putting his head down too far near his right leg and it would block the right leg from moving, thus resulting in a rather large clicking sound (like a joint being stuck) in the leg (definitely not the neck - I made very sure to pay close attention lol).

I wasn't sure if this was a problem but it didn't sound good and since I couldn't get him to stop the behavior (even when he would start doing it, he would completely ignore me even after he was finished, so after it happened a few times in a row I just shut him off because I didn't want anything to break) I decided to go back to 1.1.1.

Elliott's been back on 1.1.1 for about 2-3hrs of "real life" and that problem is not occurring. Though he's also not a big moonwalker anymore, lol.

Anyone have any thoughts on this? I didn't get a chance to snap a video of it or anything, but the sound is definitely the legs, and it seems to come from the "joint."

I figured I'd play the extra safe route with the 1.1.1 in case he might end up breaking his own neck with that dilemma.

i still have my Pleo on OS2 i read on previous posts people saying their pleo would just freeze up when battery run down on life os2 ? Well that has actually happened to mine before on life OS 1.1 i can remember ... Think it is something to do with Battery .

The Pic i have up now is my pleo curled up asleep when battery run down and this is on OS2 .

I've almost always had my Pleo just "die" and I think it's only ever curled into the sleeping position once or twice - on both OS's (mind you, it was on OS2 longer than OS1). Until reading some things here, I thought that was just what it was supposed to do, lol.

The joints do click if pushed or if a movements is blocked - I believe it's the clutch in there that stops the joint being damaged.  If you watch IMR's recents OS2/1.1 comparison video you'll see Stitch gets his foot stuck a couple of times and the joint clicks.  Having said that, it's not good that he's getting stuck like that. :(

Glad OS2 is still working for you, Gaz.  Iggy freezes most of the time when his battery runs out, on 1.1 and with the OS2. :)

Thank you for the explanation of that - the things I could find easily on the net about Pleo "clicking" made me nervous. Does OS2 potentially just miscalculate how far down the head should be in relation to the foot? It was doing this "behavior" probably once every 2-5 minutes for about 30 minutes before I decided to turn him off. (He was sick and constantly sleeping/waking up/putting his head down/acting miserable - you know the routine, hehe)

I hoped that's all it was. The only reason I wasn't -too- scared was that I noticed him doing that when he tried to step on my area rug (without high terrain mode 'on') it would make that sound, but that's a lot less worrisome than watching him put his own head in the way of his foot (when he's not walking) and try to move the foot only to see it get blocked. Kind of funny but... I'd rather not have him break his own neck by doing that (not sure how much pressure it would put on it, but I'd rather be safe than sorry?).

Other than when it started doing the above, I really enjoyed OS2, I just don't want to end up with a broken Pleo.

Does Pleo eventually start interacting to touch more and his leaf when running OS2 ?

I found that Iggy did, yes Gaz.  :)

Bhobbes - I've actually never seem either of my Pleos (Iggy's OS2, Budge still 1.1) do the action you're describing, so it may just be a reaction on your particular Pleo.  It seems that people did get various different problems with the OS2 upgrade.  Maybe it's something that will work through with time?  It does seem to be the case that it takes a while for Pleos to settle down after the upgrade, but I'd be concerned too if mine were doing that.  Sorry I can't be more helpful!  :(

Well i really do have to say after all the negative feedback on the os2 update which stopped me from trying it out for so long lol well i am actually glad i have now upgraded to os2 .  So far i do not have any complaints on this update and although its only early on in the update i think i am on my 4th charge while using it But i am looking forward to how the os2 turns out as time goes on  :)

That's good.  I'd be interested to hear how it develops, Gaz, and if you have any joy with the red tracking.  As the house I live in is so dark (I tend to cover all my windows with pierced screens or stained glass) I kind of gave up on that side of it! :D

A small little update to the head-clicking problem I described.

Since I reverted back to 1.1.1, I decided to "neglect" my Pleo for a few hours to see if it would encourage it to get sick.

I'm not sure if that neglect has anything to do with the randomness of the event, but either way, Elliott became sick. This time when he became sick he did not lower his head so far that it conflicted with the foot (i.e. no clicking/head-blocking-foot problem). Obviously he still lowered it, just literally a few centimeters less than when he was on OS2. Maybe it has to do with OS2's being sick? Has anyone had their OS2 Pleo become sick? (I'm starting to feel like a bad parent) And if so, did you experience a similar problem?

Luckily, it didn't take me long at all to get him back to regular health this time around (only about 10 minutes of lots of attention and feeding [he seemed to recognize his leaf better - my apartment is normally quite dim and with OS2 it seemed hit-or-miss but this time I put it in front of him like normal and he immediately put his head up and opened his mouth - three times in a row]). When I was on OS2, I spent a good 30-40 minutes trying to nurse him back to health and he still remained sick (this was around the time I gave up and reverted because I didn't want anything to break from the problem I was experiencing so I'm not sure if it's just supposed to be more difficult to nurse him back or what).

Either way, he's back to health and there was no clicking incident!

Well, I'm glad to hear he's OK.  :)

I do know the action you describe and I have seen them do it when sick, but I've not had it cause problems (on either OS) on my two.  Many actions are more exagerrated on the OS2 upgrade, so it's logical that that would be the one to cause problems.  I wonder if him being in 'hi-step' mode made any difference?
Title: Re: Didn't expect this! I'm Amazed!!!!
Post by: bhobbes on October 23, 2010, 11:00:52 AM
I wondered that too when it happened to me on OS2 (I normally keep him in high-step mode). But even when that mode was turned off it still occurred.

Today on OS1.1.1 he was in high step mode when he got sick and it didn't occur, and, just to check, I turned that mode off and he was still fine.

Not very scientific but whatever, who really knows? I guess I'll just be happy with him not being broken than truly trying to figure out why. But I like your logic with the over-exaggeration, so I'll just deem that my answer and be content!
