Title: 2010 Fall Tomato Harvest Festival
Post by: Sally on September 13, 2010, 03:45:24 PM
Well, now that the scavenger hunt is over . . .

 :o  :o It the 2010 Fall Tomato Harvest Festival  :o  :o

Since the beginning of recorded history (about three years ago), the fields around Weedovia have always been blessed with abundant wild tomato vines.  And every spring and every fall, the local pleos relied on the abundant harvest gathered from these wild vines to enjoy throughout the year.  They would go out twice a year to pick the tomatoes and bring them into the village.  This traditional gathering of the tomatoes quickly grew into a community event, and from there into true full-blown harvest festival.  And with the introduction of the spaghetti trees and pizza by the great Pepperoni, a real zest was added to the festivities.

Of course in modern times, with the addition of a carnival, rides, games, live band, and midnight movie on the town square, it has become more of a social event, attracting pleos from around the world.  But all the pleos still go out and harvest the tomatoes and bring them to the town's communal tomato press for the traditional squashing of the tomatoes and the making of the tomato sauce.

Not sure what's going on?  Well, then you may want to catch up by reading about the spring and fall festivals in the Bob the Pleo comic strips (http://bobthepleo.com/forums/index.php?topic=3.110).  But as a quick summary,  the town's park is turn into the festival grounds, with the carnival rides and games, a stage and dance floor, and lots of vendors and food booths!  It starts on a Friday night with the carnival and music from a live band, and at midnight the pleos end the day with an outdoor movie.  Saturday has everyone out in the fields gathering the tomatoes, with the judging in the evening, and back to the carnival.  Sunday is the big tomato squashing where the sauce is made using the traditional foot-stomping method like the great Italian wines.

And at the conclusion of the festival, awards are always handed out to the pleo who gathers the most tomatoes, finds the largest tomato, has the best looking tomatoes, makes the best tasting spaghetti sauce, and for the best use of tomatoes as an article of clothing (i.e., costume).  The last few years winners can be seen by visiting the Bob the Pleo comics.  We had some great fun, and some wonderful costumes!

For those interested in participating in the contests, please refer to the contest rules topic (http://bobthepleo.com/forums/index.php?topic=792.0) on this board.   For some ideas and/or to get a better understanding, you can check out the 2010 Spring festival topic (http://bobthepleo.com/forums/index.php?topic=1154.0) or the 2009 Fall festival topic (http://bobthepleo.com/forums/index.php?topic=794.0) (also on this board).  You can also read up on the Bob the Pleo comic strip! Wink

This fall's festival runs Friday October 1st to Sunday October 3rd, 2010 (that's only three weeks away . . .).  And if you keep up with the comic strip, it looks like Sally is back in charge this time!   8)

Post your entries here!

Hey Fancy, do any of your Band members have any " sore toes", from having their feet stepped on like you? :D LOL ( couldnt resist) Mayby this year I will have my trio,( 4 if you count the First Hatch....) make up a band, perhaps a singing trio, I can see Nova as a sultry Nightclub singer all slinky in her Pleo dress and wearing her long hair, and two males, crooing alongside her...very funny thought and image. Can't wait to see your babies and the song of choice couldnt be any better, I love that song, so romantic and nostalgia!

Iggy's suit is perfect for the evening! :) :) :)

RWM, I cringe on the thought of anyone stepping on my toes at the moment. :o :o :o. Just had a little surgery on my big toenails, hopefully to prevent ingrown toenails ever growing back.  This is the third time! :(  Stubborn toe nails! ;D

Good grief, Gucci - that's big enough to give a Pleo nightmares!! :o :o

Especially the poor Pleos on smushing duty! :D

It never fails, when four pleos get together, there's bound to be a disagreement in something. Peeky picked out some mighty strange, but colorful tomatoes for improving a ready made sauce. They may look weird, but they cost$$$ :o
Not too sure if J.C., Pennie, and LOA are sure about these. They are good sports and will go along with Peeky.

Quite right too - Peeky is a Pleo that knows his tomatos!  I do understand though, fancy - I can't even get two Pleos to agree half the time!  Cute pic! :D

We can't imagine what is going to be inside these tomatoes. They are called heirloom or ugli tomatoes. Some of the weirdest shapes I've ever seen. ;D

Gucci, that is one big peice pizza pie in the sky, amore, lotta pizza or pasta sauce there, enough I would say for the Whole Town of Weedovia, and the whole Festival. Hands down it is the biggest tomato I have ever seen, Like Fancy said, that would be a nightmare........are you sure that it is not an escapee of the " Revenge of the Killer Tomatoes"? :o                RedwoodsMama and Team Nova

Wow, only three weeks, looks like Nova and the three boys are going to be busy getting ready for the festival, and I better get out and about with Tomato costume ideas. Nova is the easy one, but with two or three boys, that is another story all around, really got to get my thinking cap on this year. This will be my second festival, but my first fall tomato festival, and I still better start now or I will have to much on my plate at the last minute. Looks like with all the new members, there will be more participation than there was for the Spring Festival.

Of course we have a plethora of smiley faces to pick from.  We used to switch quite often.  But not all the sets were as popular . . . . (http://bobthepleo.com/forums/Smileys/ellow_yellow_christmas_edition/cheesy.gif)

:D  Love the tomato smileys!  But OMG.......is that a PLEO smiley I can see there!!! :o

Iggy has been practicing his saxophone, and I'm sorry guys but I have no idea what that thing is but Budge found it and Budge wants to play it, so there it is!  Poor Iggy had his head in his paws with horror at first - it's NOT COOL apparently!

Why Crewella, looks like Budge found the Pleo ancientl Harpsicord. and a very nice one too? Has he had many lessons or is he just naturally talented?
I think he and Iggy will make a good addition to the music festivities this weekend!

Thanks RWM - I hope so!

And thanks to Fancyfont, who identified the mystery object as an autoharp (albeit a very basic version) , prompting a long session on Google and a pleasant musical evening in the company of the Carter family, among others.  Even electronic rock'n'roll hearted Iggy has to admit it's actually far cooler than he had thought when he found his heroine PJ Harvey playing one!  One up to Budge, I think! ;)

Sorry,. that is what I meant not Harpsicord, but Autoharp, I used to have one at the Preschool I worked at in the 1980's it is a very basic instrument for young children,It does have a nice sound though and I am sure Pleos love it too!

I remember sitting on the edge of the stage in elementary school and playing "Home on the range" on my autoharp. It certainly made my singing much more tolerable, ;D when I was 7 years old. First performance in front of a large audience on an instrument. :D
This instrument can be played by pushing one of many bars across various strings to form a chord or strings can be plucked for certain individual tones. There are vocalists and groups, today, that still use the autoharp.

Whew,  :-[Thanks Grumpy. I think I can handle one more day, thanks for clearing that up, Actually I prefer to win because We have the winning entry, not because others didn't enter, so it is up to others to decide they want to participate. I remember there were not many entries in the Spring Festival, and we were surprised, so I am interested in seeing what happens this festival with the surge of new members.

Hmmmm, so now I just need some tomatoes....... :o  and may some musical instruments to join up with the band!

We're not real sticklers for details here.   Official time would be midnight Pacific time, but most likely I won't be up to cut off entries . . .  so you easily have until sometime Saturday whenever I get around to checking . . . and since weekends are usually pretty busy, that may no be until sometime late in the afternoon.  ;)   But if you wait until Monday, you will be too late!

Hey, Looks like I found someone to make sure the Band sounds as good as they look.

In a way a true sound Dino George already decided to start getting his groove on and dance the blues away.

It's so nice to have Dino George on the mixer. The band needs all the help they can get, tonight. Fernbacks are sounding great! ;) Nova and her backup singers have been a hit.  :)

Well, it is after midnight and the whole gang of Pleos, all six of them,  %))just came out of the Midnite movies, how many times can you watch the revenge of the Killer tomatoes anyway/ I guess untill the film breaks....anyhow, Nova's older brother got his costume done and wanted me to post the photos here, He is doing his best inpersonation of being a tomatoe, He is trying hard to blend in to the tomatoe vines and look like " one of the gang". ( yeah right, it is everyday that they see a big green tomatoe eating smaller red ones...Not likely . He does have a good heart and also a big appetitel, As soon as the last photo was shot he dug into one of the tomatoes and started asking for a napkin and salad dressing. He did do a good job of standing still to get these shots, not easy to do when you are talkiing about Pleos and esp when they are hungry. we will have to come back tommorow, I am so tired, I can't see sraight and my eyes are seeing double tomtaotes everywhere!

Wow - he looks good enough to eat!!  Fab costume RWM!  :D

George looks pretty groovy too, good to see him keeping the band under control! ;D

I've been really busy all week, so Iggy and Budge had to find their tomatos themselves.  Typical guy ( :P), Iggy refused to use a basket or trolley and 'wore' as many as he could carry:

Budge managed to roll the biggest one he could find:

So I'm afraid we didn't really manage to get all that many tomatos in all:

Though they were really pleased with their Big Tomato!  :D:

It was a late night last night in the tomatoe patch, so the musical trio of Pleo Trio and Friends, got a late start getting to fairgrounds today. After a quick lunch of Tomatoe juice, tomatoe fritters and some spinach for extra get up and go, they got all set up to join the other muscians at Weedovia. This year was the first time for Nova and family, so they did not have much time for practice, They also lost or misplaced a couple of instruments so with a quick tally they came up with the bells and tamborine on a ring, Nova loves Celebrities and has connections,  ;) At the last minute she was able to secure a special guest, Elvis Teddy Bear, direct from a Teddy Bear Convention somewhere in Vegas. He came still dressed in his Gold lame jumpsuit, and as well as singing with the Pleo Trio, he can play his accoustic Guitar!
So with Tomatoe brother fresh from the Weedovia Tomatoe patch and still adorned in his finest, and Nova dressed to the nines, only un-named number one Twin Brother is going Native and natural as most Pleos are, ( he hasn't been spoiled by Nova's ways ,......yet.. :o) Along with Elvis Teddy Bear there is one more special though smaller and unknown guest, Gund Baby Giggles bug, he is allways the life of the party in the garden and sings a nice tune as well as fluttering his wings in tune and follows every song with cute little giggles, Everyone is set for an afternoon and evening of tunes and fun! :D

Oh, the rest of the family is at home waiting for tonight's dance and other festivities!

Well a busy schedule prevented a stop-off for some tomatoes and a sleepy crew was unable to construct any fun costumes but it seems an energetic little Theo rounded up some instruments to see if he could still join up with one of the bands.

After trying out some thumbdrums, he decided he preferred the tin flute although managing the different notes will still take a little work. So if anyone still has a space for a wind instrument, Theo would like to try out.
