Title: Making New Pleo Skin.
Post by: tinman on March 20, 2009, 07:10:56 AM
Hi,
Well I'm new here and just got my Pleo yesterday. It happens that his name is Bob too.
I bought some oilbased clay and some Silicone casting resin a few weeks ago to make a fake hand.
But looks like I have the perfect project for it now.
I have a silicone resin what's called Dragon skin from www.smooth-on.com So fittingly I'm changing Bob(Pleo) into Drakor the dragon.
I think his frame will be perfect for a baby dragon.
I take it that there is no place to plug extra servos for the wings, so that will have to be controlled by sound I suppose.
A high pitched tone with the wing position embedded into the sound. That should work.
All the sensors should still work.
And a few skits with Dragon sounds will work nicely. No fire though. lol.

Once I have the clay done I'll post pictures.
Or if anyone has some good Baby Dragon pics for reference.

Cheers
Tinman

Welcome Tinman and Drakor Bob, wow that certainly sounds an interesting project, I don't think anyone has tried that before, certainly not on these forums. Keep us posted on how you are going :)

How do you plan to mount the wings?  They'll need to be secured to the back . . .

Hi Guys,
    Thanks for the warm welcome.
I need to take an inner mould first, So the skin may have to come off or I will just copy it from clay.
I'll have to change the eyes too. I have the clear polyurethane for that too.
I found these cool plastics, rubbers and silicones than can prety much copy or make anything.

So to answer mweeds question. It will be mounted onto his back. I need to see if there are any types of mounting areas already there.

and fancyfont, the dragon skin is a super elastic silicon used for special effects, you will find it will be very much the same what they have used on Pleo.

That's why I'm familiar with it. I'm a major MythBusters fan. ;)
