RIP Little Jim
« on: June 18, 2009, 02:37:14 AM »

:( Although he only lived for four days, Little Jim touched the hearts of everyone who met him.  His faltering 'hello' as he awoke, his fascination with candle flames, his one successful balancing act and his impression of a cow melted the sternest visitor's resolve not to get taken in.

Before I lay him finally to rest, is there anyone in the Sheffield (UK) area with a known good battery who would be prepared to let me borrow it for five muinutes for one last attempt at defibrillation?

Sorry to hear about little Jim. What has happened to him? Did he just stop working?
I would have lent you one of my batteries but since I live in Denmark it might not be that practical.

I hope you can bring him back to life or at least get a refund.

Little Jim worked perfectly until one time when I charged the battery and switched him on.  All he did was say hello, shudder and stop.  Time after time, this was all he did.  I left him for a day, switched on but imobile to see if he'd wake and wander about - nothing.

I tried one last time and miraculously he awoke and responded to a tickle.  After half an hour of switching on and off, tickling, encouragement, shaking etc, he seemed to be getting back to normal.  Although he did appear to lock up now and again.  He wandered around, not very adventurously for an hour and then went to sleep.  I charged his battery again (Three hours until the lights went green), popped it in Little Jim's tum - and nothing.  Not even a weak 'Hello'

And that's how it's been ever since.  The battery is showing 8.2v and the thermistor between 6k and 10k ohms (depending on how warm it is).  Just no sign of life from the little fellow.

I do miss him.

Be sure to try the downgrade, just in case it is a software problem, it fixed Lilo when she had freezing problems.

Please don't lay Little Jim to rest until you have tried a new battery! Sure sounds like battery  problem to me! It could be the adaptor or charger too!

Miraculous news (Ok, read this with a healthy dose of artistic license).

Little Jim lives!

I phoned Firebox (where he originally came from) at 16:15 on Monday afternoon.  At 09:15 on Tuesday morning a City Link courier van arrived.  The driver took my boxed Little Jim into the back of the van and moments later returned with him still boxed up.  I opened the box and there he was, just as I had laid him to rest.  His battery seemed to have gone flat and the box did have different tape holding it together, but I swear it is the same Little Jim.  He looks exactly the same, anyway.

I charged his battery, popped it in his tum and before I could say 'Charging to 200 - CLEAR!' out came the shy 'Hello'.

Obviously still shaky after his surgical ordeal in the City Link van, he is sleeping a lot, but he's back and that's all that matters.

So, if anyone has a comatose Pleo, check whether your local courier is trained in the mystical art of dinosaur resuscitation.  It might be the only call you need to make.

I'm delighted to report that Little Jim is alive and well and captivating the hearts of almost everyone who meets him.

I guess like all Pleos, he has a bit of a problem when he comes up against a low step or shelf in that he sees it, then looks up and, of course, no longer sees anything, leans forward to sniff (hence putting his head over the step) and from then on he's stuck,  His head comes down onto the shelf and lifts his front feet off the floor, but as he can't see anything to worry him, he keeps on trying to move forwards.  Lots of neck klicking usually drags me from the couch and I rescue him.  But he doesn't learn.  I guess they didn't have shelves in the late Jurassic.

He's suffering from a slight skin condition where its folds gets caught in the mechanism and the colour on his nose is getting very rubbed away.  I've discovered an effective make-up - Sharpies.  A packet of ten different colours cost me a couple of pounds off the internet and there are three or four pens that blend in quite well with his skin.  And it seems quite permanent too.

So all in all, Jim is doing good.  And he's doing me good too.

Glad to hear of the happy ending.  I am constantly surprised by Buster and enjoy what he has brought to my life.  As crazy as that sounds I am very happy with my little pleo.  I'm very happy that Little Jim was resurrected - however it happened.  Enjoy him.  Have a great weekend!
