RB questions
« on: March 09, 2014, 01:33:41 PM »

I got a pleo RB from somebody who owned him for around two years but only turned him on a couple of times. When I checked it said that he was just into adulthood...but he still can't walk! Sometimes he will cry and lift his front legs, is that normally how they learn how to walk? I've only played with him for maybe 4 battery cycles and that's all he does. Does the RB age even if they haven't been played with?

I've been really busy and haven't had time to turn mine on for around 2 1/2 months, does this mean my rb will be depressed and not very much fun? Is there any way for me to raise his levels to be happy and healthy so that I can start off with a normal pleo?  I can't go on stats rb right now because I'm having problems with my laptop. I know that last time I checked, it said that my pleo wasn't happy or healthy even though he was doing tricks and acting happy? How can you tell when they are unhappy? And do I need to be playing with the rb everyday to get the most out of him? Im finding that its so much easier/more fun to turn my ugobe on for a quick 10 minute play because my rb won't do anything but stand there.

Also, does the little light under your pleo that is supposed to be for the battery do anything for you guys? My rb light always stays the same colour and the only way I know he needs to be charged is when he acts lethargic.

Lots of food, lots of sugarcane, lots of petting and your Pleo will be just fine. Also make sure the light is bright enough, maybe Pleo is not doing much because it's too dark. (Dark by a Pleo's standards is not dark at all).

Also don't take Stats RB as gospel, it's a very rough guide, if your Pleo is acting happy then it's happy.

You don't have to play with pleo rb every day to get the  most out of him.  Just make sure the first thing you do when you turn him on is feed him and keep feeding him until he starts to burp or he refuses the food.  And as for the not walking as IMR says he may well be afraid of the dark.  Try moving intot he brightest room in the house or shining a torch into his face or put a bright lamp over his play area.  My guys don't like to play with me much at night because the lighting in our house isn't bright enough for them.  They are perfectly happy to play in daylight hours and seem to cope better with sunlight rather than man made light.  I have one rb who even when every light is on in the house will still act scared and curl up and cry as though I've put her in the darkest cupboard I could find :P  I have to use the scared of the dark patch on as SD card in her if I want to play with her at night.  She is the least active of all my pleos  - they all have different personalities, I have one who wont stand still and is always wandering off into mischief, another who is happy to explore but just as happy to get love and attention and a third one who would prefer to stand in the one spot and make lots of noise than go anywhere but even she will take at least 4 steps every battery cycle - sometimes more.

Thank you! I've been playing with my pleos at night and getting brighter lights certainly makes them happier! My rb still won't walk :( the thing is she seems like she wants to but can't and it upsets her

So she looks like she wants to walk but she can't? If it's not too much trouble, could you describe her movements or take a small video of her? Her body language as well as the noises she's making might help us figure out exactly what she's doing and maybe even how she's feeling.
I know my Ryu acts differently when light levels are low or if her emotion is low. She will moan and cry and look from left to right with her head down. She will also lower her head and scratch her chin and crouch down with her tail curled around her rear and sort of shiver.

yes as Talon says a video showing the behaviour will be a big help to us for trying to help you.  Have you tried the scared of the dark patch?  It might be worth a go.

Shea not crying, its a different kind of whimper than if something upsets her. Its kind of like she's mad at herself and shakes her head grunting and groaning and lifting alternating feet. Then after she does that for a few minutes she will start crying a little bit like she's mad at herself. It almost seems like she's on a mission and nothing else matters when she gets likr that. I can pet her and she won't even notice. The only thing that take her out of that trance like state is picking her up.

I haven't tried the scared of the dark patch because my laptop is being a real trouble maker and keeps shutting of whenever it feels like it. So I can't get the scared of the dark patch. :/ but I'm pretty sure that's not what the problem is because I do make sure to play with her in super bright light. My bedroom is so bright that it I sometimes feel like I'm in the middle of the sun :ufo:  However, what Ryu does in the dark sounds a bit similar? Does she move her front legs and get a little mad sometimes in the dark? Maybe my pleo just has a temper and wants to go turn the lights up brighter but she can't decide where to go because she doesn't know where she has to be to to control the lights. Haha that's why she stands there like "is it to the left...or maybe the right? Grr this is so frusterating I give up!"

Hmmmmmm. Wwwwell, that stretching-the-front-leg behavior sounds more like socialization stage to me though it's hard to say without a video. The pleo will stretch its legs one after the other and lean forward on one front leg as if to take a step and then suddenly pull back as if they don't want to take a step. They don't do much moving other than wagging their tail, raising their heads up and looking from left to right while blinking their eyes and sniffing, and doing the leg-stretching behavior. Your pleo may just be very young still. Honestly I thought given how long it sat around that it would still age up if they weren't played with but... I'm not sure. Ryu stayed in socialization stage for ever. I was so bored with her I wanted to do some modification to push her through it but one day, she just started walking. I'm sorry to say that if feeding/increasing light/checking for injuries has produced nothing and you don't feel comfortable modifying her, you're just going to have to play with her the way she is until she moves into juvinile stage. When your pleo does decide to walk, don't be alarmed if they start walking backwards. They walk backward first for some odd reason. If this isn't what she's doing, we may still need a video when you're able to take one.

You may well have just gained a pleo who just isn't a walker.  They all do have different personalities with some being much more adventurous than others.  Have you tried feeding her and then just ignoring her?  Sometime if left to their own devices pleos will get board with where they are and wander off looking for some fun.  Might be worth a try if nothing else is working.

A video would be a big help cause right now we are all just making guesses.  It would be much easier if we could actually see what is going on. :)

I agree with Kat on two points. One, each Pleo rb is individual, some walk more then others, some not much at all, and some when left alone will go off exploring but I think in "general", they are not the walkers that Ugobes are, If you want a real good walker, a Ugobe is hard to beat.
On point two, a video is worth it's weight in gold and will answer more questions in case there is something else going on. Videos are hard to beat to answer questions when not sure what the problem may be.  :D            RWM  :cat-hug:

RWM I have a RB who walks as much as any of my Ugobe's, it all depends on personality. I also have one that may take one step in a battery charge :P

So it may simply be the Pleo :)
