NAO robot learns things.
« on: May 01, 2009, 08:12:08 PM »

First boxes.. then pn to Sarah Conner  ;)

This amazing French bot is replacing Aibo in the Robocup and as an educational and research platform for robotics. 8)  I'm saving my pennies right now  ;D

Very impressive, but wow the battery life is far less than even Pleo's, only fifteen minutes if it is walking, 45 at best :o
*shudders* Far too expensive for the average person as well at $12,600. That is more than the cost of a new small car :o I can't say I could bring myself to spend that much on one even if I could afford it.

There is some more info here for anyone interested: http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2008/11/humanoid-robot/

And we thought pleos are expensive?? ??? ;D This robot needs to be a little larger. Then he just might be able to take out the garbage! ;)

Ah now that I would buy ;) When you think about from that perspective though this little girl (?) is only a step away from that dream, make them a few feet taller and viola the future of house work has changed forever :)

Nao will not be that price when released to public.......

Aldebaran robotics say.....

Nao is already for sale, in its Academics Edition version, which is dedicated to laboratories and universities for research and educational purposes. We offer the Nao Academics Edition for 10 000 €, as it is a professional tool.

After a random period, we will be able to produce Nao in bulk, and we plan to offer it at 3000 €.

4000 € is a purely speculative price for the launch price. It could be merely 4500 € or even 3500 € !

We already know that we won't be able to deliver the first General public version of Nao under 3000€...But we still do not know how much more expensive it will be.

Thats still in excess of $5000 ($7000 Australian) compared to Aibo at $1000 AU, Pleo at $450 AU, Robosapian at $200 AU, its all very well for someone with a good income and who is interested in robots as more than just a pleasant hobby but your average Joe Blow isn't going to want to spend that much. I hope the company does well but they have quite a small niche I think. Perhaps in the future they will bring out a less capable but more affordable version for home use...

But it's not the original NAO that is seen in those YouTube clips, it's a custom software bot that is used by AI research lab in Slovenia known as Xpero. Notice the colored pieces of paper on his head? Those are to tell an external camera about NAO's and the boxes whereabouts. NAO has wifi and that's probably how the data is fed back to the bot. It's not even certain that most of the computations takes place in the bot's own CPU. The data might be pre computated and then fed to the bot.

The A.I lab has very little information on the project's home page except what was shown in the YouTube clips but here's their home page anyway: http://www.ailab.si/xpero/

I watched the vid and noticed something unusual.  During the time frames of 2:08-2:15 as Lilo was walking backward, the white box to Lilo's right moved towards her after she passed it.  Lilo did not touch it at all.  I learned two things from the video. 1) Lilo has the power of telekinesis.  And 2) Lilo is smarter than I am. 8)

Lilo is definitely at the head of the class!  :) She'll be able to teach Stitch all about the things she is learning to do. ;)

Well telekinesis or maybe just a bit of string tied to it :P I had to have it out a little because Lilo kept knocking it with her back foot :P

I looked for a string or something but was unable to see one at the resolution available.  I still like bot telekinesis! ;D

It's amazing you saw this 49er! I had to play the video over a few times to see what box moved.
IMR, you should have let 49er keep thinking it was telekinesis!  ;D

I wonder how long it would take to teach Pleo to self levitate?  Then he could go over obstacles instead of through them.  'Though I'd have to remember to keep the windows shut.  I wouldn't want him to scare the Western Gulls! ;D

I would like to see what the NAO robot can really do. It still would be better for it to be a couple of feet taller  :)

They should put a bit of rubber on the soles of the feet, it would help it grip and be quieter :)

Not only the battery life baffles me (although it's not that surprising actually) but he also wobbles quite a bit when he stops walking.
Or is that just how the custom software works in this showcase demonstration?
And although agile, it's a pity that they needed an extra custom system to make him do all this.
Indeed it would be fun to see what he can really do with just his own hardware and no external CPU and/or camera system.
I also wonder what it can do once it gets released for the public.
Hopefully, it will be as advanced and autonomous (if not more) as the Aibo ERS-7M3!
