I think Bob and Sally are both right, yes it did have some ancient language on it, but it was from some ancient civilization's Pizza parlor combination Mud Bath Springs Health Spa, and Bob knows a good sized Pleo Pizza tray when he sees it. Personaly, I am with Bob,  ;D Bring on the Pizza, extra cheese please!

.... Assuming we do all know the story of 'Stone Soup?'

Just making sure, considering that my own father didn't know it for whatever reason.  :-\

Ah, let me try to remember the whole thing, and not get my versions mixed up.

The most popular version (I think) is about a soldier who comes to a town and sees that the people are eating poorly.  So he gets everyone together with a huge pot, and tells everyone to gather up at least one thing that they had from back home, and put it in the pot to make soup.  So everyone manages to scrape up something, whether it be lamb, beet, carrot, steak, pepper, or something entirely different.  However, one person has none but a stone, and puts that into the pot.  Hence the name of the story, 'Stone Soup.'

How weird - you mentioned different versions, but I would have expected the meaning to be the same.  The version I'd heard is the soldier is conning the villagers by starting with the stone and telling each of them he's missing just one ingredient.  Also heard the same story as 'Nail Soup'.  I love the way folk tales like that change in different places! :)

Actually, Crewella, there are very many different 'Soup' stories!  :D

I've heard of Woodchip Soup, Axe Soup, Hatchet Soup, Stick Soup.... And I think that's it, as for what I've heard!

For those older folks, or those who are into really poorly done dino animations, in the 1st season (1974) of the original SId and Marty Kroft's "Land of the Lost" TV show, they did an episode based on the "stone soup" concept, where a drought had made food very scare (odd that the drought killed off the "food" plants but left the rest of the jungle green....) and in order to bribe the cavemem characters, the modern day folks took a rock and started cooking it in a pot of water, and convinced the cavemen  to add a few scrawny veggies, etc. to make it into a rich stew.  At the end, the modern day folks are able to get their way by bartering this special soup making stone to the cavemen.... ah... P.T. Barnum was right....
