Edward Lear was a self educated Englishman of the mid 1800's who liked to coin new words. I considered changing sarpint to serpent but it would have changed the intent and wonderment of the limerick.

The problem with eating real fire is that it chars the tongue and you have a long lasting smoky flavoring added to anything you eat. And you need to be careful while eating it to not singe or burn off your eyebrows or the hair on your head. Burnt hair smells terrible. You also need to remember that the source of the fire shouldn't be petroleum based or the taste of petrochemicals will overwhelm all other flavors.
