Pino by Radica
« on: December 21, 2010, 05:09:37 AM »

Hi All

Just aquired two of these cute robots.  The first one arrived yesterday and was supposed to be working, :o :o :o :o >:( >:( could not be bothered to send him back, another is on its way to me after the Xmas rush.

Anyway decided to do some inner dectective work on/inside  the Pino that I have.  Two of the sensor switches had snapped.  With a little bit of my old precision camera repair technology, I have managed to get him working. :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)  I had to make two new plastic micro switch levers, they are about 5mm long by about 2mm wide, a 0.83mm dia hole at one end and at the same end it had to be cam shaped, to operate the micro switch contacs inside.  The micro switch is about 4mmx8mmx2mm normally open contacts at one end and the lever at the other.  It has taken 5 hours to do the two. 8) 8) 8)

Ready for bed now. :-\ :-\ :-\

Good job, binbags!  It's lovely when you get one fixed!  :D

So, which Pino did you end up with - friendly, shy or naughty Pino?  ;)

Hi All

Yes Crewella, the feeling is nice when you end up with something is no longer regarded as useless and back to almost (re-birth).  Which I think it is, because I have done a complete power down and reset. %) %)  He has got a green visor (LED) at the moment.  So on Xmas morning, I give my wife “Zora” and I give myself “Pino”. :-* :-* :-* :-* :-X  I paid a bit over the odds for him, :-X :-X :-X :-X but I did not mind as I have been looking for one for about 4 years now.  Then a bus load comes along!!!! %) %) %)  This second one I got for “an egg and an apple” if you have ever heard of that, so dinky fingers here is hoping to be able to fix this one as well. ;) ;) ;)

I will keep you all posted.  I may even do some photos of this second repair job. :)

You sounds just like me, binbags (though admittedly with a lot more technical know-how!  :P), I spend hours getting lost down fascinating informational cul-de-sacs when I should be researching stuff for work!  I enjoy the detective work in figuring out how things work, or what's wrong, too.  All the 'mystery' objects at work, the music boxes, automata, Victorian gadgets etc. end up on my desk!  ;D

Hi Crewella

Yes we have a lot in common.  This is how I started out in life, in my working career as a professional camera technician.  You cannot fix something, unless you how it works.  So, methodical disassembly is recommended.  I do have photographic memory, this helps no end. %) %)

The internet was just another tool, when it came along.  Now, it’s my hammer, my screwdriver, my tweezers, my magnifying glass and all my workshop manuals rolled into one.  When it goes down, I get withdrawal symptoms. >:(

I used to work, in the centre of Manchester in the mid to late 60s.  That led me into scientific instrument collecting, microscopes and weather instruments etc.  I love precision things such as watch movements; I have a cockpit clock from a MIG21, a Russian Jet Fighter of the 1970’s I have only got a small amount of my collection on display in the house, as there is not enough room.  Need to win the Lotto. :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X :-X

Yep - I got the collecting habit bad too!  :P :-[

Do post some pics of Pino up and running (when he's officially yours, of course, after you've unwrapped him and looked surprised)!   ;) :P
