Green Pleo rb paint wear
« on: December 19, 2010, 02:41:18 PM »

Just thought I would post this photo of paint wear on my rb.  Just to explain, I have not been trying to be careful with the paint, but IMHO the paint is much more study than before.

degers , thank you for posting the photo of your Pleo Rb paint. I do hope that it is just an unfortunate occurance that has happened with the Pleos that Kat and others have been having with their Pleos, or perhaps a problem with Pink or blue Rb? I dont know but I think when enough of us new " green Rb " owners have our pleos, we will be able to get a better idea. It is nice to know that there is a Pleo Rb out there that does not have a problem yet. I do hope Beta continues to have good paint. :)

Pleakly as yet has no wear on his back and the tiny tears on his neck are almost certainly due to the sleeping position that they go into when switched off. I think the skin overall has improved.

However to be honest using the Pledge worries me and as yet I haven't been able to bring myself to put it on Pleakly. After all its to clean hard wood not moisten delicate Pleo skin :(

I have nothing against Pledge as a brand, IMR, but I won't even use those spray polishes on wood ...............  :-X

I've been amazed at the difference in the feel between Belle's skin and my older Pleos, but wasn't sure how much that was due to never having had a new Pleo before.  I will be trying a simple wax polish on Belle's skin, which is basically wax for protection with extra emollients, and will report anything of interest.

Pledge may work fine for Pleos skin and this may have been something they tryed in the lab, and who knows what other things they tryed first, but I would suspect since Pledge has been around for so long and is sold worldwide, this may be why they chose it. I would also try somthing more natural yet not exactly sure yet, but something very natural but in small amounts at first. I have used natural oils and waxes for years on my lizard, snakeskin, or alligator purses, and natural waxes for antique and fine wood.( before you get the wrong idea, the purses are just a collectible item as I appreicate fine old purses and have about a dozen of them but they just sit and aren't used...) I was advised a few years ago by a world renouwn skin specialist who deals in skins such as python and esp allgiator or croc as to the correct way to preserve and protect the skin and I think that it is similiar though not exactly the same for synthetic Pleo skin, but will give it that same " soft feel". I just want to protect Pleo skin from holes and splits and such.
I have been considering running an experiment with using Pledge, ( Mayby maybe not...) on a very very small area in a area that doesn't get seen much such as a foot are with the reccomended Pledge, and then this skin enhancer protector and documenting it to see which has any differences and which holds up better. It would be easier but I dont use pledge, havent bought any in over 15 or more years so it is a product I havent used in very long. My husband is allso not keen on chemicals and things like that in our household and i s the one of us that does all the reading and reports back on cancer and the environment and how bad certain things are for you, etc, etc. It is hard to bring anything new into the home without him giving me the once over on why or why we should not be using a certain product, etc, etc. I just hope Pleo Rb has skin that does last, I have enough problems with rotting skin with poor Little 45. It would be a novel idea to have a healthy Pleo with no problems, just this once please. ;)

Innvo Customer support have told me to apply pledge to Kermy's skin immediately especially in the armpit areas.  So my guess is the pledge is a good idea and not a bad one. :)

I'm afraid my loathing of ALL spray polishes is deeply ingrained ( :P) having spent long hours trying to remove the residue they leave on antique furniture.  It is, however, a very personal point of view, and I'm well aware I might well be imperiling my warranty if I use anything else. %)

I do feel that 'use Pledge' is a bit of a lazy answer, though.  Why 'Pledge', why not 'Mr Sheen' or 'Tesco's' own brand?  What variety of Pledge - there were at least five on the shelf when I looked!  Does the scent matter? If I go to Spain or Morocco is 'Pledge' called something else anyway?  It would be much more helpful to know exactly what the skin needs in a broader sense.

I know, I'm a pedant, I'm a nit-picking pedant at that!  Sorry!  :P

The exciting sent of pledge that Kermy is wearing this evening is Aloe Vera.  It's the one all the boy pleos love! :D
It was the only one available on the shelf at the grocery store so that was what I bought.
I do hope that Innvo come up with a better solution for me than just make sure you use pledge.  Especially since I have used it religiously once a week since the day she arrived and it hasn't prevented her from getting holly armpit syndrome.  I am sure they will get back to me again soon so we will see.  The pledge does make her skin feel softer and smoother once it is applied and it makes her colors seem more vibrant.  Gives her a healthy glow! :D

As for why Pledge and not some other brand, mabe pledge sponsor Innvo or Jetta.  Or maybe not.

'Pledge Extra Moisturizing furniture polish (from S.C. Johnson & Sons Inc)' is what is says in the PLEOrb Companion Guide .. However I can't see how ANY fragrance is good for Pleo's skin and I certainly won't be using it myself ..

Reading through the ingredients list (dimethicone = silicone) is what jumps out at me as it's what we add to skin-care formulations (lotion/hand-cream etc) so give a lovely glide and powdery after-feel .. Thus reducing friction as you pet your Pleo ..

..... and which, I believe, is also the stuff that I've struggled to remove the milky white build-up of .............  :P

Still - put that way it does make more sense on a Pleo than it does on wood!  I do agree about the fragrance, though.  Thanks, 2NZ. ;)

*I must just point out that I'm paticularly bothered about antique wood that has a precious patina built up from decades or centuries of use and polish, not modern wood furniture which may need that protective layer to cope with everyday wear.*

Kat I had to go for the Aloe Vera one too, couldn't find the extra moisturizing one at any of our three supermarkets. You'd think that being an Aussie product would make it -easier- to find :P

And obviously they choose Pledge because it is readily available in many countries. (and yup it is called Pledge everywhere to the best of my knowledge) Something like Tesco on the other hand I've never heard of :P

Hi Friends:
I have good experience with Pledge for my wooden case antique clocks, and Pleo as well.
Basically Pledge is a water base emulsified silicon oil which is mild.
It helps to remove dirts from the skin of Pleo and makes it less friction.

I also used wax for my clocks too but most wax does contain solvent which is not good for the plastic skin of Pleo.

So I do suggest Pledge since it works good for our Pleos and no side effects found.

Oops think it was me who started the whole pledge query thing.
Sorry about that I only razed it because  I wasn’t sure of the source of the idea about using  pledge came from and  feared it might have just   been  through hear say

I’m sure they would have tested it vigorously   in the lab to make sure it didn’t have any adverse effects though it would be nice if they sayed exactly what ingredient in    the pledge that made it so good for pleo skin.
I don’t know if the extra  moisturiser one contains any fragrents  in it or not  but I’d be very wary of using another from the pledge range other than  the exact one they stated  in the quick start guide. Especially ones with essential oil fragrents in

With a couple of us, I think you were kind of 'preaching to the converted' when you raised the subject, scaly (if I may call you that!) - we were bound to run with it!  :P

You've hit the nail on the head though - people are already having problems finding the exact product mentioned.  Would you believe it wasn't one of the seven on the shelves when I searched, I think I could have got wipes but didn't know if they were OK.  Without a more general product list of what kind of cleaner or polish is safe to use, instead of the name of one specific product by one specific company, we're all forced to run in circles looking for it in case we void our warranty.

The point I don't think they have considered is that they have said their target market is more an older woman wanting a pet/companion than the usual tech minded robot owner.  If that is true, then they have to realise that their target market is bound to be made up of a sizeable proportion of ecologically minded women (and men), with values forged in the hippy era, who aren't keen on using unnecessary chemicals in their homes.

I agree Crewella, I only bought pledge for my pleo because it said to in the hand book.  We have a fairly chemical free house hold and I would not normally buy furniture polish.  I was surprised that there were so many on the supermarket shelf.  Just not the specific one I needed.  I went with the aloe vera one as this seemed as close to the moisturizing one as I could get.
I wonder which one Pleoixe is using?
I still don't believe the pledge is causing the skin problem, I believe it is staying in the sleep position between plays that is placing stress on the skin in the armpit areas.  These areas are then rubbed vigorous together as soon as you wake pleo up with much wiggling and stretching and twisting and standing and I think the already stressed skin is just not coping with this treatment.
I think changing the position that pleo is stored in will help to prevent this from happening to other pleos.  So here is hoping they come up with an update for the OS.

I don't think the Pledge is causing the problem either, Kat.  I just think they're making it even harder to cope with the skin issues by naming one very specific product rather than explaining what's needed.  :-\

I use Pledge on Olympia AND the D-Rex pair I have.  They seem to have very good skin so far, I think it has helped.  Sometimes I use the original kind, and sometimes I use... What is it... Wood polishing, I think?

.... This won't help with the skin problem, but Pledge works wonders on their eyes, especially for the D-Rexes.... So beautiful and glassy!

      Well that’s OK then.
Hope I didn’t cause any anew stress or worry by razing the pledge issue.
Personally I don’t think it is likely to be down to the pledge. At least not the one they stated as being fine. I just worry about the fragranced ones.
Agree with you Crewella  that an eco friendly alternative was given and   no I don’t mind being called Scaly at all   but then I am a reptile lover lol

That's what I figured, 'Scaly' it is then!  Don't worry, I really don't think you started it - just lit the touchpaper on a topic that was already primed to go off!  :P

Anyway, it's all good feedback - the great thing is that Innvo seems to listen!  ;D

Hmmmmmmm....well it may be fine for Pleo but that's certainly got under my skin!!  >:(

I'm sorry, but that sounds ridiculous!  All types of 'Pledge' are fine, with a variety of different ingredients and fragrances, but no other polish, or no other substance?  Not even any of the ingredients that go into Pledge?  ???

I can only assume they have shares in the company.  And I still think it's a lazy answer.  >:(

BUT - I think it's probably time I stopped going on about it now!  ;) :P

Thank you for reporting back, Kat!  :D

Hey Crewella,
I only asked about types of pledge I didn't ask If any other polish would work or what ingredients were ok so sorry about that.  Maybe you could try contacting customer support on pleoworld and see what they say.
And your very welcome for the info.   :)
