A Pleo For Someone In Need
« on: December 11, 2010, 11:15:48 AM »

I've been surfing Ebay looking for a worn-out Pleo to repaint when I stumbled across this entry. Please read the item description. Is there any way us forum members can help via a donation system? I vaguely recall someplace on-line that allowed for public digital donations for fundraisers but I can't remember the name of the site that does it. Anyone know? Perhaps we could create a fund or something on our own so we could pool some money together to get a Pleo to this boy in need?

Hmmmmmmmm .................. I'm really sorry to be such a suspicious Grinch, but with the amount of money (cumulatively) that that buyer has spent on computer gaming stuff in the last month or so, they could have bought a second hand Pleo by now!  ???

EDIT:

I'm already feeling guilty for posting that - it's just that I used to spend a lot of time on the Ebay forums, and more often than not pleas like that did turn out to be scams.  Yes, of course it's possible that this person is genuine.  I'm just very wary and would want to know a lot more about them before getting involved.  :-[

Crewella is right, I hate to say it, but maybe if that person spent less money on games, gamer headphones and dress ups they could have bought a Pleo. I'm all for helping people but if you can afford to spend that kind of money on unnecessary items then I think I'd rather give my money to someone more truly needy.

I don't believe it at all. The story is too cliche and text book tragedy. If you believe what this eBayer is saying I would think buying a Pleo is the last thing they need. I'm sure it's a con job.

Even if this is genuine, there are lots of posts similiar to this and I allways doublecheck posts like the feedback which is posted for almost all ebayers, unless it is private where you cant read it. also if this Austiistic boy did lose his cat, I would think a better solution would be to get perhaps another cat or puppy. and at the same time rescue a life from an animal shelter. I can't just leap into any post like this without not knowing more. This person if genuine could also go to their local radio station or news channel and do a live interest story for help, or for a local chapter of Easter Seals, Salvation ARmy and there are so many more where in the local town itself they could get people to buy or donate for one without having to do it on Ebay.
I hate to sound like Grinch, but I have been taken in before with better stories though similiar to this. I am not saying it is not genuine, but also why do it this way and with the things they have purchased, they have better finances than some others out here. I would just need more information and don't think this is the way to go.

I'm with you guys  ;)
I'm sorry but it has all been said and I have to agree, after looking at the statistics of the purchased of that person they could do without a lot of the stuff and save to get a new pleo. ;)

I can see why you would want to help Watergazer.
At first glance it really does tug at the heartstrings a bit. I honestly can’t tell if It’s genuine or not but as the others have said, and I don’t think there mean for being suspicious, it should be treated with grate caution.

As Redwoodsmama pointed out there’s lots of other ways for someone to go about razing money in their own community if they really are genuine. Maybe I’m being too unfeeling vut making an appeal on EBay just   doesn’t feel right to me.

I agree with RWM, they should get a new cat or puppy from the shelter. Or they could always get donations from their family/friends

Actually, now that I think about it, if MY cat had been missing for three weeks I'd still be looking for the cat, not shopping!  >:(

I'd have the search and rescue on the case!!! I panic if my cats don't come home at 4pm when it's their dinner time. The one time my Lucky didn't come home before dark I was out on the streets looking for him :P (Turns out he was snoozing on the next door neighbors outdoor couch :P) But three weeks, well I wouldn't be quitting.

Exactly - mine are now all so ancient they rarely go more than ten feet from the door, but I've spent several evenings out with a torch, trying to whistle quietly, over the years!  :D

With nine cats we are allways on the lookout for a outdoor Romeo going missing. I could not even sleep if one of my furbabies is missing for a few hours, I start thinking the worst and cant concentrate on anything till they are found, If they havent found their cat by now, it is either in a new home, they haven't posted lost and found or checked at the shelter or called Animal controll to see if any cats fitting their cats' description has been picked up DOA or turned in as a stray, or they haven't done a proper search, thinking the cat will just come back on it's own, Many a time an animal gets in a situation where they ca'nt come home on their own, and need human help.
Kind of off topic, but animals allways raise a heart tug in me and I agree that there are lots of other things that could have taken place besides posting an plea on Ebay. I will watch and follow this on ebay to see what happens, If it is legit other things will happen, just seems too suspicious to me............ ???

Actually that’s a good point about the cat.  I’d be doing everything I knew to try and find my cat if she got lost.
Know its prob not the same but when one of my corn snakes went missing for 2 weeks I was beside myself for worry.  I could hardly sleep a wink. untill I recovered  him again.  I turned  the house upside down  looking for him  and when I couldn’t  I  had a  fear that he might have gotten outside and perished in the cold  weather.

I know exactly how you feel, it doesn't matter if it is a bird, reptile, cat, dog, rabbit or whatever, ( though I have never heard of a fish going missing) point is, if this Autisitic boy is so attached to this cat, and people with Autisim really do focus on one item for ever whatever it is . How could this mom not do everything possible to try and get that cat back , but from what I have read, it does not say she did anything but try to get this Pleo to " RELACE the cat." That does not make sense to me. If it was my child and that cat means that much, I would be out there doing everything possible and a NEW Pleo would not be the answer and if a Pleo was the answer, she would settle for any pleo, the boy is not going to care about cost or if it is new as long as it works, Sounds to me like she either wants a Pleo bad or wants to resell it and make some money using the story as a ploy or if she does have a boy with autisim, it is still not real enough to me, too many warning red flags.

the other question I have is that she says: She has two children, is a single mom and going to school and working and that they live in a ONE ROOM HOUSE AND CAN BARELY AFFORD TO RUN A SPACE HEATER IN THE WINTER.? How can they live in a one room house, a mom and two children including one who is a teenager, and three of them sleep there yet she also has room for a computer , and wants to buy a Pleo or have someone donate one to her? If those were the lving circumstances, they couldn'[t afford to feed that cat and the cat left to get a better home.. :( So many things sound fishy to me. How could she buy all those video games, NIntendo or whatever. I doubt if they were for the Autisitic boy. If I had two children and couldn't afford to run a space heater barely in the winter, I would have other prioirties besides video games. One room houses are not that common anymore with three people unless it is a couple with a baby, you live in the slums or the ghetto or the Appalachian mts.
I would love to contact this woman, but I have noticed the bids are still at 11 cents or 13  c ents, so not many people are believing this story now are they?

I knew RWM (cat lover that she is) would agree with me on the lost cat!  :D

Scaledandtailed, I once had to pull up the floorboards to locate a lost (and just rescued) D'Alberts python.  Lost snakes are even more of a nightmare to find than lost cats!  :o

I'm guessing that somebody will report that listing sooner or later and it will be removed.

I hadn't even checked what she had been purchasing...just felt bad reading the post and took it for face value. I just checked back on it and she did manage to get a Pleo after all! I feel bad about the cat also...I recently got my dog micro-chipped. I couldn't live not knowing where she was. If it came down to it, I told my husband, if she ever needed expensive surgery or something I'd sooner sell my car and pay the vet bills than put my dog down.

hI Watergazer, nothing wrong with caring about someone, I completly understand. I noticed she said she sold her old computer and bought a used one so maybe she is legit and if so, I am glad she was able to get one for her son, and I think selling her old computer was a better way to do it anyway, I did notice there were no more bids after 13 cents, which means people either didn't believe her or had other plans for their money or suggestions for her, as she says lots of people sent kind messages,
I did add her to my Seller list, just curious as to whether she sells that Pleo, though it sounds like she did get it for her son, It is just the one room house with two kids and herself and no heat that threw me off and raised red flags. I am glad it has a happy ending and we can get back to happy posts again.
By the way, glad you are back on the forums, Have you seen the Makeovers I gave Nova and Little 45, as I saw on another post you started, talking and asking about Painting Pleos, etc, theirs is pretty extensive and at one point a few months ago, NOva was Choclate brown, but mly husband kept kidding me saying she looked like she had vacationed in the Bahamas so I removed the paint and did a makeover when he was not around.
Best wishes, human caretaker to Nova and family of Pleos, RedwoodsMama :)

Agree with RWM, Watergazer - there's nothing wrong with caring about people.  It's just such a shame that some people do try to take advantage sometimes and make so many of us suspicious!  :(
